Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 764: A Late-Night Visit

Chen Changsheng had planned to turn in for the night.

The slight buzz of alcohol was rather pleasant; at the very least, it settled his complicated thoughts.

Yet, of course, someone had to come and disturb him at a time like this.

"Knock, knock..."

The knocking was incredibly soft, almost imperceptible.

Chen Changsheng paused and looked up.

At first, he assumed it was Yu Hongjin or Zhishu. But reaching out with his senses, he discovered that the person standing at his door was actually the King of Wei, whom he had met earlier that day.

The King of Wei stood at the threshold with his hands clasped behind his back, waiting for Chen Changsheng to open the door.

He glanced left and right, looking rather like a thief with a guilty conscience.

The King of Wei was about to answer, but stopped to clear his throat instead. "Just open the door," he said.

Chen Changsheng smiled. "That will not do. If I do not know who is out there, This Chen will not open the door."

The King of Wei hesitated before snapping with a dark expression, "Are you going to open it or not?"

"I will not!"

"You..."

The King of Wei coughed, then leaned close to the crack in the door and whispered, "I am the King of Wei."

Feigning sudden realization, Chen Changsheng said, "Oh, so it is Prince Wei."

"Now that you know, hurry up and open the door."

"I will not."

"Hmm?"

The King of Wei froze. "Are you going to open this door or not?!"

"During the day, Prince Wei threatened to bring his men to arrest This Chen," Chen Changsheng said. "How could This Chen dare to open the door?"

The King of Wei paused, glancing back at the several guards following behind him.

He raised a hand and waved them off.

Understanding his intent, the guards backed away.

"I came alone," the King of Wei said.

"Even if you are alone, This Chen will not open it," Chen Changsheng said. "The King of Wei and dogs are forbidden from entering This Chen's courtyard."

"You dare humiliate this king!"

"This Chen is indeed humiliating you. If you have a problem with that, then bring your men and break in!"

"Good, good, good! Fine, fine, fine!"

Furious, the King of Wei spat the words out.

He glanced around, looking entirely ready to bash the door down.

But after a moment of consideration, he stopped himself. He flicked his sleeve in frustration and called out, "This king did not come here to cause trouble. Just open the door!"

Seeing this, Chen Changsheng decided to stop teasing the King of Wei. He raised a hand; the latch fell away, and the door slowly creaked open.

Seeing the door open, the King of Wei stepped inside.

He looked around and frowned. "Why haven't you lit a candle?"

"Prince Wei is a prince, after all," Chen Changsheng said. "How would you know how much candles and lamp oil cost?"

Prince Wei gave a light cough.

But then he watched as Chen Changsheng stepped forward and lit the oil lamp anyway.

"You just said lamp oil was expensive," Prince Wei pointed out.

"It is expensive, but This Chen is not poor."

"You..."

Prince Wei was utterly speechless.

Chen Changsheng walked over to a long bench and sat down. "Please, take a seat, Prince Wei."

The King of Wei sat down and looked at Chen Changsheng.

The man looked perfectly ordinary, yet at the same time, anything but.

"I wonder for what matter Prince Wei has paid this late-night visit," Chen Changsheng asked. "Could it be that you really came to make trouble for This Chen, as you claimed this afternoon, and simply could not wait until tomorrow?"

Prince Wei raised a hand and coughed lightly. Then, bringing his hands out from behind his back, he placed a Painted Scroll onto the table.

"What is the meaning of this, Prince Wei?" Chen Changsheng asked.

Prince Wei averted his gaze, looking somewhat embarrassed. "During the day, Priest Xuan Chengzi was present, and this king could not put aside his pride. Now that it is just the two of us, this king wishes to apologize for what happened before. Consider this Painted Scroll an apology gift."

Chen Changsheng stared at him, taken aback, and let out a bewildered sound.

"Huh?"

Prince Wei still avoided Chen Changsheng's gaze, his eyes darting elsewhere. He coughed twice more. "An apology gift. Yes."

He looked incredibly uncomfortable right now, shifting as if covered in ants.

He seemed completely unable to figure out what to do with his limbs, feeling the hem of his robes one moment and tapping the chair beneath him the next.

Once Chen Changsheng realized what was happening, he burst out laughing.

Hearing his laughter, Prince Wei's face darkened. "Hey, hey, a chuckle is enough! Do not completely disregard my authority as the King of Wei!"

"I will stop, I will stop," Chen Changsheng said, waving his hands as he reined in his amusement.

He paused for a moment before asking, "But This Chen is somewhat curious. Are you truly the King of Wei?"

Prince Wei's eyes went wide at these words. He looked at Chen Changsheng and said, "If I am not the King of Wei, are you?"

"Then why don't you let me be the king?" Chen Changsheng replied.

"Get lost!"

The King of Wei cursed.

Chen Changsheng chuckled and waved his hand. "Just a joke."

He was simply a bit surprised. If one were to say this King of Wei put on royal airs, he could still swallow his pride and come to apologize in the middle of the night. But if one were to say he had no airs at all, he had stubbornly clung to his face earlier at Qingxian Temple, acting without a shred of true royal majesty.

The King of Wei glared at him. "You truly have zero respect for this king."

Chen Changsheng glanced at him and said, "We are all human. Just because you are the King of Wei, must This Chen look up to you? Not to mention, Prince Wei has, in a way, offended This Chen in the past."

"Who offended whom?!" The King of Wei glared at Chen Changsheng. "My men had not even made a move yet, and they were all slaughtered by that old man! Do you know how many silver taels and how much effort it takes to raise a group like that?"

Chen Changsheng smiled helplessly and said, "I say, Prince Wei, did you not come here tonight to apologize? Why are you still acting so self-righteous?"

The King of Wei opened his mouth and said, "Be reasonable, is this king not pitiful? Not to mention my subordinates being killed, I still have to come apologize, and I have to endure your scolding. Ever since I became a prince, I have only made a few mistakes, yet I hit a wall with you, and now you refuse to let it go!"

Chen Changsheng gave a genial smile. Glancing at the painting on the table, he said, "Perhaps the prince should be glad he did not come looking for trouble today."

Prince Wei blinked. "You talk a big game. This king simply did not want to go against his conscience. In Cultivation, one must never allow an inner demon to impede their path. Do you honestly think this king is afraid of you?"

Chen Changsheng did not explain further, but instead said, "Perhaps."

He picked up the Painted Scroll from the table, took a glance, and asked, "Is this painting valuable?"

The King of Wei looked at him and said, "Are you planning to sell a gift this king gave you?"

Chen Changsheng paused. "Prince Wei wouldn't have just grabbed a worthless painting to pass it off as a gift, would he?"

"Ahem..."

Prince Wei coughed lightly and said, "How could I? This painting is valuable. Yes, it is worth a bit of money."

"Is that so?"

Chen Changsheng slowly unrolled the Painted Scroll.

By the glow of the oil lamp and a bit of moonlight, Chen Changsheng saw clearly what was painted on the scroll.

It was a portrait of a person.

Chen Changsheng froze, then looked up at the King of Wei.

Prince Wei seemed not to have expected Chen Changsheng to open it right then and there, and for a moment, he looked somewhat embarrassed.

"Where did Prince Wei get this painting?" Chen Changsheng asked.

Making an excuse, Prince Wei replied, "This painting was kept in this king's study. It is exceedingly precious."

Chen Changsheng smiled. "You just grabbed it in passing, didn't you?"

"How could I! You cannot just spout nonsense."
