Immortal Travel of Longevity

Chapter 999: Splitting Memories

"It was quite strange. That woman appeared out of nowhere, and the two of them started fighting after barely exchanging a few words. I originally thought it was just a normal spar, but they fought more and more ruthlessly until his physical body was suppressed. The rest of us suffered an undeserved calamity and were suppressed right alongside him."

"Anyway, the whole thing was baffling."

"So," Chen Changsheng said, "the two of them actually knew each other."

The woman Lihua had mentioned was presumably Yu Xuan.

"They probably did," Mao'er said. "I couldn't say for sure."

Chen Changsheng nodded. Then he asked, "When you all escaped the spirit cage, did you happen to see where his suppressed corpse ended up? Especially the head—why has This Chen never seen it?"

"He didn't have a head."

"That woman chopped his head off separately," Mao'er said. "I have no idea where she put it."

"Oh?" Chen Changsheng was mildly taken aback by this news.

Chen Changsheng pondered this, feeling somewhat puzzled.

Why would Yu Xuan chop his head off separately?

And where would she have hidden it?

Mao'er didn't know either, but in truth, it already knew enough.

"We can discuss that later," Chen Changsheng said. "Returning to the main subject, is your relationship with Mo Yu really as you described before? Mo Yu was forced into it, and you were too?"

Mao'er paused. "Not exactly. Mo Yu didn't make everything clear back then—probably because he was afraid you might attack. I had actually suffered grievous injuries, and Mo Yu only pleaded with that demon to save me. It was my fault."

"What kind of injuries would require a demon to save you?"

"A demonic entity known as the Nine-Petal Demon Lotus was born between Heaven and Earth back then. At the time, Mo Yu was still a Mountain-Guarding Elder of an immortal sect. He was dispatched to retrieve the demon lotus to prevent it from falling into the hands of demonic cultivators. I tagged along with him, accompanied by many experts from the immortal sects. To our surprise, that man appeared in person—the Demon-Summoning Divine Lord. Mo Yu and the group of cultivators fought the demon, but who could have expected him to take on everyone by himself? He did it effortlessly. Our side quickly began to lose ground. Seeing that the demon was about to get his hands on the lotus, the blood rushed to my head, and I ate the Nine-Petal Demon Lotus right then and there."

"You ate it?" Chen Changsheng was momentarily stunned.

Mao'er nodded and said, "Because I ruined his plans, the demon left in a fit of anger, which spared us from further conflict. I was actually pretty surprised he didn't just kill us."

"But things changed after we went back."

"The elders of several immortal sects gathered together. They believed it was only a matter of time before the demon lotus influenced me and turned me into a demonic creature, so they decided to execute me!"

"When Mo Yu found out, he took me and fled the Immortal Mountain. We were hunted every step of the way. The Cultivation World had no place for us anymore. Around that time, the demon lotus started affecting me. My mind grew hazy, and I would constantly spout incredibly hostile things. I started hunting wild beasts and birds, chewing them up raw. Several times when Mo Yu found me, my face was completely covered in blood."

Hearing this, Chen Changsheng roughly grasped the situation. "As the demonic energy affected you more and more, it eventually spiraled out of control. So Mo Yu took you to find the Demon-Summoning Divine Lord, and in the end, Mo Yu became one of his subordinates?"

"Yeah..." Mao'er lowered its head. "Honestly, if those people hadn't been so ruthless, none of this would have ever happened."

"Was the issue with the demon lotus resolved in the end?"

"Not completely."

Mao'er opened its mouth and said, "That demon lotus was incredibly unique. As the only demonic earthly treasure to appear in several millennia, it possessed extreme malevolence. By the time we went to him, it was already too late. The demon lotus had fully occupied my Sea of Consciousness and physical body. If it was extracted, I would die too, so it could only be suppressed."

"He placed a Restrictive Seal within my body and Sea of Consciousness, suppressing it with seventy-two runes. That finally eased things a little. But that demon lotus wasn't something to take lightly. It would occasionally generate demonic energy to influence me, forcing me to split my focus to deal with it, which made my movements sluggish. So, I simply separated a portion of my divine sense so my main self could focus entirely on suppressing the demon lotus. That's what caused the amnesia. But before I could merge my memories back together, we were suppressed within the spirit cage."

"You split your divine sense?" Chen Changsheng asked.

Mao'er shook its head. "What are you thinking? I didn't want to die. I only split my memories."

"I see." Chen Changsheng understood now.

Mao'er's gaze fell on the sleeping Lihua. It opened its mouth and muttered, "Who knew it would turn out so stupid."

Chen Changsheng couldn't help but laugh. "Aren't you just insulting yourself?"

Mao'er grunted twice and didn't say anything more.

"Don't you think it's quite nice?" Chen Changsheng asked.

Hearing this, Mao'er paused, offering no rebuttal.

"Perhaps that's also why you rarely make an appearance," Chen Changsheng said.

"I just have my hands full," Mao'er said.

It would probably only show itself when Lihua's life was in danger.

"This Chen still has a question, however," Chen Changsheng said. "You mentioned the demon lotus earlier, but why hasn't This Chen ever sensed it on Lihua?"

"There's not much of it left," Mao'er explained. "Thanks to that woman. Back then, she brought out a tower that sucked away most of the demon lotus's demonic energy. When we got out, we were struck by a Heavenly Tribulation, leaving barely any of the demonic energy intact. Of the nine petals, only half a petal remains today. I hid it away in my Sea of Consciousness and constantly wear down its energy. It's completely normal that you can't sense it."

"From the sound of it, in a little while, you'll be able to come out fully?"

"Pretty much," Mao'er said.

Chen Changsheng thought for a moment before asking, "What if Lihua isn't willing?"

Mao'er paused. This was indeed a major problem.

"Sometimes I regret splitting my memories back then," Mao'er said. "If not for that sudden suppression, things wouldn't have turned out like this."

At the time, it had only planned for it to be a temporary measure. It never expected so much time to pass, to the point where that blank slate of memory gradually grew into a real, flesh-and-blood Lihua.

Splitting memories was like a watered-down version of splitting one's divine sense, and it inherently came with drawbacks. The prerequisite was strictly controlling the timeframe—merging it back into the main body before that blank memory could fully mature. It had never imagined things would end up like this.

Now, it couldn't bring itself to do it.

Even though Mao'er had later followed the Demon-Summoning Divine Lord, it still harbored kindness in its heart. That was why it repeatedly found itself unable to make a ruthless decision regarding Lihua.

"Lihua is pure," Chen Changsheng said. "Perhaps if you just talked it out, the two of you could become friends. It has nothing but kindness in its heart; it wouldn't do anything to you."

"You think so..."

Mao'er, on the other hand, lacked that confidence.
