«Chapter 604: Practicing the Spear, Learning the Art

It was nearing the end of the second year since Ruyi began learning martial arts and spear skills.
As the year was nearing its end, things seemed busier.
Seeing Ruyi train so hard, Yun Xiang reduced her duties at the Embroidery Workshop. Ruyi still got paid, which gave her plenty of free time to practice.
“Sister Yun.”
Ruyi visited the Yun household.
As usual, Hongjin had the sharp tongue, but the moment Lihua pretended to pounce, she fled.
After the meal, Ruyi chatted with Yun Xiang.
Xiang asked, “How’s your mother’s health?”
Ruyi replied, “I saw her just the other day. She’s doing wonderfully and seems truly happy. Doesn’t even need to cook for herself anymore.”
“That’s good to hear.”
“And you, Ruyi?”
“Ah, me?”
Ruyi paused. “What about me?”
Xiang asked, “Didn’t you say you wanted to travel? To see more of the world?”
“Oh… that.”
Ruyi thought for a bit and managed a weak smile. “Heh, I’ll think about it later…”
“Hesitant to leave?”
“Mhm.”
Ruyi sighed. “It’s strange. I used to talk all the time about wanting to go out, but now that I should… I just feel so reluctant. I can’t quite make the decision.”
Xiang said, “You’ll go eventually, even if you keep dragging it out.”
Ruyi clicked her tongue. “I think I understand lately. Master visits me much less often. She scolds me less, too. I guess once I reach the Fourth Realm, she’ll want me to leave.”
“But didn’t Master Lan Ting always say that anything below the Sixth Realm barely counts as competent?”
“Not sure. Thinking about it, maybe I need to spar with more people to truly improve.”
“That makes sense.”
Xiang herself felt reluctant to see Ruyi go, after living alongside her for so long.
Ruyi looked at Lihua. “Want to come with me?”
Lihua glanced at her and shook her head.
“Why not?”
“Need food.”
Lihua said, “Would starve. Three days without meals a week.”
“Is it really that bad?” Ruyi blinked.
Lihua nodded seriously. “During these two years of your training, you’ve often forgotten my meals. I ate at Miss Yun’s place.”
“Cough, cough…”
Ruyi cleared her throat a little awkwardly. That was her oversight.
She added, “I’ll be so lonely by myself! Don’t you feel sorry for me?”
“No, I don’t.”
“…”
Ruyi stared at the cat. “Well, I don’t care! You’re coming whether you like it or not!”
Lihua blinked. “Ruyi is forcing good people to do bad things. That’s not something a good person does.”
Ruyi was taken aback. “Who taught you that?”
“Heard some people outside say it,” answered Lihua.
“Stop learning nonsense like that! Forget it!”
“Why?”
“No why! You just can’t pick up bad words. It’s not a good saying.”
“Oh…”
In the end, Ruyi persuaded Lihua to follow her on her journey with a promise of one fish per day.
Even though the cat agreed, Ruyi herself still hadn’t fully made up her mind.
…
Three days later, Lan Ting returned to the small courtyard.
Seeing Ruyi, her eyebrows furrowed. “What are you waiting for? Why haven’t you advanced to the Fourth Realm?”
Ruyi was startled. Her hands holding the spear felt clumsy.
Lan Ting sighed. “I don’t understand you. Wasn’t practicing martial arts your way to see the world? Why are you so indecisive now?”
“No, Master, I…”
Lan Ting looked directly at her. “The choice is yours. But a martial artist must be decisive. Many women in the Jianghu suffer precisely because they waver. I don’t want that for you.”
With that, she left the courtyard.
Left alone, Ruyi sighed helplessly. She sat in the yard all day, doing nothing, lost in thought.
Well into the night, the truth remained the same.
Sooner or later, she’d have to go.
“Ugh…”
She understood. Her master was pushing her to leave.
Just as she’d always said—Ruyi wouldn’t grasp the gap between herself and others without stepping beyond these familiar walls.
Qingshan City simply wasn’t big enough.
The next day, Ruyi rose very early. She thoroughly cleaned both courtyards and packed her bags.
First, she visited her mother.
Compared to before, Wang Sanniang had aged considerably. Her face wore a kinder, gentler look these days, showing the passage of time. Yet, her bright spirit made it clear she’d been living well these past years.
“Mother, I’m just going out to see a bit of the world. I won’t stay away long.”
Sanniang patted her hand gently. “Now, you go see everything out there! I never had your talents, dear—though I admit I’m a touch envious! Ha ha! Best bring back a fine husband for your old mother, eh?”
Ruyi’s face reddened instantly. “Mother! What are you saying?”
“Talking sense! You’re not getting any younger.”
“Ah, alright, mother! I’m going! Going now…”
Embarrassed, Ruyi fled.
“Hold on!”
Sanniang called her back and stepped forward to press a coin pouch into Ruyi’s hand.
“Take this for the journey. Expenses add up.”
“Mother, I have silv— No, I…”
“Take it.”
Sanniang looked at her intently. “My Ruyi is all grown. Your old mother hasn’t had many chances lately to give you spending money. Mustn’t forget that part.”
What exactly shouldn’t be forgotten, she didn’t spell out.
A pang of complex emotion hit Ruyi. She closed her fingers around the pouch.
“I’m off, Mother…”
Ruyi pressed her lips together and walked away from the estate, turning back to glance several times.
She trudged unhappily back towards Chuanfeng Alley. Lihua was already waiting for her on the roof tiles.
The cat leaped down, landing neatly on Ruyi’s shoulder.
“Go?” Lihua asked.
Ruyi glanced at the cat and nodded.
Lihua said, “Miss Yun mentioned a merchant caravan. They can give us a ride soon.”
Ruyi paused. Looking up, she saw Miss Yun standing at the gate, waiting for her.
Xiang looked at her and smiled. “I thought about gifting you a fine horse, but knowing you can’t ride… Instead, the caravan leader will have something for you later. Consider it my farewell gift.”
“But that’s too much!”
“Go on, quickly.”
Ruyi couldn’t hold out against Xiang’s urging and was finally spurred forward.
The caravan was already waiting at the entrance to Chuanfeng Alley.
“Miss, time to depart,” called Headman Cao, the caravan leader.
Ruyi cupped her hands respectfully. “Troubling you all.”
The caravan trundled out through the city gates.
They traveled until they reached a deserted stretch of road.
Headman Cao pulled a long wooden box from one of the carts.
“Miss, this is something my lady instructed me to hand to you.”
Ruyi was puzzled but reached out and opened the box.
Inside lay a spear. It gleamed silver, its point radiating a chill that prickled the skin.
This was no ordinary spear!
Lihua’s eyes sparkled as she looked at it.
Ruyi, too, sensed the extraordinary nature of this weapon.
