Chapter 20: Chapter 20: Claiming The Rewards
"I have been thinking." Now that it was out in the open, Cassandra did not hide anything. "Ever since you have been in the—ever since that man tried to kill you and you lost your memories, I have realized that without power and money, we are never really safe."
"We live like we are always safe, so because today nothing bad happened to us, every day would be the same. The illusion of safety, it’s horrifying."
"After what happened to you, I thought about taking pills to join the guild and become a hunter."
Derrick sighed, "We talked about thi—"
"Please don’t interrupt me." Cassie coldly shut him down and brought the chair to his bed and took a seat on it before continuing. "I know what we talked about, and I agree. But that still does not mean I cannot take the pill and get stronger."
"I don’t want to join any guild or become a hunter; I just want to gain enough power so I can protect the three of us."
Cassandra continued to explain that she had thoroughly thought about her decision and she was not going to back down.
Hearing her decision, Derrick’s thoughts went to the ten pills sitting in his system before he said, "Fine. If that’s what you want, I can agree. But tell me something: have you checked the purity index of your body?"
"We did in the school. Although I am nowhere near you, 87 percent. My body is 69 percent free of the impurities. My teachers even advised me to apply for the Guild Academy for further studies, but I told them I wanted to continue my business studies for now." She snorted before crossing her arms and leaning back into the chair.
Now that she had revealed everything to him, she finally looked like she had gone back to her normal self.
Derrick chuckled dryly before asking her, "Can you please not take that pill?"
A frown appeared on Cassie’s face, but she did not speak immediately. Instead, she kept glaring at him, waiting for him to finish his words.
"I don’t want to stop you from becoming stronger, but I also don’t want you to take just any pills. The pills you find normally in the market only have a purity level of around 40-50 percent. Even the special ones you find at premium events are around 60% at max. I don’t want to take such low-level pills, which can induce side effects on your body."
"Isn’t it fine as long as I take an injection of the Deep Cleansing Serum once I break through to the Physical Strengthening Realm? Directly injecting it in my bone marrow can help me remove those impurities."
Derrick naturally knew about this, but he still shook his head. "Not to mention each injection is priced at around 100,000 for the basic one. Even if you get the money to buy one, it will still not be able to remove the impurities deeply imbedded in your bones and muscles."
"How come you are suddenly a master on these topics? I thought you hated reading." Cassandra smirked but did not deny his claims.
"I do now." Derrick shrugged. "I will get you some better pills later. Just return this one and get something better for yourself."
Casandra nodded before lowering her head. Her eyes fell on his PC. "How’s your novel coming along? I am still waiting for new Chapters; I can only imagine what other readers must feel like."
"It’s coming along nice—cough!" He tried to speak, but the dryness in his throat made him cough. Cassandra finally realized that she had forgotten the glass of water in the kitchen and rushed to get it.
Only after he drank it did Derrick feel like he was finally alive.
"Ah, I will write some Chapters before going to sleep. What do you plan to do?"
Cassandra looked at him with displeasure, but she knew he would not rest until he wrote those Chapters. "I will go help Mother see if she needs something. Then maybe complete my assignments before dinner. Are you sure you don’t need anything?"
"You should go. I will be fine; I have everything I need."
"Fine, just call me if you need anything." Cassandra picked up her phone. Carefully placed her bag on her bed before finally leaving Derrick alone.
"Should I eat a pill right away?" Derrick turned his attention to the inventory, where he saw the image of the pill, and thought deeply.
After some thought, he uploaded the 3 Chapters he had in stock first before turning his attention back to the system.
[Mission 1: Investigate the death of the original host. Status: Complete.]
[Reward 1: Memories of original Derrick, Along with a message.]
[Reward 2: 10, 100% Pure, Unranked Physical Enhancement Drugs.]
[Reward 3: Unlock The Second Ability Of Innate Skill—Author’s POV.]
[Reward 4: Unlock The Shop Tab.]
Out of all the rewards, he had already checked two of them. The message original Derrick had left was still fresh in his mind.
The pills were in his inventory, and then there was the Shop.
Derrick clicked on the shop function, and a shopping platform appeared before his eyes.
It was not 2D.
3D, holographic images of each item appeared before him.
[Physical Enhancement Drug]
[Purity Level: 100%]
[Price: 20,000 SC]
His eyes went wide the moment he looked at the first item.
A single pure Physical Enhancement Drug was as costly as 20 pills that were sold in the market, but after thinking about it, he realized that it made sense.
From the knowledge that came from the years of writing novels and researching and the information on pills, something as precious as this pill being sold for twenty thousand Social Credits seemed fair and even cheap.
Derrick turned his attention to the other items. It appeared like that pills were not the only thing that was being sold in the shop.
[Ordinary Sword]
[Description: A sturdy steel sword. It cannot slay the nightmare beasts, but it can still sever the head of a Physical Strengthening Realm human if you put enough force behind the attack.
[Price: 10,000 SC]
There were other weapons with around the same price. He scrolled down and found an auxiliary drug that could temporarily boost body stats.
[Agile Feet Serum]
[Description: inject directly in your legs, and you can run twice the top speed of your capabilities for 10 minutes. But once the effects wear off, your legs will go numb and powerless.
[Price: 30,000 SC]
[Blood Boiling Patch]
[Description: Stick it on the back of your neck, and you will slowly lose consciousness in exchange for gaining a temporary boost to your strength. You will be unstoppable for 30 minutes.]
[Price: 80,000 SC]
There were even some skill manuals that he could learn instantly upon purchasing, but their prices were ten times the last item he had seen.
Derrick also came across something interesting.
[Basics of Alchemy]
[Pill Creating Method]
[Fire Control Manual]
The three items came as a bundle, but he could not see the price of it. Not only that, they were even blacked out.
He tried to click on it, but a warning popped up.
[Note: The host is not capable of learning these skills. Please break through to the enhanced being realm to proceed further.]
He stared at the warning for a while before sighing and closing the window.
"Guess I should do what I can for now." He opened the inventory and pulled out one of the pills stored in there.
Woosh!
The system responded to his will, and a round-shaped object popped out of thin air and fell in his hands.
Derrick raised the pill before his eyes and inspected it...
