Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 776: Don't Sell to Him

Chen Changsheng woke up early and went out to the street for a bowl of noodles.

He stopped at the noodle stall right across from the tea house.

The kind old stall owner, worried that Chen Changsheng might not get enough to eat, added an extra handful of noodles to his bowl.

The broth had hardly any oil and was quite light, but setting up shop right outside the tea house was perfect. Most patrons here preferred a lighter taste. The stalls selling heavy, greasy food usually set up near the laborers.

A bowl was also incredibly cheap—just three copper coins.

It was even cheaper than a bowl of tea from the tea house.

Just as the old man himself said, he only kept the stall running to give himself something to do.

Sitting nearby, the old man chatted with him. "I can tell you have an extraordinary air about you. You don't look like an ordinary commoner."

Chen Changsheng laughed. "You must be joking. I'm no important person. When have you ever seen an important person coming here every day to eat noodles?"

"Looking the part is one thing, but if I'm not, then I'm not," Chen Changsheng said.

The old man chuckled. "That's hard to say. We've only met a few times, but I can just feel that you're a capable man. You'll definitely become a great official one day."

Chen Changsheng waved his hand. "That won't do. Being a great official is nowhere near as comfortable as being an ordinary commoner."

"Is being a great official a bad thing?"

"In my eyes, it is."

The old man laughed. "You're a strange one."

Chen Changsheng grinned. "Hearing you say that, do you hope to one day become a master or a great official yourself?"

The old man shook his head. "I wouldn't. That'd be too exhausting. Think about it. The whole world is fighting a war right now; people are dying here and there. But our Qingshan City carries on as if nothing is happening. Just imagine how difficult that must be. Prince Wei must have racked his brains to make this happen."

Chen Changsheng nodded. "That's true. It certainly isn't easy."

Maintaining a pure sanctuary in such a chaotic world was no small feat.

This was likely why the commoners were so willing to support the King of Wei. The logic was simple: you give me food and let me live, and I will gladly help you.

The old man blinked. "But speaking of which, in all these years, I've never even laid eyes on Prince Wei. People say he lives right over there in that grand manor, yet not a single person has caught a glimpse of him."

"Is that so?" Chen Changsheng blinked. He didn't think Prince Wei was the type who disliked leaving the house.

Chen Changsheng said, "Maybe he just doesn't want people to know who he is. He might have even come here to eat your noodles."

"How is that possible?" The old man just took it as a joke.

"I'm serious."

By then, Chen Changsheng had already finished his noodles. He set down his chopsticks and paid.

"I'll come back for noodles another time. Farewell, old man."

"All right, take care."

Chen Changsheng stood up and headed for the tea house. With free time on his hands, listening to a storyteller sounded fine.

Just as he walked out of the noodle stall, he saw someone walking straight toward him.

With that prominent belly and a smiling face, who else could it be but Prince Wei?

The moment Prince Wei spotted Chen Changsheng, his smile vanished instantly.

Chen Changsheng looked at him, glancing him up and down.

Prince Wei rolled his eyes at him and said, "What rotten luck."

"Where are your guards?" Chen Changsheng asked.

"What's it to you?"

The prickly King of Wei seemed unwilling to say much more to Chen Changsheng.

Chen Changsheng smiled and said, "Such a fiery temper. Weren't you just smiling a moment ago? Why the long face the second you see This Chen? Could it be you have some problem with This Chen?"

Prince Wei looked at him and said, "You're asking even though you already know the answer, aren't you? Are you doing this on purpose?"

"How could I?"

Chen Changsheng said with a smile, "But what are you doing here? Aren't you afraid an assassin might pop out on the street and slaughter you with a single slash?"

Prince Wei shot him a look and said, "Where do you think we are? If I actually ran into an assassin here, I might as well stop being a prince altogether."

"Such confidence."

"Naturally."

Prince Wei raised a brow and waved him off. "Why am I saying so much to you? Go on, go on. I don't have the patience to deal with you."

Chen Changsheng gave a slight nod and waved. "Farewell."

Prince Wei snorted coldly, then walked toward the noodle stall.

"A bowl of noodles."

The old man nodded with a smile. "Coming right up. A few extra vegetable leaves?"

"Yes." Prince Wei seemed very well-acquainted with the old man; he clearly came here for noodles often.

The old man smiled. "Haven't seen much of you these past two days. What happened?"

Prince Wei waved his hand and said, "Let's not talk about it, let's not talk about it. I'm full of anger right now."

"All right, all right."

The old man didn't ask any further and went to cook the noodles.

Watching this scene, Chen Changsheng couldn't help but stare in surprise for a moment.

"This is really..."

Chen Changsheng lowered his head in thought for a moment before quickly snapping back to his senses.

He couldn't help but find it curious. He shook his head and walked into the tea house.

The old man cooking the noodles asked, "You seemed to know that fellow just now."

"Ah? Who?" Prince Wei asked.

The old man said, "That Mister in the green robes. He just finished eating a bowl of noodles."

"Him..."

Prince Wei slightly raised an eyebrow and said, "Don't know him, don't know him."

The old man was taken aback and said, "But I just heard you two talking?"

Prince Wei asked, "Does he come here for noodles often?"

"Not exactly. He came yesterday, and came again today. We've chatted a bit."

"Hey, listen to me," Prince Wei said. He glanced behind him, and seeing that Chen Changsheng had already entered the tea house, he finally spoke up, "He is not a good person!"

The old man blanked for a moment upon hearing this. "Ah?"

Prince Wei flicked his sleeve and said, "You didn't know, did you? You look at these people, all dressed up like proper gentlemen, but in reality, their hearts are rotten to the core. A while back, I saw him..."

He just went on and on like this.

None of it was anything good, saying Chen Changsheng was a petty thief, saying Chen Changsheng did this and that...

The old man remained in a daze and said, "That... shouldn't be right. He doesn't look the sort."

Prince Wei scoffed and said, "What of it? You can know a man's face, but not his heart. Next time he comes around, don't sell him any noodles. That brat is rotten."

The old man smiled helplessly and said, "If a person wants to eat, I can't just refuse to sell, right? Wouldn't that be offending someone? No, no, I couldn't."

"Hey, listen to me, you can't go wrong. Just don't sell to him."

"This..."

"What are you afraid of? Just come find me later. If he makes trouble, I'd love nothing more. I have people in the Magistrate's Office."

"Then... then I won't sell to him."

Prince Wei laughed, nodding repeatedly. "That's right, that's right."

Back inside the tea house, Chen Changsheng had barely taken his seat when he suddenly felt his nose itch.

He took a sip of tea, feeling slightly puzzled.

He couldn't shake the feeling that someone was slandering him behind his back.

Chen Changsheng didn't pay it any mind. He simply turned back to drinking his tea, eating kidney beans, and listening to the storyteller.

The day was just right.
