Su Junhan frowned slightly. He swept his sleeve, and a brilliant streak of light flashed out.
"Splash!"
The vast lake suddenly parted down the middle. The waters rolled back to either side, sending the fish scattering in panic. A watery path extended all the way from the shore to the tree at the Center of the Lake.
Following the path, a faint golden light glimmered beneath the tree.
Su Junhan paused in surprise before stepping forward.
Beneath a layer of silt, a radiant golden corner lay exposed.
With a sweep of his sleeve, the silt cleared away. A page radiating the golden light of Dao rhyme slowly floated up and landed in his hand.
Chen Changsheng tapped his toes lightly against the ground and leaped over to join him.
Su Junhan glanced at the page in his hand. The writing appeared chaotic—not because the text itself was jumbled, but because his cultivation realm was not yet high enough to decipher it.
Su Junhan handed the radiant page to Chen Changsheng.
Chen Changsheng took it. Upon seeing the writing, he froze in surprise.
To his eyes, the text was perfectly neat and orderly, completely lacking the chaos Su Junhan had perceived. What truly stunned Chen Changsheng, however, was the fact that he had seen this text long ago.
"It is the Scripture of Passing..."
Chen Changsheng muttered. He looked closer at the page in his hand. "This is one of my manuscript pages from years ago."
"The Scripture of Passing?" Su Junhan paused, slightly bewildered. "With such Dao rhyme, doesn't that mean this is the original text? Why would the original be here?"
Chen Changsheng lowered the page of the Scripture of Passing. He exhaled a breath and said, "This is not the original text."
This single page was merely an old manuscript. It did indeed contain the Scripture of Passing, but it was an incomplete version. Most likely, when the Scripture of Passing was finally perfected, it caused these ancient, fragmented copies to undergo a transformation as well, resulting in the golden Dao rhyme they possessed today.
Su Junhan only had a rudimentary understanding of the Scripture of Passing. Years ago, he had heard Mister and his elder sister mention it. In truth, however, he had no idea what the Scripture of Passing was actually used for, nor the true significance of its existence.
This naturally piqued his curiosity.
Chen Changsheng glanced at the Scripture of Passing again, then turned to look at Ning Bufan on the shore.
Ning Bufan was watching them from afar. He had not stepped forward; he simply did not want to get too close, terrified that he might suddenly black out again.
Su Junhan followed Mister's gaze. He paused slightly and said, "From the looks of it, is Young Friend Ning truly the reincarnation of some cultivator?"
Chen Changsheng shook his head. "This Chen has already probed his soul and Sea of Consciousness. It does not seem like it..."
Su Junhan blanked for a moment. "But then, how should we explain Young Friend Ning's sudden collapse just now?"
Chen Changsheng could not figure out the underlying cause either. He raised his head, glanced at the motionless lake water suspended around them, and said, "Let's return to the shore first."
The two of them leaped into the air and headed toward the shore.
Yet as that page of Dao rhyme drew closer to Ning Bufan, a profound sense of unease suddenly welled up in his heart. It felt like deep apprehension, or even outright fear!
He quickly turned and ran backward.
He retreated hundreds of meters away, yet even so, he remained on edge, like a mouse that had just run into a cat.
Ning Bufan clicked his tongue, his gaze fixed in their direction.
Chen Changsheng looked over from afar and asked, "Why are you running?"
Ning Bufan stammered, "I... I don't know..."
He had no idea what was wrong with him; he was simply terrified of the object in Chen Changsheng's hand.
Seeing this, Su Junhan frowned slightly.
If Young Friend Ning were truly a reincarnated cultivator, there was no reason for him to be this afraid of the Scripture of Passing. Showing a sense of closeness and curiosity would be the normal reaction.
Chen Changsheng raised an eyebrow and looked down at the page in his hand.
He held it up, aiming it toward Ning Bufan.
Ning Bufan's expression drastically changed, and he hurriedly turned his head away.
All of these reactions seemed driven entirely by pure instinct.
At this moment, the page in Chen Changsheng's hand acted like a demon-revealing mirror, forcing Ning Bufan to dodge away in terror. He did not even dare to let his gaze land on the paper.
"Mister Chen, hurry up and put that thing away! Put it away!"
Ning Bufan was pale and grim, repeating his plea in desperation.
Chen Changsheng pondered for a moment before slipping the page away into his sleeve. He applied several formations over it so that its aura would no longer affect Ning Bufan.
Once the page's aura had completely dissipated...
Ning Bufan finally breathed a sigh of relief. He walked out from behind a tree and slowly approached them.
Chen Changsheng frowned. "It is just a piece of paper. Even if it possesses some Dao rhyme, it is ultimately an inanimate object. Why are you so terrified of it?"
Ning Bufan recovered his wits, though he found it rather strange himself. "Mister Chen, I... I really have no idea," he said. "Just looking at that thing makes me feel... afraid. I just feel like I have to hide from it."
Su Junhan chuckled. "Could it be that Young Friend Ning is a demonic cultivator?"
It was true that demonic cultivators harbored a natural dread toward the Dao rhyme of heaven and earth.
Ning Bufan immediately retorted, "How is that possible? Senior Su, please do not joke around with me. With my whole body shining with Buddhist light, even demonic cultivators would have to run when they see me."
Su Junhan was only joking, but inwardly, he was exceedingly curious about Ning Bufan's intense reaction.
Words inscribed with such pure heavenly Dao rhyme normally made cultivators feel a sense of closeness—or even intense yearning. It was exceptionally rare to see someone react with sheer terror, let alone flee and hide from it.
Was it a problem with the heavenly Dao rhyme itself?
Or was it a problem with the text recorded on the page?
Su Junhan thought for a moment before taking out a manual of the fox clan's cultivation methods from his sleeve.
It, too, was wreathed in the golden light of Dao rhyme.
Yet when Su Junhan brought it out, Ning Bufan felt no fear whatsoever. He showed no reaction at all.
"You are fine with this one?" Su Junhan muttered.
Ning Bufan was just as puzzled. "I am not afraid of this one at all."
Su Junhan looked at Mister Chen. "It seems the issue does not lie with the heavenly Dao rhyme."
Chen Changsheng's gaze fell squarely upon Ning Bufan.
Faintly, he seemed to finally understand something.
The intensity of Mister Chen's stare made Ning Bufan squirm uncomfortably. He could not help but ask, "Why is Mister Chen looking at me like that?"
Chen Changsheng simply shook his head and offered no explanation.
He only said to Ning Bufan, "Go back and rest for now. Give This Chen some time to think it over."
Ning Bufan blinked in burning curiosity and asked, "Did Mister figure something out? Is there something wrong with me?"
Chen Changsheng smiled and said, "Do not overthink it. This Chen merely has a few suspicions, nothing more."
Seeing that Mister was unwilling to say more, Ning Bufan did not press the issue. After a moment's thought, he cupped his hands in farewell and took his leave.
On his way back, he continued to mull it over. Why had he felt such sheer terror when faced with that object? He could not make sense of it—he truly could not understand.
Once Ning Bufan had left...
...the shore of the lake fell completely silent.
Su Junhan turned to Mister Chen and asked, "What does Mister believe is truly wrong with Young Friend Ning?"
Chen Changsheng took out the manuscript of the Scripture of Passing and said, "What does the Fox Sovereign believe stands in opposition to the Scripture of Passing..."
Su Junhan paused for a moment. "The past?"
But he shook his head and argued, "I am afraid that is highly unlikely."
"This Chen thought the same at first, but then remembered an incident."
"What incident?"
"Many years ago, This Chen encountered a high master of the Buddhist Faction. Before we parted ways, he gifted This Chen a sutra and Dharma method. Its name was..."
"The Scripture of the Past."
