Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 990: Hoping It's an Illusion

In just a single day, urgent dispatches from the Border Pass arrived in rapid succession.

The situation brooked no delay.

Even Zhao Wuji betrayed a hint of panic.

Meanwhile, his so-called trusted aides had already issued written orders: a portion of the army was to remain at the Border Pass to resist the Northern Desert forces, while the rest were to prepare to march straight upon Shangjing at any moment to intervene and contest the mandate of heaven.

Zhao Wuji only learned of it an hour later, by which time the orders issued in the name of the Prince of Yan had already been dispatched.

He slammed the table in fury and rebuked them, "With such treachery, how could the Grand Ancestor's heroic spirit ever rest in peace beneath the Nine Springs!"

His angry shout echoed through the main hall.

The gathered men shuddered inwardly and exchanged hurried glances. Yet, each harboring his own dark motives, everyone remained utterly silent.

Zhao Wuji swayed slightly. He drew a deep breath and said, "I disdain to associate with the likes of you..."

But then a voice rang out.

"Your Highness, you cannot go anywhere right now."

Zhao Wuji's steps faltered, and he looked back.

He found the gazes of several men in the hall pinned directly on him.

Those burning stares were nothing short of a threat.

Leading them was none other than the Grand Ancestor's most trusted minister from years past, who was now glaring at him with eyes as cold as ice.

Hearing this, Zhao Wuji froze in a daze. His eyes met those of the dozens of men present, yet he could not find a single word to say.

He knew that their minds had long since become twisted.

They no longer bore any resemblance to the esteemed ministers of the past.

One person stepped forward, dropping to his knees to say, "Your Highness must become the Son of Heaven and restore our Great Xiang!"

Zhao Wuji's eyes turned cold as he swept his gaze over everyone before him.

In truth, these people had left him no way out.

Before his eyes, the grim future seemed to unfold: defeat at the Border Pass, the Northern Desert invading, the realm carved apart just as before, and within days, a colossal power akin to West Xiao rising from the dust.

When that time came, a ferocious storm would sweep across the entire realm.

Zhao Wuji snapped out of his daze and said, "Fight this northern war yourselves. I am going to the Border Pass."

He flicked his sleeve and walked away without another word.

The crowd exchanged glances, silently shaking their heads.

"Too petty and small-minded..."

"Sigh..."

"Such actions are truly unwise."

As the crowd murmured among themselves, Zhao Gongzuo stood quietly within the throng, turning something over in his mind.

Why did that position have to belong to Zhao Wuji?

Because he had once been the Crown Prince!

He carried the true bloodline of the Grand Ancestor.

Back then, most in the imperial court had long since submitted to Yan Ruchu. Only their faction had remained to rise up in resistance. Their loyalty lay with the Grand Ancestor, Zhao Zhen, which was why the Great Yan faction existed today—giving them the strength to contest the realm and restore Great Xiang, for none but the Xiang people.

The gathering had no choice but to place Zhao Wuji under temporary custody.

If anything went awry, everything that followed would become impossible to manage.

They needed to revive that past glory—not merely for the Grand Ancestor, but for themselves. The imperial court belonged to them.

Yet they had grossly underestimated Zhao Wuji.

Having bided his time here for so many years, how could he be caught completely unprepared?

That very night.

Under the blockade and encirclement of over four thousand soldiers and horses from the Yan cavalry camp...

...a black wind abruptly swept through, throwing the troops into instant chaos. By the time everyone regained their senses, Zhao Wuji, who was supposed to be trapped in the manor, was nowhere to be found.

The alarm was quickly raised, and nearly ten thousand men searched the surrounding lands all the way until the crack of dawn, but they still could not find any trace of Zhao Wuji.

Only then did panic finally seize them.

Amidst a few sighs, they finally understood that he was dead set on going to the Border Pass.

Someone rebuked angrily, "I knew it! The man is indecisive and full of a woman's benevolence! If it were otherwise, why would he have faked his death and fled back then?!"

"Say no more..."

"Let's handle the matter at hand first."

"Colleagues, we have schemed and planned for so long; surely none of us wish to be left without proper titles in the future. Zhao Wuji cannot die at the Border Pass, and we cannot miss out on the plan to march north. Let us think of a solution first."

The incident had occurred so suddenly that no one expected Zhao Wuji to act with such resolve, leaving that very night. At the same time, they realized that he definitely still possessed hidden methods—a glaring oversight on their part.

Chen Changsheng yawned as he woke up.

This slumber had been just as long as usual, leaving him looking a bit groggy.

Manyue sat nearby reading a book, its contents having been read by her who knew how many times.

"You're awake?"

Chen Changsheng paused. After gathering his wits, he nodded.

He then heard Manyue say, "The Mortal World hasn't been very peaceful lately."

Chen Changsheng paused again and asked, "How is it not peaceful?"

Manyue replied, "Killing intent fills the air, and the aura of death is abundant. It seems things are drawing to a close."

Understanding dawned on Chen Changsheng, but then he shook his head and said, "It's still early."

Manyue glanced at him and said, "Even extraordinary individuals have joined the war. I'm afraid it's not early at all."

Chen Changsheng said, "The urgent matter right now should be recovering Magical Power."

Manyue thought for a moment before saying, "At your current pace, I'm afraid you won't make it in time."

Chen Changsheng let out a light sigh and said, "If that doesn't work, I'll figure out another path. Even if I have to borrow it, I will get it."

Manyue exhaled softly and said, "The way you are right now, you don't look like someone who has everything prepared."

Chen Changsheng said, "I'm a bit flustered, but there's no helping it. If I miss this opportunity, who knows how long it will take for the next one to arrive."

Chen Changsheng transformed the Red Beans into tiny figures, repeating his previous method, and left them in Nanyuan to practice Cultivation.

Meanwhile, he himself made a trip into the Demon Domain and brought out the Black Pagoda.

"Oho, Master Chen. You're a rare visitor."

The Black Pagoda sounded a bit obnoxious, likely because it hadn't spoken in so long.

Chen Changsheng looked toward the Demon Sword. By now, there wasn't much demonic energy left in it.

Chen Changsheng said, "Come out with me."

The Black Pagoda let out what sounded like a long sigh of relief and said, "Finally, I can get out for a bit."

Chen Changsheng summoned the Black Pagoda into the palm of his hand.

Just as he was about to leave, Chen Changsheng faintly sensed a slight disturbance.

"Hmm?"

He frowned slightly and looked in a certain direction.

But when he looked over, nothing seemed amiss.

This left Chen Changsheng feeling a bit perplexed. He immediately stepped toward that area, glancing left and right, but he still didn't discover any anomalies.

The Black Pagoda asked, "What are you looking for?"

Chen Changsheng said, "Someone was here, just a moment ago."

The Black Pagoda paused, then retorted, "If you ask me, you're just getting old and your eyes are playing tricks on you."

"I'm not mistaken."

Chen Changsheng wandered around the Demon Domain, but he never found any strange traces.

He exited the Demon Domain, immediately sought out Manyue, and informed her of the matter.

As the Heavenly Dao of this Demon Realm Underworld, Manyue was also somewhat startled when Chen Changsheng mentioned this.

She had not detected anyone entering the Demon Domain.

"Could it really be your illusion?"

Hearing this, Chen Changsheng stopped dwelling on it. He, too, hoped that it was merely an illusion.
