Things in the world flowed like a river, seemingly destined for wherever it went; the only difference lay in the splashes and ripples stirred along the way.
A girl in the courtyard held up a spear. It seemed she had been holding it there for ages, long enough for her arms to begin trembling slightly.
But the moment she moved, a small stone would fly towards her.
Lan Ting, sitting nearby, raised her hand and flicked a pebble. It landed precisely on Ruyi’s hand.
“Hiss…”
She parted her lips, asking, “Master, d-do I still have to hold it…?”
Lan Ting gave a soft assent.
“Mhm.”
Feeling resigned, Ruyi had no choice but to continue holding it.
The spear was unusually heavy for her.
Suddenly, the road ahead seemed endless and particularly rugged.
A tinge of regret crept in, but it was too late for that now.
Ruyi held the spear all day, only truly resting when afternoon arrived.
Lan Ting then taught Ruyi some mental cultivation formulas and methods to regulate her Qi and Blood. This was to strengthen Ruyi’s meridians, easing the soreness she’d feel the next day.
Only after all this did Lan Ting leave the small courtyard.
Ruyi finally exhaled in relief. “This martial training is truly exhausting…”
Lihua, perched on the wall, saw Ruyi’s utterly drained expression and remarked, “If you quit practicing, Good Human Chen will definitely laugh at you when he comes back.”
Hearing this, Ruyi replied, “I never said I was quitting. I’m just taking a break.”
Lihua nodded, asking no more.
She simply found Ruyi’s practicing ways amusing. If Ruyi stopped, she’d have to find other entertainment, which was quite annoying.
“By the way,” Ruyi muttered, “when can I finally learn that mental cultivation?”
Lihua asked, “Didn’t the Orchid Monster say you’re not ready yet? You have to wait.”
Ruyi clicked her tongue. “I’m just curious, that’s all. Hmm… trying a little bit shouldn’t hurt, right?”
Lihua paused before saying, “I’m not saving you if something goes wrong.”
“Geez, is it really that scary?”
Ruyi thought it over and decided against it. It wouldn’t be good if anything happened.
In the days that followed, she continued practicing her spear techniques under Lan Ting’s guidance.
Time flew by, autumn giving way to winter.
A light snow dusted Qingshan City.
In the courtyard, the girl swung her spear. She no longer wobbled clumsily as she had at the start. Instead, a sharp edge now gleamed from the weapon.
The spear was beginning to show its edge.
Watching her, Lan Ting said, “Enough.”
Ruyi glanced over. “But I haven’t finished practicing today.”
Lan Ting stated, “From today onwards, you don’t need to practice the spear in the afternoon.”
“No practice in the afternoon? Then what am I doing?”
“The mental cultivation text given to you by Mr. Chen.”
Ruyi froze in place. “R-really? I can learn it?”
She was overjoyed. After six monotonous months of rigorous training, finally, something new!
In Lan Ting’s view, Ruyi’s natural aptitude wasn’t good, and she had missed the best age to start martial arts. Teaching her this late was a precaution against the profound mental cultivation damaging her fragile meridians. Half a year of foundational strengthening removed that concern.
Ruyi grasped the mental cultivation surprisingly fast.
She had already done much preparatory work, studied medical books to understand human meridians, and through watching her master, had naturally learned much about Blood Qi. For her now, it was just a matter of course.
Another half-month passed.
One morning, Ruyi awoke and practiced with her spear as usual. Yet this day, the spear in her hand felt different, possessing a unique momentum it never had before. Lifting it felt noticeably smoother.
She had entered the Second Realm of martial arts.
This advancement was remarkably smooth, a direct benefit of the previous six months’ training.
“Master, I reached the Second Realm!”
Lan Ting observed her and gave a slight nod. “Good. But you are still far, far behind.”
Ruyi asked, “When will I not be considered far behind?”
Lan Ting thought for a moment. “There’s a saying in the Great Xiao Jianghu: Below the Sixth Realm, one isn’t considered a true martial artist. You are far from even entering the ranks, and it’s not solely about realm level.”
“Sixth Realm…”
Ruyi’s lips parted in a sigh. “That will be, gosh knows when!”
It had taken her over six months just to reach the Second Realm. And the journey from here would only get harder and slower.
Lan Ting shook her head. “You ought to feel satisfied.”
After all, most who trained martial arts in the world took two or three years just to step into the Second Realm.
As late spring tipped towards summer, Ruyi noticed her Qi and Blood progress had stagnated, but she couldn’t find the cause.
So one afternoon, she sought Lan Ting’s counsel.
Lan Ting didn’t seem surprised. She simply advised, “About your cultivation technique, you might ask the elderly gentleman across from your courtyard.”
“Ah?”
Ruyi was taken aback.
Lan Ting explained, “His cultivation technique bears some resemblance to yours. Perhaps he can offer guidance.”
Confused but compliant, Ruyi went to his door and knocked.
Ouyang Feng, currently painting himself as an octogenarian, opened the door. Seeing her, he was momentarily startled. “Little lass, is there something you need?”
Ruyi snapped back to attention and quickly clasped her hands respectfully. “Elder, I seek your guidance on a matter.”
Ouyang Feng glanced at her. “Come in and have a seat.”
Ruyi sat down, feeling a little tense.
Ouyang Feng inquired, “What is it you wish to ask?”
Ruyi explained, “The Master who teaches me says your cultivation technique is somewhat similar to what I’m studying. She encouraged me to come seek your advice.”
“Similar?”
Ouyang Feng paused, frowning slightly. “Lift your hand.”
Ruyi promptly raised her hand.
Ouyang Feng pressed two fingers against her wrist, sensing it. Within her pulsed a surprisingly robust flow of Qi and Blood. This Qi-Bloood essence did bear some resemblance to the Nine Yin Manual, yet it was not entirely the same.
He couldn’t help but glance at her more carefully. “Did Mr. Chen teach you this?”
Ruyi started. “Elder… you know Uncle Chen?”
Ouyang Feng chuckled but didn’t explain. He seemed to understand the situation now.
Ouyang Feng asked, “Recently, have you felt that your Qi and Blood’s circulation is blocked and progress halted?”
Ruyi’s eyes lit up. “Yes!”
Ouyang Feng nodded. “It’s actually rather simple. Being a woman, your natural Yin Energy is stronger. When your Qi is insufficient to support your internal technique, stagnation occurs. I’ll write a prescription for you. Take it to the apothecary, brew it, and drink it; that should resolve it.”
He added, “Furthermore, feel free to come ask me any questions you have in the future. This old man will answer knowing everything.”
Ruyi hesitated. “Would that… be appropriate?”
Ouyang Feng just waved it off. “This is a debt I owe your Uncle Chen.”
Ruyi didn’t press further, sensing this was the elder’s private matter.
After receiving the prescription and thanking him, Ruyi left.
Ouyang Feng watched her departing figure and sighed quietly. “A rather promising seed…”
“Pity… she started far too late.”
