Immortal Travel of Longevity
Chapter 792: Always Accompanied by HelplessnessAfter leaving the Elixir Pills behind, Chen Changsheng prepared to depart.
Cao Fa hurried forward to stop Mister and return the Elixir Pills to him.
But when he turned his head, Mister had already vanished.
Cao Fa froze, rubbing his eyes.
A worker in the tea house was equally stunned.
"Where—where did he go?"
The worker pointed blankly toward the door.
He had just been standing right there, but in the blink of an eye, he was gone.
This gave the worker quite a fright.
Cao Fa paused. He glanced at Zhishu and asked, "What do we do about this?"
Zhishu sighed. "Since Mister left them, just accept them. It wouldn't be right to try and return them now."
Cao Fa pursed his lips. Looking at the Elixir Pills, he muttered, "I'm ashamed to accept them..."
Chen Changsheng had no desire to push back and forth over the matter.
He was always like this in these situations. Figuring that rather than listen to the nagging—and perhaps even fail to out-stubborn Cao Fa—it was easier to just leave.
Years ago, he had intended to give those Elixir Pills to Yan Huanglou, but...
Thinking it over, it was better to give them to someone in need. Keeping them for himself served no purpose anyway.
He returned to his courtyard that evening.
Chen Changsheng set the Chicken Soup in the Kitchen.
Then, he lay back on the long bench in the courtyard to rest.
Bathing in the night breeze and enjoying the fleeting coolness, he fell into a deep sleep.
...
Early the next morning.
Miss Yun came knocking.
"I ran into a vendor selling water chestnut cakes on the morning street. Have a taste, Mister."
Chen Changsheng sat up and said, "Many thanks, Miss Yun."
He placed a piece of the cake into his mouth. It was incredibly fragrant and sweet.
He nodded, looking at Yunxiang. "Delicious."
Chen Changsheng paused before asking, "Have you eaten breakfast, Miss Yun?"
Yunxiang shook her head. "I had no appetite this morning."
"Are you feeling unwell?"
"Yes. When you get old, you're bound to pick up a few ailments."
Yunxiang continued, "In my younger years, I was so busy with the trading firm that I often went hungry. I didn't think much of it back then, but I'm truly suffering for it now."
Chen Changsheng hesitated, then said, "Yesterday, I had a meal at Wang Sanniang's house and brought some Chicken Soup back. Would you like a bowl? It might be a little rich..."
Hearing this, Yunxiang paused. She looked at Mister Chen but didn't speak for a long time.
Under her gaze, Chen Changsheng lowered his head. "Is something wrong?"
Yunxiang shook her head. "It's nothing."
"Then, do you want some?"
"I do."
"Then This Chen will go heat it up."
Chen Changsheng coughed lightly, then got up and went into the Kitchen to warm the soup.
Watching Mister Chen's hurried retreat, Yunxiang covered her mouth and chuckled.
She then picked up another piece of water chestnut cake and took a bite.
It was delicious.
A moment later, Chen Changsheng brought the hot soup out.
Seeing her eating the cake, he asked, "Is your appetite better?"
Yunxiang nodded. "Just looking at Mister improves my appetite."
Chen Changsheng coughed lightly again upon hearing that.
Yunxiang asked, feigning ignorance, "Did Mister catch a cold? Why do you keep coughing?"
Chen Changsheng looked a bit helpless. "You're asking when you already know the answer, Miss Yun."
Yunxiang smiled. "So Mister can also get shy and feel embarrassed."
"Naturally," Chen Changsheng replied. "This Chen is not a block of stone. At the end of the day, I am human too. I get angry, I feel joy, and I also experience grief and sorrow..."
Yunxiang nodded. "That's how it should be. The current Mister is much more likable."
Chen Changsheng froze at her words.
Yunxiang went on, "You're no longer so lofty, no longer so distant. I can just reach out and touch you."
Chen Changsheng smiled at that.
"So what exactly has been changing Mister?" Yunxiang asked.
Chen Changsheng thought for a moment before saying, "Probably..."
"...since the moment I stepped into Qingshan City. Slowly, I came to understand some things. It has been a form of Cultivation."
The people he met were all changing him.
Yan Huanglou, Lihua, Yu Hongjin, Ping'an, Ruyi, the old fishmonger he chanced upon in the city, and many, many more—all kinds of people.
Through countless people and events, Chen Changsheng had gradually found himself again.
"Does Yunxiang deserve some credit for that?" she asked.
Chen Changsheng nodded with a smile. "Naturally."
He would always remember this woman, who had been waiting for him ever since she was just a maid.
Yunxiang smiled from the bottom of her heart and nodded. "That's good then."
Chen Changsheng picked up a bowl and ladled her some Chicken Soup.
Yunxiang took a sip and nodded. "It's delicious."
Chen Changsheng agreed. "Sanniang's cooking has always been quite good."
"Sanniang's husband is a blessed man."
"Indeed."
Yunxiang thought for a moment before saying, "If Mister likes Chicken Soup, Yunxiang will stew some for you next time."
"Ah?"
"Yunxiang's cooking is very good too."
Chen Changsheng coughed softly. "Miss Yun, you..."
Yunxiang covered her mouth and giggled, deciding not to tease him anymore.
Ever since she recovered all of Zhu Qi's memories, she had grown much bolder. She was no longer bashful around Mister, speaking her mind freely and frequently joking around with him.
Yet she was still herself. Beneath her words, her true feelings remained quietly woven in. Just like in the old days, she hid her many thoughts and affections within brief, passing remarks.
After finishing the Chicken Soup, Yunxiang asked, "Is Mister in a hurry to leave this year?"
Chen Changsheng paused. "Not in a rush, exactly, but there are still some places I want to visit. I made a promise previously, so I need to get to the bottom of the matter."
"Where to?"
"I'll be heading south to Yan Land first, then to Jindi, and finally to Shangjing."
"That's quite far..."
Yunxiang paused.
Chen Changsheng nodded. "It is a bit far."
Yunxiang considered this and said, "Young Master Tang also asked me to make a trip to Shangjing. Since that's the case, why doesn't Mister bring Yunxiang along?"
Chen Changsheng hesitated. "This Chen will be taking a long detour, you know."
Yunxiang shook her head. "That doesn't matter."
Chen Changsheng sank into thought.
Seeing him like this, Yunxiang said, "If it puts you in a difficult position..."
"It doesn't."
Chen Changsheng replied.
Yunxiang froze slightly at his words, then smiled once more.
In her early years, she had wanted to follow Mister and see the world. Not to see the scenery along the road, but to watch him—to see exactly what he experienced on his journeys.
A moment later, Miss Yun returned to the small courtyard across the street.
Sitting in the courtyard, Chen Changsheng let out a long breath.
However, a sudden sense of worry swelled in his heart.
For some inexplicable reason, it felt a little strange.
In her younger days, Miss Yun had never asked to travel with him, yet now she brought it up out of nowhere.
Thinking it over, Chen Changsheng could roughly guess the answer.
Perhaps it was because of the unrecoverable years that had slipped away.
Miss Yun was no longer the maid she once was.
Perhaps she had always harbored such thoughts. It was just that, much of the time, they were accompanied by helplessness.
