Su Junhan was utterly astonished. His gaze fell upon Mister Chen and lingered there for a long time.
When he finally looked away, he was deep in thought, yet he still found Mister Chen's speculation hard to believe.
Su Junhan shook his head. "Mister, I believe the river of time can only flow forward. The past is the past. How could it ever be changed?"
"Which is why he knows nothing now," Chen Changsheng said. "Ever since he was born, he has carried a Pre-Heaven trauma."
Su Junhan started to speak, then stopped. Finally, he asked, "If someone truly possessed such an ability, wouldn't that mean they stood above the river of time? To a being like that, the Heavenly Dao would mean nothing. But what could possibly drive them to do this?"
"Anyone who travels backward through time will surely be forsaken by both time and the Heavenly Dao," Chen Changsheng said. "Regardless of their goal, their end will be miserable. Perhaps when he first set foot on this path and arrived here, he already knew he wouldn't survive. Even with his soul cleaved in two, he still managed to draw out a single thread of life..."
Chen Changsheng paused, a smile surfacing on his face. "Of course, there is no need for the Fox Lord to be so tense. This Chen is merely guessing. I have no proof."
But Su Junhan had taken it seriously.
He felt the Mister's words made perfect sense.
Young Friend Ning's soul injury, his terror toward the Rebirth Scripture—how else could such bizarre circumstances be explained?
Chen Changsheng said no more on the subject. "Keep fishing. Our dinner for tonight still isn't settled."
Seeing this, Su Junhan didn't press the matter.
No matter what secrets Young Friend Ning was hiding, it was best to simply pretend he knew nothing, lest he get dragged into it.
The Mister likely thought the same; otherwise, he would have gotten to the bottom of it.
...
That night, they lit a fire by the lake.
Two fish had been roasted to perfection, giving off a mouthwatering fragrance.
Chen Changsheng grabbed one and bit right in, completely disregarding his image.
In contrast, Su Junhan ate with far more refinement.
After all, he still had to maintain some dignity in front of the Mister.
Su Junhan asked, "Mister traveled here from the Mortal World. What is the situation down there like nowadays?"
"Not bad," Chen Changsheng replied. "Currently, Yan, Jin, and the Imperial Court are locked in a three-way struggle. It might not be long before the world's qi destiny is unified."
Su Junhan nodded, falling into deep thought.
"Does the Yuanshan Fox Clan intend to get involved?" Chen Changsheng asked.
Su Junhan paused before saying, "I don't think it will benefit us older foxes much. But the Yuanshan Fox Clan has grown so large; we can't just let them hide away in a corner and idle their lives away. I previously sent Hu Yin down to the Mortal World to temper himself and scout things out. From the messages he has sent back, I truly believe this struggle over the Human Dao is an excellent opportunity for the younger generation."
Chen Changsheng nodded in agreement. "That isn't a bad idea. This Chen will speak plainly with you—this unification of qi destiny comes at the perfect time. If they can manage to be bestowed with an Investiture Scroll, it will be a guaranteed gain with absolutely no losses."
"Oh?" Su Junhan's interest was piqued.
"Moreover," Chen Changsheng continued, "an opportunity like this will likely only happen once in a very long time."
Su Junhan looked confused. "Only once?"
Chen Changsheng nodded. "The lands of the Mortal World are far inferior to the cultivation world. Why would they need so many celestial officials? They might as well appoint them all at once and close the doors forever."
Su Junhan fell silent.
To think even Mister Chen would say such a thing.
If that was the case, then the Yuanshan Fox Clan absolutely could not afford to miss out on the affairs of the Mortal World.
Seeing him lost in thought, Chen Changsheng added, "Actually, there is no need to expend too much effort. The Yuanshan Fox Clan is powerful, yes, but under the Human Dao's qi fortune, you will only be able to secure a single celestial official position at most. There won't be any more. If you have a promising junior in mind, you should prepare them early. This Chen senses that the day the qi destiny unifies is drawing very close."
Snapping back to reality, Su Junhan cupped his hands. "Many thanks for the reminder, Mister."
Chen Changsheng waved his hand dismissively.
He continued eating his fish, his gaze drifting toward the bright moon. He lost himself in thought for a moment, likely finding the moon exceptionally beautiful tonight.
Once they finished eating, the two returned to their respective quarters to rest.
When Chen Changsheng returned, he found Tao'er and Tong Zhihuan waiting for him. They had clearly been there for some time.
Tong Nianyi was already fast asleep in Tao'er's arms, her soft, even breathing brimming with vigorous vitality.
Only now did Chen Changsheng take a serious look at the couple.
He had to admit, both Tao'er and Tong Zhihuan had changed immensely.
Back when they were newly married, they had looked like a young boy and girl who had only just begun to understand the world. Now, they appeared to be in their forties or fifties. Their eyes were weathered by life, carrying far less hopeful anticipation, and their curiosity toward the world had steadily faded away.
Time inevitably changed a person. It was the same for everyone.
Chen Changsheng would change, and these young ones would change as well.
"Tao'er, take Nianyi into the room to rest first," Chen Changsheng said. "Be careful not to wake her."
Tao'er nodded. She carried Nianyi into the room, gently laid her on the bed, and tucked her in.
Tong Zhihuan had prepared some wine. "Mister has always liked Autumn Moon Brew," he said. "I made a special trip back to our hometown to fetch a jar."
Chen Changsheng blinked in surprise before letting out a hearty laugh.
Tong Zhihuan poured him a massive bowl.
He knew the Mister was a straightforward drinker who always did exactly as he pleased.
Tiny cups were never satisfying enough.
Chen Changsheng picked up the bowl, tilted his head back, and downed the wine in a single gulp. His Adam's apple bobbed as the Autumn Moon Brew trailed down from the corner of his mouth.
As the aged wine settled in his stomach, memories from years past surfaced.
Certain faces and figures flashed continuously through his mind.
But they lingered for only a fleeting moment before quietly fading away.
Chen Changsheng let out a long breath and asked, "Since you went all the way back, did you visit your elders?"
"Over these past few years, Tao'er and I have been constantly on the move, searching for a way to resolve Nianyi's predicament," Tong Zhihuan said softly. "We hadn't been back home in years. When I went back this time, the weeds in front of my parents' graves were so high I couldn't even see their tombstones. I cleared them all away, kowtowed deeply, and talked to them for a good long while before coming back here."
"That's good," Chen Changsheng said.
Tong Zhihuan poured him another bowl of wine.
"Now that Nianyi's condition has improved, Tao'er and I are planning to stop wandering the cultivation world," he said. "We're going to move back to our hometown and start a small business. What about you, Mister? What are your plans?"
Chen Changsheng paused. He thought for a long time before replying, "This Chen..."
"I think I will let some more time pass."
Before Tong Zhihuan could respond, Chen Changsheng changed the subject. "Starting a business is a fine idea. For a family to be safe and healthy, living peaceful and stable days... that is truly a great fortune."
Tong Zhihuan smiled warmly and raised his bowl of wine.
The two bowls clinked together.
In that simple collision, the unspoken bond between them seemed to carry a weight that words could never fully describe.
Chen Changsheng naturally understood that some things simply could not be forced.
He, too, needed to learn how to let go.
People always changed. The fearless, spirited Tong Zhihuan from all those years ago had completely grown up under the weight of time.
And he himself had truly become a Mister worthy of the young man's utmost respect.
