In the years that followed, Chen Changsheng rarely left this wine tavern.
Every time he returned, three sacks of Spirit Rice would be waiting by the tavern door. They were always sent by Zhao Yuqing, who had placed a special Restrictive Seal on them so that no one else could touch them.
The seal would only lift upon Chen Changsheng's return.
Because of this, whenever he came back, there was always a bowl of porridge to drink and a bowl of rice to eat.
The Spirit Rice Zhao Yuqing grew was only getting better.
This was Chen Changsheng's most immediate impression. Perhaps because they had bickered over it, Zhao Yuqing was dead set on growing a sack of Spirit Rice that would completely win him over.
Chen Changsheng was naturally happy to see it.
He Qing always made a point to return once every three years.
She came partly out of deep respect and gratitude toward the two seniors, but also for the porridge and wine.
Zhao Yuqing always timed his visits as well. It seemed that in these dull years, bickering with Chen Changsheng had become the only thing he looked forward to. Sometimes, getting into a brawl with him brought immense satisfaction.
"The porridge is ready."
Chen Changsheng announced this, bringing it over to the table.
Zhao Yuqing and He Qing were already seated and waiting.
He Qing, ever the sensible one, ladled out a bowl for everyone before digging in herself.
"This porridge still tastes the best..."
He Qing let out a sigh, feeling particularly satisfied. "You seniors have no idea. The two years I was out traveling, I really didn't come across anything good to eat. I ate poorly and slept poorly."
Chen Changsheng said, "There are always regional differences. You're bound to feel unaccustomed to some things."
Zhao Yuqing said, "It's because my Spirit Rice is grown so well."
"It's just average."
Chen Changsheng always dismissed it like this.
Zhao Yuqing said, "I'll argue with you after I finish my porridge. I don't have the time right now."
He Qing smiled at the sight and said, "You two seniors have been arguing about this Spirit Rice for years. How are you still going at it?"
"Too much free time," Zhao Yuqing said.
Hearing this, Chen Changsheng nodded in agreement.
He Qing felt a bit helpless; sometimes it really was hard to understand these two.
The time Chen Changsheng spent back was never long, usually only lasting for a single Huaixu. They always gathered together, talking and laughing, with no need to think about anything and without a single worry.
Watching the two seniors banter, He Qing's mood improved considerably, feeling as though she had caught some of their lightheartedness.
This was also a rare moment of peace for her in these past few years.
"Speaking of which, where have you traveled over the past few years?"
"Too many places to count..."
He Qing said, "I headed east first. I reached the edge of the Desolate Sea and visited a place called Zhundi..."
She recounted her experiences over the years to the two seniors.
Thinking about it, she recalled another matter and said, "By the way, Senior Chen, do you happen to have an older sister?"
Chen Changsheng froze for a moment upon hearing this. "What sister?"
Zhao Yuqing looked up.
"You have a sister?"
He Qing said, "Yeah, when I left earlier, someone claimed to be your older sister, Senior Chen. Half-sister from a different mother or something. I didn't believe it, but we ended up walking together for a stretch. We parted ways later when she had other business to attend to."
"What was that person's name?" Chen Changsheng asked.
"It was..."
"Chen Lingyun, right." He Qing said, "She said she came from Rosy Cloud Mountain."
Chen Changsheng gave a helpless smile. "So it was her..."
He Qing realized what this meant and said, "So she was lying to me back then?"
"You could say that."
Chen Changsheng said, "This Chen figured she would double back."
Zhao Yuqing seemed to guess who it was and asked, "Your romantic debt?"
"What romantic debt? Don't speak nonsense."
"Is it not?"
He Qing's eyes lit up at this, and she asked with curiosity, "So, that sister... is a pursuer of yours, Senior Chen?"
Zhao Yuqing said, "That's right, a pretty fierce girl. When she was driven off by your Senior Chen, I was just passing by and even caught a curse from her."
"Ah?"
He Qing paused at this, unable to help feeling a bout of lingering fear.
Just how much nerve would it take to curse at Zhao Yuqing!
Zhao Yuqing said, "If it weren't out of respect for your Senior Chen, the grass on her grave would be several zhang tall by now."
Chen Changsheng said, "Stop your nonsense and drink your porridge."
Zhao Yuqing shrugged, unbothered by the matter. He said, "I actually thought that girl was pretty good. The bolder they are, the better they suit you."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Look at yourself. You're quiet as a stone. Having a chatterbox around would be great."
Chen Changsheng shot him a glance, wanting to curse.
Zhao Yuqing said, "You see, this is just how your Senior Chen is. He doesn't curse out loud; he just likes to curse in his heart. A thousand or eight hundred times wouldn't be enough."
He Qing giggled, completely amused by Zhao Yuqing.
Chen Changsheng paid it no mind, merely chuckling as he said, "Wait until This Chen finishes this porridge. I'll summon a heaven and earth edict to strike you dead."
"You think I'm scared of you?"
Zhao Yuqing didn't take the threat seriously at all.
Their bickering was endless.
He Qing also took it as a joke, but to her surprise, when she was later getting ready to leave...
The sky suddenly changed.
She looked up and saw dense, dark clouds gathering in the sky.
The continuous rumble of muffled thunder drifted down.
He Qing's lips parted slightly, as if she recognized what this was.
The year before last, while traveling through this Cultivation World, she had witnessed a ghost cultivator trigger a Heavenly Tribulation, looking exactly like what she saw now.
"A Heavenly Tribulation?"
He Qing caught herself and murmured, "It can't be... Senior Chen wouldn't actually summon a Heavenly Tribulation to strike him down, would he?"
Just as she was thinking this, she suddenly heard a shout from the distance.
"Chen! Are you fucking serious?!"
He Qing knew that voice all too well.
Who else could it be but Senior Zhao?
She pursed her lips, only able to silently pray for Senior Zhao.
Later, when she finally went down the mountain, she could no longer see Zhao Yuqing anywhere.
"Senior Chen, what about Senior Zhao..."
"Him?"
Chen Changsheng said, "Right now, he should be running all over the world with a Heavenly Tribulation chasing him."
He Qing opened her mouth and said, "Senior Chen, isn't this... a bit inappropriate? What if there's an accident?"
"It won't strike him dead."
Chen Changsheng said, "He can trade blows with the Heavenly Dao itself. Why would he be afraid of a little Heavenly Tribulation?"
"Haha, haha..."
He Qing let out a dry laugh; she only felt that she really didn't understand the world of almighty figures.
How did the Heavenly Dao become just another part of their arguments?
It was practically overturning the heavenly order.
Chen Changsheng said, "By the way, This Chen will be leaving in a couple of days. I've also prepared quite a bit of wine. You can take it all with you when you go."
"Alright," He Qing agreed, then asked, "Speaking of which, Senior Chen, where exactly are you heading?"
"Me..."
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment and said, "I'm not heading anywhere. I'm just dying, that's all."
"Huh?"
He Qing blinked, not quite understanding.
"The literal meaning."
Chen Changsheng offered no further explanation, simply turning around to go brew some wine.
