Zhang Miao was a hospitable man. He kept Chen Changsheng engaged with all sorts of amusing stories.
Listening to him, Chen Changsheng was suddenly reminded of An Longmo, Aqing's father. He still hadn't forgotten the pot of Peach Blossom Wine from years ago, nor its endless flavor.
What set Zhang Miao apart, however, was his innate steadiness. It was exactly as Aqing had described to Chen Changsheng back then—Sanniang's husband was an honest man. Or rather, he was a profoundly genuine person.
He treated others with a gentle modesty, leaving no room to find fault with him.
Above all, he treated Sanniang exceptionally well. Though they were getting on in years, their every word and gesture overflowed with affection.
"Sanniang and I met while planting rice in the fields."
Zhang Miao smiled. "There was a terrible drought that year. All the rice in the fields withered and died..."
He went on to recount how he and Sanniang first met, and how they eventually came to be together.
Truth be told, widows were often looked down upon. Most men would never willingly marry one. In this day and age, people valued a woman's chastity above all else; if her husband died, she would be hard-pressed to ever remarry.
From the bottom of his heart, he believed she was an extraordinary woman.
Raising two children in such chaotic times was no small feat. Zhang Miao himself wasn't confident he could have brought two children up safely under those conditions, but Sanniang had done exactly that.
Ever since he learned of this, he had often found himself wondering.
Just what kind of woman was she...
And so, their story began.
As he recounted these past events, Sanniang, whose hair was now tinged with white, would lower her head in embarrassment. Whenever she grew too bashful, she would tug at Zhang Miao's hand to let him know.
If one had to use a word to describe them...
...it would be inseparable.
Perhaps it sounded a bit inappropriate. After all, they were both getting on in years, making it seem undignified, as if it were a bit too explicit.
But in Chen Changsheng's eyes, there was nothing inappropriate about it.
To reach such an age and still be described with such a word was truly remarkable.
As Zhang Miao finished, he smiled and said, "Meeting Sanniang must be a blessing I cultivated over several lifetimes."
His gaze as he looked at Sanniang was entirely sincere.
It was a simple phrase, yet it struck straight at the heart.
Chen Changsheng could only cover his face. "I don't understand, I don't understand..."
These words drew a burst of laughter from the couple.
Sanniang asked, "What about you, Brother Chen? After all these years, have you taken a wife?"
Chen Changsheng paused for a moment and said, "Sanniang, you know me."
Hearing this, Sanniang let out a sigh.
Zhang Miao, however, didn't quite understand. "Is there some hidden difficulty?" he asked.
It seemed Sanniang hadn't told Zhang Miao everything.
Chen Changsheng smiled. "This Chen has no fixed home. I am truly unsuited for marriage."
"Is that so..."
Zhang Miao nodded upon hearing this. "But that's no obstacle. Once Changsheng settles down, I'll introduce you to a few. With Changsheng being so handsome, and your extraordinary bearing and speech, I imagine you won't have to worry."
Chen Changsheng waved his hand and smiled. "We'll see, we'll see."
Sanniang gave Zhang Miao a light tap and smiled. "Brother Chen doesn't need anyone to introduce him."
Hearing this, Zhang Miao understood.
Chen Changsheng smiled, not daring to follow up.
Sanniang looked at Chen Changsheng and said, "Allow me to speak out of turn, and please don't blame me, Brother Chen."
"Go ahead and speak, Sanniang."
"Aqing and Miss Yun are both wonderful ladies."
Chen Changsheng didn't know how to answer. After a long silence, he let out a sigh and said, "Actually, I am well aware in my heart. Sanniang, you should also know my helplessness..."
Sanniang nodded and said, "Mm."
She had merely brought it up in passing.
Both Aqing and Miss Yun had taken good care of her, and both were good women. Sanniang knew she shouldn't meddle in these affairs, but she also hoped that Brother Chen would soon have someone by his side, so he wouldn't be lonely.
The meal lasted until the sky began to grow dark.
Chen Changsheng carried a faint scent of alcohol on him.
The couple saw him out, and Sanniang scooped him a bowl of Chicken Soup to take with him, heavy on the meat and light on the broth.
Chen Changsheng couldn't bring himself to refuse, so he accepted it.
"Thank you, Sanniang."
"Mm." Sanniang nodded with a smile. "Come visit often."
"I will." Chen Changsheng nodded, then waved and bid them farewell.
They parted ways at the doorway.
Who knew when he would next return for a meal.
Wang Sanniang watched Brother Chen's receding back, falling into a brief daze.
Perhaps it was because a suspicion in her heart had finally been confirmed, leaving her stunned.
After so many years, she really would be a fool if she couldn't piece it together.
Zhang Miao then asked, "Sanniang, this Changsheng is far from ordinary."
Sanniang nodded and said, "He is."
"Husband?"
"Hmm?"
"Actually, even more than ten years ago, Brother Chen looked exactly like this."
Zhang Miao froze upon hearing this. "What do you mean?"
Sanniang looked at him and sighed. "Brother Chen, he doesn't age..."
Zhang Miao suddenly understood, freezing the moment he looked back.
"Is... that true?"
"Mm."
Zhang Miao's lips parted slightly, unable to speak for a long time.
Put that way...
...hadn't he just shared a meal with an Immortal!
.
.
Chen Changsheng made his way back, carrying that bowl of Chicken Soup.
He passed by the tea house.
Inside, he saw the waiters busy clearing the tables and tea bowls.
Cao Fa was helping out, and Zhishu was there as well.
Master Jin San sat off to the side drinking tea. Watching Cao Fa and Zhishu chatting and laughing, he couldn't help but shake his head repeatedly.
Seeing this, Chen Changsheng walked inside.
Zhishu turned her head and spotted the Mister. She hastily set down her work and said, "Greetings, Mister Chen."
Cao Fa and Master Jin San reacted as well.
"Greetings, Mister!"
The waiter blanked for a moment, but seeing this, he couldn't help but cup his hands and say, "Greetings... Mister..."
The waiter was somewhat dumbfounded.
Just which Mister was this?
Why had he never seen him before?
Chen Changsheng smiled. "This Chen merely came to take a look. Carry on with your work."
Chen Changsheng stepped forward and took a seat, placing the Chicken Soup on the table.
Master Jin San said, "This soup is wonderfully fresh."
Chen Changsheng nodded. "Indeed. I went to an old acquaintance's house for a meal, and they insisted I bring it back."
Master Jin San nodded, then poured him some tea.
"Have some tea, Mister."
"Thank you."
Zhishu and Cao Fa walked over.
Chen Changsheng looked at Zhishu and asked, "Are you adapting well?"
Zhishu nodded. "Much better than before. I used to fear the light during the day and could only come out at night. Now, I can even step out for a bit of a walk on overcast days. It is entirely thanks to you, Mister, that Zhishu can do this."
Chen Changsheng gave a slight nod and said, "That is good."
He then looked at Cao Fa and asked, "How is your health?"
Cao Fa replied, "Thank you for your concern, Mister. This student is still reasonably healthy for now."
Master Jin San paused upon hearing this, but he didn't expose anything.
Chen Changsheng reached into his sleeve and handed over three Elixir Pills.
Cao Fa froze at the sight and asked, "These are...?"
"These Elixir Pills are something This Chen acquired in his early years, but in the end, they proved completely useless."
"Take these Elixir Pills. Given your current condition, it's highly unlikely they will extend your lifespan, but they can at least improve your present state somewhat."
