"Souls could easily become stranded in the Netherworld. Furthermore, Hong Luan died in the Mass Grave—a place thick with Yin energy and endless resentment. She had perished unjustly, her heart full of bitter unwillingness."

Over time, her Three Souls and Seven Spirits had become entangled in that resentment, stripping away her reason.

Later on, Pangolin dug her out from that pile of corpses, finally giving her something to possess.

As for that box, Pangolin stumbled upon it in The Tomb by sheer chance. Most likely, the Prince's Manor concocted an excuse to erect a cenotaph and buried the Glazed Box inside.

After hearing this, Chen Changsheng fell into deep thought.

"The great monk..."

In all of this, the only two points of suspicion lay with that great monk, and the person who delivered the Glazed Box.

"Are people from the Buddhist Schools interfering as well? But looking at how this played out, it seems they merely left things to fate."

Their motives did not appear very strong.

Hong Luan explained, "To answer the Immortal Master, that Glazed Box was a gift from a former high general who once served The Prince. When I was alive, I investigated the matter in secret. But scarcely half a month after he gifted the Glazed Box, that general died at home from eating too much duck."

"Eating too much duck?"

"According to the doctor, the high general suffered from a cold and weak spleen and stomach. Eating the duck triggered his condition, leading to his death."

"Though bizarre, it's hard to pick out any actual flaws in that conclusion."

This was why Hong Luan felt so helpless.

It seemed as if her efforts always turned up completely empty.

"The worst part is that after I died, even the City God thought I was spouting nonsense." Hong Luan lowered her head, looking somewhat dejected.

Chen Changsheng looked at her and said, "Truth be told, This Chen also hasn't noticed any problems with Prince Jin."

Hong Luan froze for a moment. She looked up at him, then pointed a finger toward the sky. "I am willing to swear a great oath! If even half a word is false, may I be struck by lightning and denied reincarnation for all eternity!"

Chen Changsheng stared at her. "Even now, you are already denied reincarnation for all eternity."

Hong Luan froze again. Her figure trembled, and she lowered her head.

Just as she was trying to figure out how to convince the man before her...

...she heard Chen Changsheng speak. "This Chen will believe your words for now."

Hong Luan was simultaneously shocked and delighted. She lifted her head, hope kindling in her eyes.

Chen Changsheng continued, "However, This Chen will still need to verify this matter in person."

Hong Luan nodded vigorously. "I have spoken no lies!"

"Mm."

Chen Changsheng nodded, then said, "Your spirit and soul are still weak, and This Chen cannot keep you here. But there is a place you can go..."

Hong Luan replied, "I leave everything to the Immortal Master."

Chen Changsheng thus escorted Hong Luan to the City God Temple in Donglin Ward.

The Badger Demon didn't refuse, temporarily sheltering this malevolent ghost.

Afterward, the Badger Demon invited Mister to stay for a cup of tea.

"Mister shouldn't be in a rush to travel. You might as well stay and amuse yourself in Donglin Ward for a few days."

Chen Changsheng waved his hand. "No need. Time is short; I cannot stay for many days."

"That is a pity..."

Chen Changsheng looked at the demon and asked, "How are your injuries?"

The Badger Demon replied, "I haven't even thanked Mister for the spiritual leaf gifted last night. I am already recovering."

"Mm."

Chen Changsheng said, "Take your time with it. Since we are here today, This Chen also wants to ask about your plans and future arrangements."

The Badger Demon immediately laid out its plans. "In my view, all of this still needs to start from the Demon Market. What we lack right now isn't experience, but rather someone who can hold the fort."

"Do you have any candidates in mind?"

"I do have one, but she might not be willing to help."

"Are you referring to the Forest Deer Immortal Official?"

The Badger Demon nodded. "The Forest Deer Immortal Official possesses an extraordinary Cultivation Base, and she is a celestial official. Any action she takes carries official weight. With her strength, I doubt any demon would dare disobey. However, if the demons of the mountain ravines were to gang up and attack together, it would still be troublesome."

"This is certainly a matter that requires gradual progress," Chen Changsheng said. "Besides, if you don't even try, how do you know she won't be willing?"

The Badger Demon paused. "Does Mister mean..."

The Badger Demon was instantly overjoyed.

Chen Changsheng cautioned, "But don't celebrate too early. If she is willing to help, her asking price will naturally be high. If you can't afford it, you still won't be able to enlist her aid."

"I understand. I understand."

The Badger Demon remained thrilled at heart. At the very least, Mister's words had provided hope. For Mister to say such a thing meant this matter was highly likely to succeed.

Chen Changsheng nodded. "Good. As for the matters in Donglin Ward, handle them as you see fit."

The Badger Demon cupped its hands in understanding.

After leaving the City God Temple, Chen Changsheng headed toward the Demon Market in the mountains.

It was worth noting that these mountains were shrouded in heavy fog even during the day. It felt as though a stretch of land had been deliberately fenced off to prevent outsiders from intruding.

Because of this ceaseless thick fog, the local commoners frequently called this place Fog Mountain. Few ever dared to set foot inside.

Chen Changsheng arrived beneath the willow tree.

At this moment, however, there was no Lantern hanging there.

Seeing Mister arrive, the Willow Tree Spirit used its Branches as limbs, cupping them in a respectful greeting.

Chen Changsheng said, "This Chen is going in to look for an old acquaintance. I hope you can grant me passage."

The Willow Tree Spirit did not stop him. It summoned a clear mountain breeze, parting the thick fog to reveal a path.

Chen Changsheng followed this path toward the Demon Market.

"Ouch."

As he walked, a figure suddenly collided with him.

Chen Changsheng paused. Looking down, he saw a dark-skinned youth carrying a bamboo basket on his back.

"Eh..."

The youth thought he had crashed into a tree, but upon looking up, he realized it was a person.

"I made it out? I made it out?!"

The youth cried out in surprise. But as he looked around, he suddenly froze.

His eyes widened in shock.

Why had the fog parted to both sides?

What was going on here?

This made absolutely no sense!

Chen Changsheng looked at him. "Are you here to gather herbs?"

He had noticed the basket on the boy's back was filled with various medicinal herbs.

"Ah!"

The youth snapped back to his senses. "Yes, and you are..."

He stared at the man, spacing out for a moment.

The Chen Changsheng before him had snow-white hair and a white beard. Dressed in green robes and walking amidst the white fog, he looked just like an Immortal.

"Are you an Immortal?" the youth blurted out inexplicably.

Hearing this, Chen Changsheng smiled. "This Chen is not an Immortal. Just like you, I am here to gather herbs."

"Gather herbs?" The youth blinked in confusion before catching on. "You're teasing me, right?"

Chen Changsheng chuckled. "Alright, no more idle chatter. If you don't head down the mountain now, you really won't be able to leave later."

"Ah, right, right, right!"

Remembering his situation, the youth took two quick steps down the mountain, but then abruptly turned to look at Chen Changsheng again.

"You aren't actually an Immortal, are you?" the youth asked.

Chen Changsheng shook his head. "I am not an Immortal."

Saying so, Chen Changsheng continued walking forward.

"Hey, wait!"

The youth wanted to chase after him, but suddenly saw the parted fog rolling back together.

He jumped in fright and hurriedly scrambled down the mountain.

The fog seemed to chase after him, driving him all the way down.

By the time he escaped the fog, the path that had opened up earlier was long gone, leaving behind nothing but an impenetrable haze.

The youth stood there bewildered, looking somewhat dazed.
