Perhaps feeling out of place or afraid of imposing on Mister, Tao'er and Tong Zhihuan stayed in Yuanshan for only two days before setting out for the Mortal World.
The couple offered their profound thanks and shared a meal and some wine with Mister before finally departing.
He watched the couple leave with Tong Nianyi.
Su Junhan then shifted his gaze to Mister Chen beside him.
For some reason, he felt that Mister Chen had been acting rather strangely over the past two days.
He was constantly hesitating to speak, lacking his usual easygoing nature, as if a barrier stood between his words, his actions, and the world.
"Are you uncomfortable, Mister?" he asked.
Chen Changsheng snapped out of his daze. "What?"
Realizing the man had been lost in thought, Su Junhan repeated, "You seem rather ill at ease these past two days, Mister."
Seeing Mister smile without speaking, Su Junhan felt he understood.
It was likely because Mister disliked such rigid formalities.
.
.
Ning Bufan lay beneath a green pine tree in the mountains, dangling his leg.
Dappled sunlight fell over him, neither too cold nor too hot. It was incredibly comfortable.
Mister Chen was acting very strangely today.
He had offered to treat him to wine, brought over a jug, and simply sat down beside him before leaning back to lie on the ground.
Just like Ning Bufan, he crossed his legs and stared idly at the sky through the gaps in the pine needles, bathed in that same dappled light.
Mister remained silent. Ning Bufan didn't presume to study the man's expression, keeping his own gaze fixed upward.
"In the mood to relax today, Mister Chen?"
Ning Bufan asked.
"Yes," Chen Changsheng replied. "I was just curious how you manage to spend so much time idling away in Yuanshan all by yourself."
Ning Bufan sat up. "Catching fish in the river, hunting birds in the mountains—it's all fun."
Chen Changsheng cast a sideways glance at him. He sized him up—a young man in his late twenties, nearing thirty, yet looking closer to forty. After a pause, he said, "This Chen found those things quite enjoyable in his youth, and I still find them enjoyable now. Yet, I also harbor this vague feeling that they are no longer things This Chen should be doing."
Ning Bufan blinked. "What are you talking about, Mister Chen? A man is a boy until the day he dies. What's there that you shouldn't or wouldn't dare to do?"
Chen Changsheng chuckled. "You have a point."
Ning Bufan stood up and stretched lazily. He glanced back at Mister, shaking his head as he remarked, "You don't live transparently enough, Mister."
Chen Changsheng stared blankly for a moment before letting out a laugh. "And what insights might Brother Ning have?"
Ning Bufan let out a sigh. "You and I are very different, Mister. I've been an orphan since I was little, living on the streets as a beggar. I'd beg for a bite to eat here, a copper coin there. Just surviving was hard enough. Having gone through all that, I figure there isn't a single hurdle in life that can't be crossed. We live just to live. As long as you aren't dead, everything's fine."
His tone shifted, and he lowered his head, propping it up with his hands. "Honestly, I actually envy you, Mister. I'm not trying to brag about how much I suffered, as if going through hardships makes me amazing. The truth is, suffering is just suffering. It didn't actually make me stronger; it only warped my understanding of what 'good' is. That's why I envy you. You can live a proper life, holding your head high as a respectable person, unlike me. People always look at me like I'm a beggar—or worse, like I'm up to no good."
Chen Changsheng nodded. Ning Bufan was right; the logic was sound.
Yet, he added, "Some people might look like respectable, upstanding figures, but deep down, they're worse than dog shit."
Ning Bufan froze, clearly caught off guard hearing such vulgarity from Mister Chen's mouth.
It felt incredibly jarring.
Mister had always given him the impression of a kind, elderly gentleman, the sort who only ever spoke proper and polite words. This, however, was a stark contrast.
Ning Bufan opened his mouth, hesitating to speak.
But Mister interrupted his train of thought with a single remark.
Chen Changsheng smiled. "What is it?"
Ning Bufan snapped out of his daze. "Ah, I just didn't expect you to talk like that, Mister."
"What's wrong with it?" Chen Changsheng chuckled.
Ning Bufan sat back down. "So, what exactly has you so conflicted, Mister?"
"This Chen is not conflicted," Chen Changsheng replied. "Rather, I am stubbornly burying myself in it. My mortal emotions and desires are gradually fading. Perhaps one day, they will vanish completely, leaving me indifferent and unable to clearly see this world for what it is. That is why I am lying here. I don't want to just move past it."
Understanding dawned on Ning Bufan. He smacked his lips together and said, "That sounds pretty miserable, Mister Chen."
"Not quite as miserable as you," Chen Changsheng replied.
Ning Bufan curled his lip. "You really do have an awkward personality, Mister Chen. You couldn't resist taking a jab at me, could you?"
Chen Changsheng took a sip of wine and smiled. "Curse away. Curse all you want."
Seeing Mister Chen like this, Ning Bufan couldn't help but mutter to himself.
He had a feeling.
'There is definitely something wrong with Mister Chen.'
Who on earth wouldn't care when they were being insulted?
After polishing off several jugs of wine, Mister became dead drunk.
He didn't say a word, simply lying there in perfect stillness. He wasn't asleep; his mind was just drifting through memories of the past, leaving him in silent contemplation.
Ning Bufan let out a long breath. He was quite drunk himself. Sprawled out on the ground, he felt as if he were suspended between dreams and reality. He reveled in the dizzy, hazy sensation—it allowed him a brief reprieve from his pain.
"Hehe..."
Ning Bufan let out a senseless chuckle and turned his head to look at Mister, only to find Chen Changsheng looking completely and utterly at peace.
He suddenly found it a little terrifying.
Was this Mister always like this when he was drunk?
...
Mister fell into a deep slumber there in the forest.
Ning Bufan, who had also passed out from the wine, suddenly jolted awake.
He blinked in a daze and looked around.
"Huh?!"
He watched as the surrounding trees suddenly began to grow at a frantic pace. The spiritual essence of the vegetation surged violently, and the fish in the nearby stream danced with joy, leaping out of the water one after another.
Deer and wild beasts alike drew near, approaching the area as though making a holy pilgrimage.
"What's going on?!"
Ning Bufan sobered up in an instant.
Meanwhile, deep within Yuanshan, Su Junhan suddenly sensed the disturbance. He leapt lightly into the air, casting his gaze toward the distant forest.
He watched as the spiritual essence of all the vegetation in Yuanshan trembled violently. This sudden phenomenon captivated every living spirit in the mountains, causing them all to look up in awe.
The spirit foxes of Yuanshan sensed it as well, all of them turning to look.
"Could some great serendipity have appeared?"
"Let's go take a look!"
Su Junhan furrowed his brows. He turned his head just in time to see a figure flying over. The newcomer bowed their head and cupped their fists. "Greetings, Fox Lord."
"What is the cause of this phenomenon?" Su Junhan asked.
"To answer the Fox Lord," the figure replied, "this phenomenon began when Mister Chen fell into a drunken slumber."
Realization dawned on Su Junhan. Seeing the wood essence energy practically overflowing from the forest, he was gripped by a profound sense of shock.
"Turning a dream into reality?"
"Is this a Divine Ability? Or the natural Dao?"
Su Junhan couldn't figure it out, but he was immensely shaken all the same.
A spring breeze from within the dream brought a shower of rain to Yuanshan.
The originally withered vegetation glowed with new life, and water surged through the dry creek beds. Startled by the surge of spiritual energy, the wild beasts and plants in the mountain gained enlightenment, awakening their intelligence and rousing their spirits.
A single dream had brought forth a myriad of changes.
Ning Bufan stared blankly at the scene. He watched the vacancy in a deer's eyes give way to human-like intelligence before the animal stepped forward, bent its legs, and bowed three times to the sleeping Mister.
Plants and wild beasts alike bowed toward the Mister.
Mister Chen had transformed the mountain, infusing it with vibrant life.
Ning Bufan exhaled slowly and muttered, "These are the true abilities of an immortal. One dream, one creation... What kind of mighty figure is he..."
.
.
When the Mister woke, he found the mountain forest much more lush and verdant.
Many wild beasts and demons had gathered around the area.
Their gazes were earnest. Some held fruits, while others carried freshly caught prey in their mouths, placing the offerings on the ground not far from Chen Changsheng.
Chen Changsheng offered a warm smile at the sight, feeling a sudden moment of realization.
Ning Bufan stood up. "Mister, you caused quite a commotion just by taking a nap. All of Yuanshan was alarmed."
"It was an accident," Chen Changsheng said. "I saw a bit too much in my dream. Who knew the illusions would manifest into reality on the outside."
Ning Bufan sighed in relief. It had been exhausting, standing guard here in fear and trepidation for so long.
Chen Changsheng paused for a moment. "This Chen needs to make a trip to Tianji Mountain next. I'll have to trouble you to take me there."
"Huh?" Ning Bufan froze. "What?"
He was bewildered. Had the Mister just said he wanted to trouble him?
Chen Changsheng smiled. "If you won't go, This Chen can go alone."
Ning Bufan snapped back to his senses and hastily said, "I'll go, of course I'll go! I'm definitely going!"
He was absolutely going to help with this favor!
When such a formidable person asked for his help, he would scramble to oblige.
But...
How were they supposed to get there?
Ning Bufan was troubled again. He vaguely recalled the Fox Lord mentioning that Tianji Mountain was an unknown, vast distance away. With his meager abilities, he probably couldn't carry the Mister there.
He hesitated, wanting to speak yet holding back, but then he saw the Mister looking at him with an amused expression. Before Ning Bufan could react, Chen Changsheng raised a hand and knocked him unconscious.
"When falsehood becomes truth, truth also becomes falsehood. Riding the clouds and treading the mist in a dream, truth within falsehood, falsehood within truth. The Bamboo Raft turns to cloud and mist, traveling thousands of miles in an instant..."
Chen Changsheng smiled, then grabbed Ning Bufan and stepped onto the Bamboo Raft they had arrived on.
As the dream stirred, the Bamboo Raft shot straight into the clouds.
"This Chen takes his leave."
The voice fell upon Su Junhan's ears.
A smile played at the corners of Su Junhan's mouth; the Mister was truly a free spirit.
Coming and going exactly as he pleased.
How many people in this world possessed such ability?
To be so uninhibited, living a life of such carefree ease.
...
Green Mountain rested within the clouds and mist, sitting close to the sky. It looked like a breathtakingly beautiful woman half-hiding her face.
The chimes of spiritual bells rippled outward, and immortal melodies lingered in the air. Veiled in white mist, the mountain was abundant with an immortal aura.
Tianji Mountain had existed in the world for a long time, outlasting countless Daoist immortal mountains.
Yet now, a Bamboo Raft could be seen riding the clouds and mist straight toward it.
The Tianji Mountain disciples patrolling through the immortal mist were immediately startled at the sight.
An immortal crane flew up to meet it.
"May I ask who has come..."
Before the Tianji Mountain disciple could finish his sentence, the Bamboo Raft swept past him. In the blink of an eye, it vanished without a trace, plunging into the immortal mountain.
The disciple froze for a moment. Once he realized what had happened, he hastily shook his bell and shouted, "Quick, quick! Someone is breaking through the mountain gate!"
"Clang, clang—"
Before long, the disciples patrolling the vicinity gathered and chased after the Bamboo Raft.
Ahead of it, other cultivators were already waiting, intending to block its path.
On the Bamboo Raft, Chen Changsheng smacked his lips at the sight and said, "This isn't good."
He looked at the sleeping Ning Bufan and hurriedly waved a hand.
"Wake up."
In an instant, the Divine Abilities on the Bamboo Raft dissipated.
As Ning Bufan's dream shattered, the Bamboo Raft lost its power and plummeted toward the immortal mountain.
As soon as Ning Bufan woke up, he felt himself falling once again.
"Ahhhhh!"
Screams erupted from his mouth once more.
The disciples blocking them head-on were startled by the commotion.
"Scatter, scatter!"
A path immediately opened up as the Bamboo Raft carried the two men straight toward the mountain gate.
Just as they were about to crash, Chen Changsheng applied a Daoist technique.
The Bamboo Raft abruptly stopped in midair.
The two landed smoothly, but Ning Bufan was already dizzy from the turbulent ride. As soon as he touched the ground, he sprawled out to the side and threw up.
"Blegh—"
His face was pale, and he retched violently.
Ultimately, he lacked Mister Chen's composure. After spinning an unknown number of times in the sky before falling, anyone else would have completely lost their bearings as well.
The disciples in the sky descended one after another, and dozens of immortal cranes completely surrounded them.
"Cultivator, where do you hail from?! How dare you trespass on my Tianji Mountain?!"
A Daoist cultivator sat atop one of the immortal cranes, his expression severe. A sharp gleam shone in his eyes, carrying a heavy sense of oppression.
Chen Changsheng paused, then cupped his hands. "This Chen briefly lost control of the Bamboo Raft. I did not intend to trespass on your mountain. I have come this time to ask a favor. I wonder, has Mister Zhong returned to Tianji Mountain?"
The leading disciple frowned slightly. After thinking for a moment, he descended to the ground.
He first cupped his hands, then asked, "May I ask for Fellow Daoist's title?"
Chen Changsheng replied, "This Chen has no title, only the courtesy name Changsheng."
The disciple before him froze, as if suddenly remembering something.
He paused and said, "Elder Zhong is not in the mountain."
Chen Changsheng paused and asked, "Then, is Elder Chen here?"
"Please wait a moment, Mister. I will go inform him."
Seeing that the disciple was so accommodating, Chen Changsheng breathed a sigh of relief.
In truth, it was only after hearing the name 'Chen Changsheng' that the disciple took the matter so seriously. If it really was this Mister, then it wasn't surprising. It wasn't his first time breaking into the mountain, after all.
Elder Zhong had previously given them orders not to block this Mister, but since his identity hadn't been confirmed upon arrival, the disciple still had to ask a few questions just to be sure.
Before long, Chen Daoqiu personally came out to welcome him.
"Ah, Mister Chen's arrival brings brilliant light to our humble immortal mountain!"
Chen Changsheng stepped forward and cupped his hands. "Greetings, Elder Chen."
Chen Daoqiu returned the gesture and said, "Mister is too polite. Please, follow me into the mountain."
He paused. "Eh? And who is this little friend?"
Ning Bufan, having finally recovered, said, "Greetings, Immortal Chief. I am Ning Bufan. I came with Mister Chen."
"Good, good. Please come in, hurry."
Chen Daoqiu led the two of them into the immortal mountain.
Immortal tea and spiritual fruits were all provided in full, and the etiquette was exceptionally thorough.
Ning Bufan couldn't help but marvel at how good Mister Chen's connections were. Even the elder of such an immortal mountain was perfectly polite, and Ning Bufan was benefiting by association.
He had to admit, the spiritual fruits were truly delicious.
"Greetings, Mister Chen."
Xiao Dongxu smiled and cupped his hands to the Mister.
Chen Changsheng looked at him and said, "The young priest's elegance remains the same as ever."
Xiao Dongxu spoke humbly, "Mister flatters this little Daoist. This little Daoist is useless and gets punished every day."
