"This Chen will go find Lihua first and ask a few questions," Chen Changsheng said. "However, you are currently heavily injured and steeped in demonic energy, making it inconvenient for you to travel. How about I find you a place to rest and recuperate for now? We can talk once your injuries improve."
"I'll leave everything to your arrangements, Mister."
Chen Changsheng nodded and immediately brought Mo Yu to Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain.
He explained the origins of the matter to the sect master.
After learning the truth, the sect master felt somewhat relieved, but he still harbored a lingering distaste for Mo Yu. Even though the man wasn't entirely to blame, disciples of Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain had ultimately died by his hands.
It wasn't that the sect master was being petty; it was merely human nature.
Mo Yu would temporarily recuperate at Xuanjiu Immortal Mountain. Chen Changsheng also cast a spell to conceal the demonic energy on Mo Yu's body, allowing him to stay there quietly to heal his injuries and purge the lingering corruption.
Instructions delivered, Chen Changsheng departed for the Mortal World.
Along the way, he used a paper avatar to relay the matter to Miss Manyue.
Chen Changsheng naturally understood what she meant and said no more.
The Mortal World was currently engulfed in war.
Strife was everywhere.
Chen Changsheng first made a trip to the Fiend Blood Path to find Ping'an.
Ping'an was astonished to see him, staring in a daze for a long time before finally calling out for Uncle Chen.
Chen Changsheng offered a few comforting words before sitting down to talk.
"Is Lihua here?" Chen Changsheng asked.
Ping'an shook his head. "Lihua left with my older sister years ago. She's been sending letters back ever since, but the last one arrived two months ago. According to that letter, my sister should have been at the Border Pass, but now... it's hard to say."
Chen Changsheng nodded in understanding.
The two chatted for a while longer. Chen Changsheng planned to make a trip to the Border Pass later anyway.
From their idle chatter, he learned that the current North-South Martial Alliance was divided in its loyalties.
Although the alliance had initially been established merely to secure a peaceful haven for martial artists, the ambitions of some members had since begun to shift.
This was largely due to their current might. Almost half of the world's jianghu was under the alliance's control. A faction of nearly twenty thousand martial artists would make anyone fearful, and flourishing power bred ambition.
Two factions had emerged within the ranks, with Ping'an presiding in the center to keep both sides in check. He had managed to stabilize things in the short term, but the world was now in chaos. The underlying tensions ran deep, reaching a point where they could no longer be suppressed.
"Being an alliance leader is much harder than being an official..." Ping'an sighed. "Honestly, your nephew still admires the late emperor. He could play the court's most important ministers in circles. His strategic mind was truly peerless."
It wasn't an exaggeration. One would be hard-pressed to find another emperor in all of history who played with schemes the way Yan Ruchu had. Even in death, he couldn't rest in peace.
"Then what are your plans now?" Chen Changsheng asked.
"The North-South Martial Alliance has changed," Ping'an said. "The people below sing our praises in the name of jianghu chivalry, and countless others revere us. The alliance has practically become a religious sect. That's how we were able to grow so quickly, but it also provides an extra layer of protection. The difference between zealots and ordinary martial artists is that it's very difficult to make believers accept a change in leadership. Because of that, I can still steer things from the inside for now."
"The main issue is..."
Ping'an sighed. "The person I'm waiting for still hasn't arrived. Or rather, I can't tell which one is him."
Chen Changsheng paused for a moment. "Actually, it isn't just you. This Chen has also been thinking that the war has already reached its final stages, yet that suitable person has still not appeared."
Ping'an was stunned. "Mister doesn't know either...?" he murmured.
Chen Changsheng nodded.
Yan Ruchu had schemed so much, all for the sake of restoring the Great Jing dynasty under the House of Yan. But even now, amidst all these struggles, no one had emerged to carry the banner.
If that person didn't show up soon, this war would be completely over!
Ping'an sighed, nursing a headache over the whole affair.
He was truly caught in a dilemma.
"Given the current situation within the alliance, it will probably be impossible to avoid getting involved," Chen Changsheng said. "No matter what, you must act carefully. This is different from the struggles in the Imperial Court. The court preaches reason on the surface while committing atrocities in the dark, but in a bloody struggle for the world like this, no one will reason with you, neither in the open nor in the shadows."
Ping'an nodded. "I will remember Uncle Chen's teachings."
Chen Changsheng sighed softly. "It's not that I want to preach, but you and Ruyi grew up under This Chen's watch. Naturally, I don't want anything to happen to either of you."
Ping'an recalled the past with a wave of nostalgia. Looking at his uncle, he gave an earnest nod.
His uncle didn't stay long at the martial alliance. He had come in a hurry, and he left in a hurry.
Just before he departed, Ping'an added, "Uncle Chen, if you find Ruyi, could you persuade her to come back?"
He paused, then shook his head. "Actually, forget it. It's better if she doesn't come back. At least, not to me. But I do hope she won't wander around the Border Pass anymore; it really isn't safe there."
Chen Changsheng agreed to look out for her, and Ping'an breathed a sigh of relief as he watched Mister leave.
Inside one of the North-South Martial Alliance's buildings.
The Blind Man's ears twitched slightly, as if he had recognized a familiar voice.
But he didn't step forward, nor did he beg for anything.
He knew his fate in this life was already sealed. The sliver of stubborn reluctance left in his bones kept him standing there in feigned indifference, merely to preserve his own pride.
A short distance away, Chen Changsheng looked back toward the window of that building.
The Blind Man's body stiffened. He turned his face in the direction of the gaze he felt resting upon him.
The Mister smiled slightly. Unfortunately, the Blind Man couldn't see it at all.
Chen Changsheng didn't make things difficult for him. He had no desire to teach the Blind Man a lesson; he was merely a little surprised by the reaction.
Today, the Blind Man was like a stray dog without a home, clinging to his microscopic dignity and barking softly to flaunt a pride that only seemed ridiculous.
It was a pity. Some things, once done wrong, could not be undone. Having fallen into this river, he shouldn't even dream of climbing back out.
Chen Changsheng traveled a great distance to reach the Border Pass.
As he drew near, he saw just how fierce the battles at the Border Pass truly were.
Countless men fought to the death to hold off the enemy. Soldiers fell one after another, their fresh blood dyeing the entire city wall crimson.
"Loose the arrows! Loose the arrows!"
"Damn it! Archers, where are the archers?!"
"Are you all completely fucking useless?!"
The soldiers left holding the watchtower were all old, weak, sick, or disabled. The trained archers had been wiped out long ago. Now, there were barely any men left who could even draw a bow.
They had been abandoned. Their final orders were to defend this place to the death. Their superiors promised that reinforcements were on the way, but in reality, no such help was coming.
The high-ranking officials of Dayan had already made their decision.
Rather than waste their strength struggling against the North Desert People now, it was better to wait until they secured the throne, and then turn back to deal with the invaders later.
