Chen Changsheng was gone, vanishing just as suddenly as before.
He Qing could do nothing about it. She took some wine, pulled the door to the Wine Tavern shut, and locked it.
With a soft sigh, she too prepared to leave this place once again.
She still had many places to go.
She had barely made it back in time this year, and she wasn't sure they would be able to reunite in another three years.
But perhaps it was exactly because that thought had crossed her mind as she walked out the door.
Three years later, things did indeed go wrong.
She became trapped in a certain place, unable to find a way out.
"Doesn't this mean I won't make it back in time..."
Endless frustration gnawed at He Qing. Right now, she was trapped inside a Formation. Rumor had it that this place was the ruins of an Immortal Sect; stumbling upon it by sheer luck, she had wandered inside and wound up trapped by the Formations for three whole months now.
If she didn't get out soon, she would miss the two seniors' return.
But as things stood, she remained completely helpless.
She didn't know the first thing about Formations!
And the Formations of these ancient Immortal Sects were incredibly complex!
...
That year, Chen Changsheng waited in vain for He Qing's return.
He wondered if something had happened to her, but seeing no strange reactions from the wine pot, he set his mind at ease, figuring she was merely delayed by some minor setback.
Zhao Yuqing showed up again, bringing aged rice from the previous year.
The moment he saw Chen Changsheng, he started cursing him out.
"Chen, are you even human? Do you have any idea how long that Heavenly Tribulation chased me?!"
"For more than a full year!!"
Chen Changsheng fiddled with the wine jars and replied, "Who asked you to run your mouth so much? Did you really think This Chen had no way of dealing with you?"
Zhao Yuqing sat down. "You've got balls," he said.
Despite the bickering, Chen Changsheng still brought him some wine.
Once settled, Zhao Yuqing asked, "That girl He Qing didn't come back?"
"She didn't. Who knows what happened to her."
"You're not worried?"
"I left a Gourd with her. It's inscribed with Formations, so if anything happened, I'd know about it on my end."
Zhao Yuqing gave a slight nod. "Now that's more like it."
"She's your disciple. You didn't know?"
"Why would I pay attention to that kind of thing?"
Zhao Yuqing said, "Life and death depend entirely on one's own capabilities. I've taught her so much—if she drops dead the moment she goes outside, she shouldn't bother with Immortal Cultivation. She'd be better off just farming."
But after a moment's thought, he added, "Actually, I'd probably even disdain her farming."
Chen Changsheng said, "Her comprehension might be a bit lacking, but she isn't nearly that useless."
"True enough."
Zhao Yuqing took a sip of wine and leaned back in his chair. "I'm only staying a little while. I'll be leaving soon."
"What's the rush?" Chen Changsheng asked.
"To bring you a gift."
"Hmm?"
Right as he said that, Zhao Yuqing suddenly paused, as if sensing something.
Chen Changsheng also paused. Glancing outside, he saw a thick layer of dark clouds sweeping toward them.
His expression shifted slightly, instantly realizing what Zhao Yuqing was scheming.
"Rumble!!"
The Heavenly Tribulation struck down, but mere moments before it landed, Zhao Yuqing cast an Escape Art and fled.
And so, that bolt of Heavenly Tribulation slammed right into the Wine Tavern.
It took Chen Changsheng quite a bit of effort to barely block the Heavenly Tribulation, but the roof of the Wine Tavern was blasted to smithereens.
"Good. Very good..."
Chen Changsheng stared at the shattered roof. As for Zhao Yuqing, there was no telling where he had already run off to.
"Then This Chen will add a little extra spice to it for you."
Chen Changsheng raised his hand, channeling a surge of Yin-Yang Qi, and pointed upward.
"Go!"
The Yin-Yang Qi shot toward the dark clouds, rapidly gathering within them.
Bolstered by this Yin-Yang Qi, the thundercloud would chase its target even faster.
Having done that, Chen Changsheng looked around the ruined room. Helpless, he had no choice but to rebuild it.
By late autumn, the Wine Tavern was finally restored.
But it was also time for him to leave. He Qing hadn't returned this year, but after some thought, Chen Changsheng still left behind several jars of Peach Blossom Brew. He'd been busy fixing the Wine Tavern all year and hadn't brewed much; he only hoped it would be enough for the girl.
...
It wasn't until early autumn that He Qing finally broke free from the Formations and hurriedly rushed back.
To her surprise, the Wine Tavern before her looked as good as new. The roof had fresh tiles, and several of the support beams and pillars had been replaced as well.
The door to the Wine Tavern was locked shut. Seeing this, He Qing immediately understood.
She was too late.
"It's all because of those Formations!"
He Qing stomped her foot in frustration, but after a moment's thought, she still went inside the Wine Tavern.
Upon seeing the jars of Peach Blossom Brew left on the table, her mood brightened considerably.
Unlike previous years, however, there was also a sack of Spirit Rice resting on the table.
Next to it lay a small note.
He Qing stepped forward, picked up the note, and read it.
[Zhao Yuqing got the Wine Tavern blasted down, so I had no choice but to rebuild it. Because of that, I didn't brew much wine this year. I don't know if it's enough for you, but if it isn't, just ration it out. When you return next time, This Chen will brew a little more. Also, Zhao Yuqing left a sack of Spirit Rice. I remember you like eating this rice, so cook it for yourself later. Don't stand on ceremony. Be safe on your travels.]
He Qing snapped back to reality, a slight smile tugging at her lips. Sometimes, she really felt that Senior Chen was just like an old father—warm and kind.
With this, her earlier frustration vanished, leaving her quite happy.
Even though she hadn't made it back in time, Senior Chen had still remembered her.
"How nice..."
Smiling, He Qing picked up a jar from the table and began to drink the Peach Blossom Brew. It had been so long since she last tasted it, and she'd been craving it terribly.
Leaving this time, she took the wine along with the sack of rice. She returned to Qingyu Mountain and stayed for three days to spend time with her mother before hurrying off once more.
Returning in a rush, leaving in a rush.
She hurried to the ferry crossing and boarded a Flying Vessel. This time, she was heading for the Mortal World.
Cultivators were always endlessly curious about the Mortal World.
Everyone said it was a land steeped in mortal affairs, a place one shouldn't enter lightly.
But He Qing stubbornly refused to believe it!
She was determined to see for herself if it was really as they claimed.
Halfway through the journey, however, the cultivator manning the Flying Vessel told her, "If you're heading to the Mortal World, you'll need to disembark here."
"Get off here?"
He Qing said, "We're in the middle of the boundless Desolate Sea. Where am I supposed to get off?"
"This is as close as we get," the cultivator replied. "There are cultivators permanently guarding the borders of the Mortal World. Forcing our way in would inevitably trigger a fierce battle, so you'll have to make the rest of the journey yourself."
He Qing was taken aback. "Why didn't anyone tell me this...?"
"Who even goes to the Mortal World anyway?"
Hearing that, He Qing finally understood.
Left with no other choice, she disembarked right there.
Estimating the remaining distance, she simply took off on her flying sword. Fortunately, she had learned some sword arts, so she wasn't completely helpless.
From afar, she could finally make out the Mortal World.
"So that's... the Mortal World?"
But right at that moment, a massive wave suddenly surged upward.
He Qing's expression stiffened, and she hastily dodged out of the way.
A figure was standing atop the churning sea, booming out, "Outsider cultivators! You are forbidden from setting foot in the Mortal World!"
Clad in black robes and with a voice like a great tolling bell, the man didn't look like someone to be trifled with.
