Countless corpses lay below the city wall.
Bodies littered the ramparts. Only a few heavily wounded soldiers still had a breath of life left in them, while the rest had simply been worked to death defending the wall.
Only now did they finally realize.
There were no reinforcements coming.
But it didn't matter anymore. Their turbulent lives had reached their end, leaving only memories flashing fleetingly before their eyes.
"Rumble..."
The city gates were pushed open, inch by inch.
A horde of Northern Desert soldiers wielding long sabers prepared to enter the city.
The widening gap of light illuminated the dark gatehouse, casting a ray over a woman gripping a long spear.
The Northern Desert soldiers furrowed their brows.
Their leader, mounted on a blood-red horse, raised his hand.
"Kill!"
The Northern Desert soldiers charged forward.
The long spear swept out with tremendous force, slashing precisely across the throats of the vanguard. Sprays of blood burst into the air, and seven or eight men collapsed instantly.
Meanwhile, on the city streets behind the woman...
A figure touched down. Mister Qingshan watched the woman slaughtering enemies within the gatehouse; his gaze paused, but he did not intervene.
Lihua guarded Ruyi's back against sneak attacks from all sides. The person and cat coordinated flawlessly, striking with the exact momentum Ruyi had once spoken of: one warrior guards the pass, and ten thousand cannot breach it!
But Ruyi was ultimately just a martial artist, and her strength was not infinite. Beneath the gatehouse, corpses piled up like a carpet, and she was already drenched in her enemies' blood.
Ruyi panted heavily. She knew she had never been one to follow the rules, which was exactly why she was standing here today, holding the pass alone!
Sometimes, she wondered what this Northwest border pass actually had to do with her.
In truth, having lived through so many dynastic upheavals, Ruyi still didn't understand the true meaning of nation and home. But she was a person of the jianghu. This jianghu made her feel that life was interesting and meaningful. Yet as time passed and circumstances changed, she had long lost her initial innocence.
Once upon a time, the moment she took her first step out of Qingshan City, she had looked toward the future and asked herself...
What is the jianghu?
In her ignorant youth, she had told herself she would become a great hero.
Not just a heroine, but a great hero. She had always been this unruly, overturning the natural order, but that was where she found her meaning.
And so she stood here today.
Not for some so-called nation, but simply for a promise she had made in her naive youth.
She finally seemed to understand the man who had collapsed outside the wine tavern.
Perhaps, just like her, he had been thinking of the past.
"Come on!"
The long spear swept horizontally, sending blood flying.
A seemingly frail young woman armed with a spear, accompanied by a cat, guarded this solitary city gate.
Blocking the thousands upon thousands of soldiers outside!
Another figure appeared on the street.
Du Aniang's gaze paused, settling on Mister Qingshan as he sat by the roadside.
She slowly walked forward and stopped beside him.
"Senior."
Chen Changsheng looked back, seemingly snapping out of a daze, and said, "She's always so reckless. Thank you for looking after this girl recently."
Du Aniang smiled warmly and said, "Senior is too polite."
True to her word, Ruyi used a single spear to hold back the men outside the gate.
Countless fell dead or wounded beneath her long spear.
Ruyi hadn't bothered to keep count, but she figured there had to be nearly a hundred by now.
This was her limit. She had only managed this thanks to the advantageous terrain; out in the open, she could never have killed so many.
"Lihua, Lihua..."
Ruyi gasped for breath and said, "Remember to get me out of here in a moment."
She wasn't actually stupid enough to throw her life away; she always left herself a way out.
Anyway, every extra kill was a bonus!
Lihua shot her a helpless look. Ruyi was always like this, doing these outrageous things and then expecting it to clean up the mess.
"Okay."
Lihua replied.
Completely free of worries now, Ruyi charged forward with everything she had left!
The long spear stirred up a tempest beneath the gatehouse.
Ruyi held on for another fifteen minutes. By now, her arms were trembling; she was on the verge of total exhaustion.
Seeing her condition, Lihua understood.
Immediately, an aura of thunder and lightning swirled up around its body.
"Strike!"
As the word fell, a bolt of lightning materialized out of thin air.
In an instant, it blasted back all the advancing Northern Desert soldiers.
"Let's go, let's go!"
Lihua urged.
Ruyi let out a breath of relief, then stepped back and fled into the city.
Just at that moment, a voice rang out.
"Shamanic Art of Layered Mountains: I summon the Heavenly Shaman's Net!"
"Manifest!"
Suddenly, a piece of sheepskin drifted forward.
In the blink of an eye, it transformed into a massive net that plummeted toward Ruyi and Lihua.
Lihua froze.
It watched helplessly, realizing they were about to be caught by the rapidly expanding net.
"Run!" Lihua cried in alarm.
But right then, a gentle breeze swept past.
The great sheepskin net was simply blown away by that gust of wind.
"Huh?" Lihua paused in surprise.
Ruyi also froze, but then she felt herself being lifted off the ground.
And Lihua was scooped into someone's arms.
They soared into the air.
Ruyi looked back, only to see a familiar face enter her vision.
"Uncle Chen!" Ruyi cried out in pleasant surprise.
Chen Changsheng reached out and rapped her on the head. "Foolishness!"
Ruyi just giggled, looking completely unbothered.
Du Aniang held Lihua, and soon, their figures vanished from the city gates entirely.
Meanwhile, when the horde of Northern Desert soldiers charged into the city, they found their path blocked by that same giant net, and confusion quickly set in.
"High Priest!"
A figure stepped out from the crowd, approaching the blood-red horse. He cupped his hands and said, "My King, there is a shaman cultivator in the city. With my meager abilities, I fear I am no match."
The man on the blood-red horse coldly snorted and said, "You should have struck sooner!"
The High Priest shook his head slightly and replied, "These lands and rivers are protected by a celestial official. I must abide by the rules."
The Northern Desert general was highly displeased, but he didn't say anything more.
However, that woman had left a profound impression on the Northern Desert general's mind.
A single person had wiped out nearly a hundred of his warriors. If she ever fell into his hands, even death by a thousand cuts would not be enough.
"Enter the city!"
.
.
Inside the tavern.
Ruyi lay slumped in a chair, looking rather disheveled and covered in blood.
She had suffered a few minor injuries, the most obvious being a slash on her shoulder from a Northern Desert soldier.
Fortunately, Du Aniang was no ordinary person. Before long, those wounds were soothed, and in the blink of an eye, they began to scab over.
Lihua hid off to the side, staying far away, likely out of fear of getting scolded.
Chen Changsheng looked at her calmly and said, "If Du Aniang and I hadn't been there, you really might have died today. And you're still in the mood to smile like a fool?"
Ruyi hurriedly dropped her smile and said, "I was wrong. There won't be a next time, I promise..."
Seeing her act so utterly unrepentant, Du Aniang couldn't help but shake her head with a smile. "You girl, how will you ever give us adults any peace of mind?"
Ruyi smiled but didn't say anything.
She only knew that she was happy, because Uncle Chen had come.
