Immortal Travel of Longevity
Chapter 961: Five Qi Converging to the Origin“Ning Bufan...”
Chen Changsheng murmured. “I would rather be born extraordinary than fall into the dust. It truly is a good name...”
Ning Bufan punted the boat, the pole in his hands pausing for a moment. He froze, then said, “That old monk said the same thing.”
Chen Changsheng said, “That great master had high expectations for you.”
Ning Bufan paused before saying, “It’s a pity I’ve achieved nothing and already fallen into the dust.”
He sounded as if he were joking, but a moment later, he fell completely silent.
He said no more, focusing solely on rowing the boat.
Chen Changsheng asked, “How have you achieved nothing? Didn’t you make quite a name for yourself during the Investiture of Immortals Assembly?”
Ning Bufan let out a breath. “Having a big reputation doesn’t stop me from being a failure.”
Ning Bufan smacked his lips. “To put it bluntly, I only went to the Investiture of Immortals Assembly to fulfill that old monk’s wish. That’s in the past now, so let it stay there. As for me, I don’t know where to go, much less what I actually want. I’m just living, I guess. Same as before—no destination, no purpose. Just drifting. If I die one day, I die...”
Chen Changsheng paused and asked, “Without desire or purpose?”
Ning Bufan opened his mouth to answer, but after a moment of thought, he realized that wasn’t quite right. He shook his head. “I do have a purpose. My purpose is to figure out what it is I actually want.”
Hearing this, Chen Changsheng froze. “No wonder that great master pinned his hopes on you.”
“Huh?” Ning Bufan blinked, somewhat confused.
Chen Changsheng said, “You possess a profound root of wisdom.”
Ning Bufan didn’t really understand. “What does that mean? That I was born to be a monk?”
“More or less.”
“But I don’t want to be a monk.”
Ning Bufan said, “It’s true I can’t find my purpose, but that doesn’t mean my earthly desires have been severed. Not to mention, I’m just a common mortal. What kind of filthy, despicable things haven’t I done? A guy like me becoming a monk?”
Chen Changsheng nodded. “That’s a fair point. Whatever you do, it has to be of your own free will. However, that being said—did no one from the Buddhist Faction seek you out after the Investiture of Immortals Assembly?”
Ning Bufan parted his lips before answering. “They did, actually. But I refused to go. I managed to send them packing with just a few words, and they didn’t give me any trouble over it.”
“I see.”
Ning Bufan paused, looking over at Chen Changsheng. “Mister, do you think becoming a monk would suit me best?”
Chen Changsheng shook his head. “This Chen doesn’t think it would suit you at all.”
Ning Bufan broke into a faint smile upon hearing that. He felt the same way.
He had just been afraid that Chen Changsheng would say yes.
Watching Ning Bufan punt the boat, Chen Changsheng suddenly felt a trace of gratification.
Where did this gratification come from?
It was likely because both of them were men with nowhere to go. Relatively speaking, however, Chen Changsheng’s situation wasn’t quite as extreme as Ning Bufan’s. Chen Changsheng was merely without a purpose for the time being—a temporary state of affairs. Ning Bufan, on the other hand, truly didn’t know what he wanted out of life.
Ning Bufan asked, “Mister, where are we going?”
Chen Changsheng said, “I don’t know.”
“You don’t know?”
“That’s right.”
Ning Bufan’s movements faltered. “How can Mister not know?”
He began to panic a little.
The thing a man like him feared most was aimless drifting. If someone pointed him toward a destination, he would gladly head there, but wandering down a road without knowing where it led filled him with a profound sense of fear and unease.
Chen Changsheng smiled and said, “Isn’t this quite good? Wherever we end up is where we end up.”
Ning Bufan didn’t quite understand. He opened his mouth and said, “Doesn’t Mister feel uneasy?”
“What’s there to be uneasy about?”
“I mean...”
For a moment, Ning Bufan didn’t know how to explain it.
This unease wasn’t a fear of encountering danger. It was a deep-seated apprehension—a vague, lingering anxiety born from the bottom of his heart. It was the profound loneliness of having no destination...
Ning Bufan sighed. “Mister, do me a favor and pick a destination. Otherwise, I’m going to jump ship and leave right now.”
His terror of that pervasive loneliness had grown completely unmanageable.
Chen Changsheng fell into thought, and after a long while said, “We’ll head north, to the land of extreme cold.”
Ning Bufan blinked in confusion. “Where is that? Mangxue City?”
Chen Changsheng shook his head. “Even further.”
Ning Bufan considered this for a moment. “Mister, our Bamboo Raft won’t be able to make it that far.”
Chen Changsheng merely smiled and gestured for him to come closer.
Ning Bufan paused and leaned a little closer.
“This Chen will teach you a Divine Ability.”
Ning Bufan’s eyes lit up as he asked curiously, “What Divine Ability?”
Chen Changsheng replied, “As the poem goes, drunk, one forgets the sky lies in the water; a boatful of clear dreams weighs upon the Milky Way.”
“If a boat can be on water, why can’t it be among the stars and moon?”
Mister’s words tugged at his mind.
Ning Bufan murmured that line of poetry.
Inexplicably, a wave of drowsiness washed over him.
He let out a yawn.
His eyelids suddenly felt as heavy as a thousand jin, making it incredibly difficult to keep them open.
“Chen, Mis...”
In his dazed state, Ning Bufan could no longer resist the overwhelming urge to sleep. His body slumped over, and he fell sound asleep on the Bamboo Raft.
Within his dream, he beheld the Milky Way.
He punted the Bamboo Raft through the sea of stars, using the white clouds as water and the gentle breeze as his oars.
In the waking world, the Bamboo Raft lightly leapt from the river’s surface, soaring up toward the white clouds.
As Chen Changsheng watched the stars and moon gradually draw nearer, he let out a free and easy smile.
“Excellent comprehension.”
Chen Changsheng smiled. This way, he wouldn’t have to expend any of his own Magical Power.
How wonderful.
Ning Bufan slept deeply, completely lost in his dream, entirely unaware that the Bamboo Raft in the waking world had taken to the sky.
Much less that the stars and moon were right before his eyes.
Chen Changsheng fished out a piece of candied fruit from his sleeve and put it in his mouth.
As the sweet flavor spread across his tongue, mingling with a hint of tartness, it brought a pleasant lift to his mood.
The Bamboo Raft traveled in the sky.
The boundless expanse of stars streaked overhead, while ten thousand li of mountains and rivers flowed past beneath them.
The stars shifted and time flowed on.
An unknown amount of time passed before a touch of pale light crept over the horizon.
The fiery red morning sun began to rise, its brilliance slightly glaring.
Chen Changsheng narrowed his eyes slightly. With a raise of his hand, he drew in a wisp of the morning glow’s qi.
As it settled into his palm, it glowed a vibrant, fiery red.
A sudden flash of insight struck him.
As Mister closed his eyes, the morning sun’s qi on the horizon seemed to flourish even further.
Vaguely, another wisp of purple qi drifted over, manifesting the auspicious omen of purple qi coming from the east.
A crisp series of pops echoed from Mister’s five viscera, and a faint light began to radiate across his entire body.
“Crack...”
Faintly, it felt as though something had been shattered, only to be rebuilt anew.
His internal organs stirred, completely revitalized and made anew.
Chen Changsheng dazedly opened his eyes. “So that’s how it is... I see...”
For the first time in a long while, a faint look of excitement appeared on his face.
“So this is the true Five Qi Returning to Origin Method.”
Borrowing the qi between heaven and earth to temper the internal organs, treating one’s own body as the core pill and using heaven and earth as the furnace.
So that was how it worked.
