Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 1378: The Flying Sword's Might

Xu Chengyuan followed behind Chen Changsheng. True to his word, he acted as a proper attendant, proving far better behaved than Chen Changsheng had anticipated.

Traveling with Chen Changsheng inevitably came with its hardships. Chen Changsheng was a cultivator who sometimes went without food or sleep, but Xu Chengyuan was different—he still needed to eat. As a result, whenever they reached a city, he stocked up on dry rations to stave off hunger so they wouldn't lose time on the road.

Beyond that, he took it upon himself to gather information, asking around for the names of the local mountains, rivers, and lakes. This saved Chen Changsheng a great deal of trouble.

As far as attendants went, Xu Chengyuan was doing an excellent job.

Chen Changsheng took note of it all.

Then, one night, instead of pushing forward as usual, he built a campfire in the woods.

"What do you want?" Chen Changsheng asked.

Xu Chengyuan paused, looking at him in evident confusion.

"Sword Immortal, I don't want anything."

Three days later, Chen Changsheng asked him the exact same question.

By this point, Xu Chengyuan seemed to understand what he meant.

But after a moment of thought, he shook his head again. "I don't want anything."

This time, Chen Changsheng spoke plainly. "Then This Chen will ask you: who sent you to find me?"

Xu Chengyuan hesitated, but this time he answered, "It was another Sword Immortal. He wanted your sword techniques and moves, and told me to steal them."

Chen Changsheng nodded, then asked, "Then why do you say you want nothing?"

"I truly don't want anything."

Xu Chengyuan explained, "What I told you at the beginning was no lie. The tragedy at Mount Ainiu really did happen to me. Because of that, I am unwilling to do anything that would betray you, Sword Immortal. So, even if you ask me again, my answer remains the same. I want nothing."

"Then how will you deal with the Sword Immortal who gave you those orders?" Chen Changsheng asked.

Xu Chengyuan gave a helpless smile. "I'll let nature take its course. At worst, I'll just find an excuse and brush him off."

"How could it be that easy?"

Chen Changsheng shook his head, looking straight at him. "What benefits did he offer to make you do this?"

"He promised to teach me Immortal Arts."

"So that's how it is..."

Chen Changsheng understood why the man had followed him.

Xu Chengyuan knelt. "Please punish me, Sword Immortal."

Chen Changsheng looked at the kneeling man. Reaching out, he gave Xu Chengyuan a knock on the head.

Xu Chengyuan froze.

Then he heard Chen Changsheng say, "Let's go."

Xu Chengyuan was confused.

"This Chen alone cannot ask for directions this often," Chen Changsheng added.

Catching on, Xu Chengyuan smiled and hurried to catch up.

...

Long He caught wind of the rumors about that Sword Immortal from the Southwest Region.

"Word has it that this newly emerged Sword Immortal is quite handsome. He wields a sword called Listening to Rain and wears a green robe. He looks like a schoolteacher, but once he makes a move, his Sword Qi is endless!"

Hearing this, Long He froze.

A Sword Immortal in a green robe?

A very specific person instantly sprang to mind.

"No way..."

Long He found it hard to believe, and on second thought, it seemed downright impossible. How much Dao Cultivation did that man even possess? How could he turn around and become a Sword Immortal?

Just as he was lost in thought, the speaker continued.

"They also say that this Sword Immortal is fond of mountains, rivers, and lakes. Every time he passes through an area, he draws up Geographical Maps."

Long He, who had just taken a bite, instantly sprayed his food across the table.

Now there was no mistaking it!

To think the man's abilities were this immense! Striking out as a Sword Immortal right from the start!

"Xiao Er, the bill, the bill..."

Long He scrambled to pay his tab. As he walked out of the tavern, he was still in a daze.

Only now did he realize what it meant to have eyes but fail to recognize Mount Tai.

Back then, why had he panicked and fled in such a hurry?

Regret gnawed at him. If he had just received a pointer or two, he wouldn't need to be running around like this.

"Sigh..."

Long He let out a heavy sigh, secretly kicking himself.

Xu Chengyuan originally thought he would follow this Mister Sword Immortal to every corner of the world, capturing everything under heaven into these Geographical Maps.

But one day.

The Mister left him with several drawings.

"Mister, what are these drawings of?"

"This Chen's sword."

"Listening to Rain?"

"Yes."

Chen Changsheng passed the three sketches of the sword over. "A gift for you."

Xu Chengyuan chuckled at this, not overthinking it. "Thank you, Mister."

He didn't pay the gift much mind.

Yet, when afternoon arrived, the Mister mentioned he was tired and found a spot to rest.

Xu Chengyuan found this strange. He had followed him all this way, but had never once heard the Mister complain of fatigue.

Why was today so different?

The sun sank in the west, casting its fading glow.

Twilight's crimson clouds blanketed half the sky. Looking at them, Xu Chengyuan felt his mind settle into a deep tranquility. He figured this might be exactly why they walked this path.

He also seemed to understand why the Mister loved the mountains, rivers, and lakes. Who wouldn't want to travel and witness these grand spectacles of the Mortal World?

"Mister..."

Xu Chengyuan turned around, only to freeze.

He stood up and scanned the area, but the Mister had vanished without a trace.

He searched high and low but still couldn't find him; there wasn't even a footprint left behind.

Xu Chengyuan's heart sank. After a long silence, he let out a heavy sigh.

He didn't know where to go.

Thinking back on their experiences over the past dozens of days, he couldn't help but pick up his booklet.

After a long deliberation, he took up his brush and ink and began sketching the path they had traveled.

He thought he could keep walking on like this.

Until that original Sword Immortal tracked him down.

"The things I told you to steal—did you get them?"

Xu Chengyuan stiffened, then shook his head. "That Sword Immortal kept his skills hidden, and he never carried any sword manuals or methods on his person."

"What a piece of trash."

To Xu Chengyuan's shock, in the blink of an eye, a streak of sword light slashed straight toward his throat.

He didn't understand why the man was being so utterly unreasonable.

And against a sword this fast, he had no way to defend himself.

He thought he was dead for certain.

But suddenly, one of the drawings tucked inside his robes fluttered out.

The sword on the paper materialized into reality. Sword Qi abruptly surged, completely neutralizing the incoming slash.

"Hm?"

The Sword Immortal faltered. A moment later, a Flying Sword hovered directly in front of Xu Chengyuan.

Xu Chengyuan was equally dumbfounded, unable to believe his eyes.

Instantly, the Flying Sword shot toward the Sword Immortal. As the sword moved, it was as if someone were wielding it.

Staring at the scene, Xu Chengyuan stood in a daze for a long time.

"These are... sword moves?"

There was no mistake!

The Sword Immortal was being beaten back, step by step, by a single Flying Sword.

Xu Chengyuan's eyes remained glued to the Flying Sword, committing every technique and motion to memory.

Eventually, the Flying Sword seemed to grow bored of the fight.

"What?"

The Sword Immortal froze. Raising his eyes, he saw a streak of sword light flash past. In an instant, his own longsword hit the dirt. Clutching his throat, he collapsed in indignation.

He was merely a Sword Immortal of the Mortal World. Compared to the Cultivation World, there was simply no comparison.
