Chapter 19: Chapter 19: Cassie’s Secret
"Do you need anything?" Cassie asked Derrick who was lying in his bed, covered in bandages.
When she had first come back home, seeing him sleeping on the bed, covered in injuries, startled her.
Rebecca told her everything that had happened, but she asked him again once he woke up just in case he had lied to their mother.
Upon learning what Kenny West had done to him, an emotion Derrick had not seen before flashed in her eyes.
Anger.
It was the first time he had seen her angry and ready to charge after the boy who had almost killed her twin brother.
Only after Derrick calmed her down did she stop her. He also realized how deeply she cared about him or the boy who used to be her brother.
Ever since then she has even been trying to help him with every little thing. She had not even changed out of her school uniform yet.
"Just a glass of water." Derrick did not want to trouble Cassie, but whenever he refused her help, she would sit down and start to get lost in deep thoughts.
He had no idea what she was thinking about, but he assumed it was nothing healthy. So he let her be distracted.
As she walked out of the room, he turned his attention back to the huge glass screen on his lap. It was his computer, which could almost be turned into a laptop or a tablet based on the requirements.
Even with his author’s page opened before him, Derrick was not looking at it. His attention was all focused on the rewards listed for completing his mission.
’Accept them!’
With a mental command, he accepted them all.
And then... it happened. All at once!
Derrick could not even think because an influx of memories appeared in his mind. The entire life of the young man named Derrick Crowne was now being force-fed to him.
His head snapped back as flashes of memories appeared in his vision. He did not seem to be under any mental strain because the memories were already there; he was just seeing them from the perspective of an audience watching a movie.
By the time it finished, he tried to take a breath, but the system was not done. The information about his second ability of his innate skill appeared in his mind.
The first skill was called The Eye Of The Author. The skill allowed him to see the world differently from what normal people saw.
He saw flickers of emotions on someone’s face before they appeared. He noticed the way they spoke, acted, and behaved in front of him.
This was a passive skill that allowed him to read people more deeply than they allowed.
And now...
He had obtained a sub-skill of this very ability.
[All Seeing Eye.]
An active-type ability.
"Huff!" Once the memories and information faded into background, Derrick took breath for the first time. He did not even realize he had stopped breathing for 5 minutes. But it had felt like he had been staying in the same spot for days now.
Derrick gasped for breath and clutched his throat, which felt parched now.
The first thought that appeared in his head was not about how he should take deep breaths or if he had suffered any damage or to check the ten pills that had suddenly appeared in a newly unlocked inventory tab on the System. But instead his first thoughts were...
’I wonder what this ability can do.’
Ignoring the throbbing pain all over his body, he instinctively activated the technique. It was like he knew what to do before he even did it.
Suddenly all the pain within his senses vanished. Colors faded from his vision; everything seemed to have slowed down.
He could see a fly flapping its wings in the corner of the room. He could see Cassandra’s backpack sitting on the corner of the chair where she had hurriedly dropped it before rushing to him.
He could see how it swayed under the faint current of wind in the air.
’It will fall.’ He could somehow tell that before the bag even reached the point of falling. His eyes turned towards the wall of the room. ’Where is Cassandra? she should be back already.’
Then something even more shocking happened. The thick, enforced wall of the house thinned away, and he could see the sight beyond the wall.
Cassandra was standing in the kitchen staring at the wall before her with a lost look on her face. The glass full of water was lying in the sink, and the tap had already closed itself to prevent water from overflowing.
’I should call her—’
Thud!
Just as the thought appeared in his mind, a loud noise echoed in the room. Derrick snapped his head to the side and realized that Cassie’s back had fallen.
Suddenly, his vision returned to normal, and he felt a new tingling sensation in his eyes. Derrick realized he could only use the ability for around 10 seconds.
Once it deactivates, it goes into a cooldown mode. Now he can only use this ability again in an hour.
But his attention was not on the skill anymore.
Derrick was looking at the fallen bag and the contents that had spilled out of it with a blank expression on his face.
"What happened?" Hearing the loud noise, Cassie had snapped out of her daze and came rushing back. When she saw the bag on the ground along with her things spilled out, her expression froze.
She hurriedly moved to pick the thing up, but Derrick’s hoarse yet sharp voice made her freeze halfway.
"Where did you get that?"
Even though she tried her best to show no emotions on her face. Derrick could see it all. The guilt, the hesitation, and the panic.
"Do you think you are the only one who has been saving his money?" She tried to sound casual, finally moving again.
"Why do you have that pill, Cassie?" Derrick stared directly at the small black Physical Enhancement Drug inside a glass container that she was clutching in her hands.
"I—" She stammered at first, but after taking a deep breath, she finally said, "I bought this pill for myself."
