Immortal Travel of Longevity
Chapter 1487: Fallen Leaves Return to Their RootsWang He had always been a bit more capricious. Manyue likely knew he wasn't the sort to quietly submit, yet she had let him come anyway.
Manyue knew perfectly well that Chen Changsheng did not need respect or humility; he needed someone interesting, regardless of their attitude.
It all made sense.
The inner demon, however, found Wang He's attitude somewhat strange. After a moment's thought, he felt assured again—with such terrible manners, there was no way this man was getting that share of qi destiny.
That was for the best.
Chen Changsheng glanced at the two before him. After a brief moment of thought, he muttered, "What kind of fun could there be..."
He let out a breath and said, "There is only one share of qi destiny here, and it comes from the Yuanshan Fox Clan."
The inner demon stared blankly for a moment before asking, "What about the Tongtian River Aquatic Tribe...?"
"It was returned to their descendants."
Wang He frowned slightly and turned to look at the inner demon.
A smile curled the inner demon's lips. "How hard could that be? I'll take my leave!"
With that, his figure vanished from the spot.
As for Wang He, he remained completely still. After a moment's thought, he walked over, pulled up a chair, and sat down.
"You aren't going?" Chen Changsheng asked.
Wang He shook his head. "I'm not going. There's no point. I might as well just sit here and head back to report when the time comes."
Chen Changsheng smiled. "Then sit with This Chen for a while."
Wang He glanced at him. "You smell like an old man."
"Is it that obvious?"
"Yes."
Wang He nodded. "It stinks even worse than someone who died of old age."
Chen Changsheng, however, hadn't noticed a thing.
"You might as well just call it the stench of the dead."
"There really isn't much difference."
Wang He let out a breath and said, "In this current dispute, I'm already a prisoner. I can't compare to you people at the top, who can decide my fate with a flip of your hand. But it doesn't matter anymore. The Mysterious Gate is destroyed, and I am satisfied."
"Didn't you originally want the demonic path to reign supreme?"
"How could it be that easy?"
Wang He offered a helpless smile. "I'm not that great demon from the history books. Compared to him, I lack the ability. I fall far short."
It was a truth he had only come to understand later.
He possessed a unique talent for cultivation, but when it came to expansion and management, he was utterly mediocre.
Most of the time, the entire Demon Gate had been managed by Jian Shenghua. But later, Jian Shenghua met an untimely end, devoured by that Taotie.
"What about now? Do you have any other plans?"
"I do."
"Still revenge."
"Jian Shenghua died," Wang He said. "He died in the jaws of that Taotie. The only reason I still walk this world is the hope that one day, I can behead that Taotie and feast on its flesh and blood. Only then will my hatred be satisfied."
Chen Changsheng shook his head. "What if This Chen told you he didn't die?"
Wang He froze at those words.
"The Taotie does eat people, but its methods vary. Everything the Taotie swallows transforms into a realm of its own. Jian Shenghua is a ghost cultivator and lacks a physical body. After being swallowed, he merely went to another realm. In reality, he is still perfectly alive."
Wang He shot to his feet. "Is that true?"
"This Chen wouldn't stoop to lying to you," Chen Changsheng said.
Wang He pursed his lips. After a brief hesitation, he cupped his hands in a formal bow.
Then he grabbed his sword and turned to leave.
"Where are you going?" Chen Changsheng asked.
"To pay that Taotie a visit."
Chen Changsheng shook his head slightly, but Wang He had already strode out of the Daoist temple and vanished from sight.
This man was quite easy to dismiss after all.
...
The inner demon immediately made a trip to the Northern Demon Domain.
There, he saw the Yuanshan Fox Clan. However, the current state of the clan gave him an immediate headache.
The abilities of these fox demons were simply far too poor.
Let alone ruling over this region, merely surviving in peace had become a massive problem for them.
"This is troublesome..."
The inner demon muttered to himself. But it wasn't impossible. If he taught them from scratch, out of so many fox demons, there was bound to be at least one capable of stabilizing the situation.
And he would have to play the role of guide.
What Chen Changsheng wanted was definitely not just temporary stability. The inner demon had asked around and learned that the previous Fox Lord had shared a deep relationship with Chen Changsheng. That meant what Chen Changsheng truly wanted was another Fox Lord—someone capable of leading the fox clan to rise once more.
"It just means spending a bit more time."
"I can afford to wait."
The inner demon exhaled, then transformed into a cultivator in Daoist robes.
He began preaching and teaching within the fox clan, passing on knowledge and cultivation methods, slowly guiding this fallen tribe back onto the right path.
...
Chen Qi passed those Huaixu years in a cycle of dying and waking time and time again.
The chirp of cicadas, the summer wind, and the sweltering Huaixu heat.
The temple was always peaceful. Tao'er would grind ink by his side, but she was always lost in thought.
She was likely thinking of Tong Zhihuan. Longing was always hard to sever.
She pursed her lips and asked, "Mister, once the Underworld is established, will people have a next life?"
Chen Changsheng paused for a moment before answering, "Perhaps they will."
But this was hard to say for sure. The mysteries of Reincarnation were profound and abstruse. It seemed not everyone would get a next life, and even Chen Changsheng could not fully comprehend the rules governing it.
"Do you want to leave the mountain?" Chen Changsheng asked.
Tao'er snapped out of her daze. She thought for a moment and said, "Yes."
Chen Changsheng nodded slightly. "Go, then. But This Chen hopes you will remain clear-headed at all times. Do not become overly obsessed with this; you must maintain a peaceful state of mind."
"I know, Mister."
Early the next morning, Tao'er prepared breakfast, bade farewell to Mister, and descended the mountain.
Clutching the Peace Talisman tightly in her hand, she gazed down the distant road.
She firmly believed that since there would be a next life, the day would definitely come when they would meet again.
Fate would ultimately not disappoint someone as devoted as her.
After Tao'er left, the temple grew much quieter.
Chenghuang was a person of few words. He guarded the Daoist temple for Mister. To him, the passage of time did not matter. He liked it here, so he wanted to stay and guard this place—waiting for Mister, standing watch over the passing years...
Chen Changsheng often urged him to go out and walk around more, but he was unwilling.
"Mister," Chenghuang said, "I've been to many places over the years, and I've seen them all. Doesn't the Mortal World often say that fallen leaves return to their roots? This place is my root. That is why I've returned, and I won't be leaving again."
