The Fish Demon was a demon who never forgot a kindness. He had sought out a blessed piece of land outside Shangjing City to bury his benefactor. From that spot, the Vermilion-Walled Imperial Palace was entirely out of sight; all one could see were the bustling streets of the mortal world.
When it came to Chancellor Liu, the Fish Demon seemed to have endless tales to tell.
He had only slowly begun to learn about the man after Chancellor Liu's death, yet he seemed not to have missed a single detail, ultimately uncovering the entire story of Liu Zhiyuan's life.
Chen Changsheng could not help but muse.
To be an official and yet be remembered so fondly by others—he was truly worthy of being called a good official.
As they spoke, they suddenly sensed a chilling aura of murder wash over them.
They turned to look.
Over in the lakeside pavilion's Ritual Cauldron, the incense was on the verge of burning out. The ash tumbled down; only moments remained.
Many demons were restless and ready to strike, while others lurked in the shadows, not yet in a rush to make their move.
He took a step aside and put away his Tianpeng Ruler.
"The incense has burned out. Everyone, do as you please."
Tapping his toes, Daoist Wuwei vaulted from the pavilion's railing and drifted out over the lake.
The instant he departed, violence erupted atop the pavilion!
Several figures lunged forward.
They dashed straight for the incense on the table.
"Crash!"
The table shattered on impact, scattering the incense.
"Get lost!"
Amid the shouts, someone threw a punch, knocking back the person beside them.
Several hands snatched at the incense, immediately devolving into a chaotic brawl.
"Who dares compete with me?!"
A flash of silver lit the air as someone flicked their sleeve; a Short Blade appeared in their hand, slashing at those around them.
"Ah!"
Agonized screams rang out. A demon clutched its throat, black mist seeping from the bloody gash as it coughed up blood and reverted to its true form.
Right in the midst of the brawl.
Another figure emerged from the lake and stepped onto the pavilion.
He walked up the stairs step by step, shedding water. Seeing the brawl atop the pavilion, he froze for a moment and shouted, "Hey, hey! What are you fighting for? What are you fighting for?"
"Where did this idiot come from?!"
Someone threw a kick his way.
The man took the blow squarely to the chest and stumbled half a step back.
His gaze was utterly bewildered as he asked, "Why did you hit me?"
"Why did you hit me?!"
As he spoke, he grew angry.
He hurled a punch forward.
"Bang!"
It was accompanied by the sound of breaking bone.
A figure was sent hurtling backward, flying several zhang through the air before plummeting into the lake and kicking up a massive splash. That single punch had nearly taken his life.
Circling in the sky above, Yan Zi was startled by the sight.
"Such great strength?"
Yan Zi did not rush to act, choosing instead to continue watching.
An ox demon?
He was likely a bit unusual.
No ordinary ox demon possessed that kind of strength.
"He knocked him so far..." Ruyi muttered, adding, "This one probably isn't human either."
"That is an ox demon," the Fish Demon said. "He has always cultivated at a farmstead outside Shangjing City. I saw him a few times in my early years."
"Cultivating at a farmstead?" Ruyi was puzzled.
The Fish Demon nodded. "By plowing the fields for the master of the house. He has already accompanied that family through three generations."
Realization dawned on Ruyi, and she asked, "What about you? Aren't you going to try your luck at this Investiture of Immortals Assembly?"
The Fish Demon shook his head. "The Human Sovereign murdered my benefactor. To me, this Human Dao Investiture is nothing but a thief's charity."
Hearing this, Ruyi said, "I like your temperament. It's quite good."
The Fish Demon offered a warm smile and fell silent.
Daoist Wuwei slowly walked over from the surface of the lake.
Seeing Mister Qingshan, he approached.
Chen Changsheng's gaze followed him. Seeing his silence, he took the initiative to say, "Priest, why not come over and sit down?"
Daoist Wuwei then stepped forward and took a seat among them.
Seeing the Daoist, the Fish Demon cupped his hands. "Greetings, Priest."
Daoist Wuwei glanced at him and said, "You are the Fish Demon from the bottom of Lake Mountain Lake?"
"Indeed, I am."
Daoist Wuwei gave him another sweeping look, then nodded and said nothing more.
Lihua padded closer to Daoist Wuwei and said, "Priest, you were so impressive just now."
Daoist Wuwei naturally recognized this Tabby Cat.
He simply found it somewhat unbelievable.
Because he could not sense even a shred of resentment directed at him from Lihua.
Daoist Wuwei asked, "I nearly hurt you back then; do you not mind?"
Lihua blinked. "Are you going to hurt Lihua now, Priest?"
Daoist Wuwei shook his head. "I was blind to right and wrong back then. I abandoned such thoughts long ago."
"Then there you go."
Lihua said, "Chen the Good Man told me once that acknowledging your mistakes and correcting them is the greatest virtue. Isn't that exactly what you've done, Priest?"
Daoist Wuwei let out a long sigh after hearing this. "I am deeply ashamed."
"Ashamed of what?" Lihua did not quite understand.
Ruyi scooped the cat up and said to the Daoist, "Daoist, my family's Lihua might have a broad mind and not hold it against you, but I certainly won't let it slide. You had better stop talking to our Lihua, or I'll take my spear and poke a couple of holes in you!"
Daoist Wuwei's heart trembled slightly. He opened his mouth and said, "If you poke two holes in me, will it quell your anger, Miss?"
Ruyi said, "I don't fall for that. If you let me strike, I absolutely won't hold back!"
Daoist Wuwei raised his hands, holding up the Tianpeng Ruler in both palms and offering it forward.
"Please go ahead, Miss."
Ruyi stared at him coldly. Without hesitation, she snatched the Tianpeng Ruler into her hands.
Raising her hand, she prepared to stab it forward.
Seeing this, Lihua hurriedly stopped Ruyi, saying, "Ruyi, don't..."
It was somewhat frantic, somewhat at a loss.
Ruyi asked, "Stupid Lihua! Why are you stopping me?! That stinky Daoist tried to kill you back then!"
Lihua opened its mouth and said, "Lihua... Lihua wasn't hurt. And he didn't... didn't kill me either, did he?"
It looked at Ruyi, its gaze carrying a hint of pleading.
It seemed that everyone treated Mao'er well, and Mao'er treated others exactly the same.
Its mind was simple and full of goodwill; it rarely harbored malice.
Holding the ruler, Ruyi stared at Lihua in deep exasperation.
She did not understand.
Daoist Wuwei lowered his head and closed his eyes. He said nothing, offering not a single word of defense for himself.
He felt he ought to give an account for this matter.
That was why he had come.
Lihua looked back at the Daoist and said, "Priest, Priest! Hurry up and leave! What are you sitting here for?"
Hearing this, Daoist Wuwei opened his eyes.
He opened his mouth, a chaotic storm of emotions swirling in his heart.
"Leave!" Lihua urged.
Seeing Lihua shielding him, Ruyi felt a sense of helplessness in her heart.
She was just about to pull back her hand.
Right at that moment, a force seemed to transmit from the Tianpeng Ruler.
At some point, the Daoist's hand had grasped the Tianpeng Ruler.
He yanked the Tianpeng Ruler toward himself.
"Squelch..."
The Tianpeng Ruler pierced right through his robes and drove through his shoulder.
Fresh blood soaked his clothes and spilled out.
Daoist Wuwei's face instantly turned pale, yet one of his hands still gripped the Tianpeng Ruler.
Everyone present froze in shock.
Lihua stared blankly at the Daoist, muttering, "Priest..."
The pale-faced Daoist looked at the cat and forced a smile.
Like bathing in a spring breeze.
