He sat within Liuyun Temple.
Yet the shifting tides of the heavens unfolded fully before his eyes.
Chen Changsheng slept and woke, woke and slept.
When he woke the first time, he discovered shifts in the Mortal World's qi destiny. After asking around, he learned that the Imperial Jade Seal had been lost during a rebellion, its whereabouts unknown.
To his mind, the Imperial Seal had likely been taken by someone with an agenda.
Upon waking the second time, Chen Changsheng took a trip to the Demon Domain. He visited Yuanshan, the territory of an old friend. The Fox Clan was rising once more, carving out a new foothold in those mountains—though they remained a shadow of their former glory.
The qi destiny of the Demon Race in the Mortal World had also shifted.
The master of the Demon Market had gathered the qi destiny of every demon market across the world to establish a nation. Consolidating this power into the Demon Seal, he unified the qi destiny of the Mortal World's Demon Race.
That same year, the Demon Race within the Cultivation World also underwent changes. Facing the current great tribulation, countless monsters gathered in one place, collectively calling themselves the Demon Race. In all its history, this faction had never known such harmony.
A seizure of qi destiny!
On that day, the Underworld's Gate of the Yellow Springs swung wide open. Countless nether soldiers and ghost generals poured into the world, launching consecutive uprisings against the Demon Race and the Literary Dao.
Cultivators of the Literary Dao quickly realized that these nether soldiers and ghost generals felt incredibly familiar—they were exactly like the demonic cultivators they had encountered in the past!
And that Demon Sovereign had evolved from his past role leading the demonic path into a Youdu Yama, commanding his ghost troops to invade the world.
In just two years, the Demon Race fell. All of their qi destiny was seized and ultimately merged into a single Demon Seal, consolidating their fate.
By now, the Human Dao, the demon path, the immortal path, and the Buddhist Dao had all fallen.
Only the Literary Dao remained standing in this world.
Chen Changsheng expressed no reaction upon learning of these events. It seemed entirely expected.
The shifts within the demonic path were undoubtedly the result of Manyue maneuvering behind the scenes. Otherwise, Wang He would never have bowed his head so easily.
The defeat of the Demon Race was also logical. After all, the demons of this world had never been particularly united, and after being suppressed by the Mysterious Gate for countless years, little of their strength remained.
Chen Changsheng drifted back to sleep.
Time flowed on, and another three years passed.
When he woke this time, new changes had occurred.
A year ago, at the ruins of Tianji Mountain, Kong Ru had comprehended the Great Dao and achieved the realm of Sage. Single-handedly, he suppressed the horde of demonic cultivators threatening the Literary Dao.
From that moment on, a drawn-out war began between the Literary Dao and the Underworld.
Even Kong Ru likely lacked confidence in the outcome of this conflict. The foundation of the Literary Dao was simply too shallow.
But the real surprise was that Taotie had not shown its face once in all these years.
Later, after cultivators investigated widely and searched everywhere, an answer suddenly emerged.
‘The Desolate Sea!’
This was a place many had long forgotten.
Most cultivators didn't dare set foot in the Desolate Sea. Not only was it volatile and unpredictable, but it was also prowled by Great Demons. Over the years, countless cultivators had lost their lives in its waters, and even now, crossing it required the aid of a Flying Vessel.
Because of this, Chen Changsheng made a special trip to the Tongtian River, only to find that Mo Yuan was no longer there. Beicang had suffered heavy losses under Taotie's influence, forcing Mo Yuan to return and take control of the situation.
As for the current Dragon Palace, it was managed by Dragon Woman Ying En and remained relatively stable.
Chen Changsheng had planned to go back to sleep, but an uninvited guest arrived at the temple today.
It was Zhao Yuqing's inner demon.
"I've come to ask you for two things," the inner demon said.
Chen Changsheng replied, "This Chen is empty-handed. I have nothing to give you."
The inner demon shook his head. "You do. You've had them for a long time. If I'm not mistaken, they should be a few totems right on your body."
Chen Changsheng frowned upon hearing this.
The inner demon continued, "The Demon Race's qi destiny is noticeably depleted. Someone hid a portion of it long ago."
Chen Changsheng asked, "Who told you this?"
The inner demon considered it for a moment before telling the truth.
"I took a trip to the Underworld."
Understanding dawned on Chen Changsheng. "What did the Demon Sovereign say?"
The inner demon said, "He told me to ask you directly, and that you would hand them over."
Chen Changsheng said, "Why should This Chen give them to you?"
The inner demon recalled the Demon Sovereign's words. After a moment of thought, he stood up. "Then I'll just come back next time."
He could yell and scream at anyone else, but this man was his sole exception. The inner demon was genuinely wary of him, knowing perfectly well that this man named Chen Changsheng was different from the rest of the mortal masses. He was the one person who had truly stepped outside the six realms.
It was best not to provoke him if it could be avoided.
Chen Changsheng didn't ask him to stay. A few days later, the inner demon returned.
"Has Mister Chen thought it over?"
Once again, the inner demon was refused.
He maintained his smiling facade until another person arrived in Qiuyue Fang.
Wang He.
He certainly hadn't come for his own sake; the person behind him had sent him.
Since the Demon Race's qi destiny currently rested in Manyue's hands, she had naturally noticed the missing portion as well.
Seeing Wang He made the inner demon panic slightly.
This remaining scrap of the Demon Race's qi destiny was immensely important to him.
He couldn't let the Underworld hoard it all!
Upon entering the temple, Wang He bowed first. "Greetings, Mister Chen."
Chen Changsheng noticed a drastic change in Wang He's attire. He was dressed with the sharp, proper elegance of a court official, perfectly matching the rumors. He really had become that Youdu Yama.
Wang He said, "The Demon Sovereign asked me to pass a message to you, Mister."
"What did he say?" Chen Changsheng asked.
Wang He replied, "The Demon Sovereign said he figured you must be quite bored in the Mortal World, so he purposely found some entertainment for you. He says you can choose for yourself who gets the qi destiny. If you're not in a good mood, you don't have to give it to anyone."
Chen Changsheng shook his head with a smile. "Then This Chen will have to thank him."
He glanced at Wang He and asked, "Are you just here to pass a message?"
Wang He shook his head. "The Lord of the Underworld ordered me here. He hopes you will hand the qi destiny over to the Underworld."
At this, Chen Changsheng noted, "Someone else got here before you."
Wang He paused, confused. "Who?"
Chen Changsheng pointed toward the temple entrance. A man was currently standing outside, having seemingly listened in for a while.
Wang He frowned slightly; he had no impression of this person whatsoever.
Chen Changsheng said, "I have ties with both of your sides. Giving it to either of you isn't ideal. This Chen is in a bit of a bind."
The inner demon stepped forward with a smile. "You must be joking, Mister Chen. The mere Underworld is nothing but a lower realm. How could it compare to the true living beings of this world? In my opinion, it would be better if this qi destiny fell into my hands."
Wang He didn't argue against the insult. He simply said, "Say what you will. I'm just here to do a job. Whether I succeed or not is another matter entirely."
