Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Powerful Bodyguards

The moment he turned around the corner on the road, Derrick slipped into an empty alley and shoved the alchemy Cauldron he had purchased into the system inventory.

He looked around once more, and only after he had confirmed that no one was following him, he walked out.

Stepping out, he noticed people walking out of the market and blended into the ground.

After buying something so expensive that half of his savings were gone, Derrick decided to return home.

But when he took the first turn and separated from the crowd, he noticed two shadows following him.

’Who are they? Someone from the West family? Are they here to finish what they had started? No, the basic explanation would be this has to do something with that young woman from the market.’

Derrick decided that he had to get a look at the faces of the people who were following him.

A little down the road, he noticed a convex mirror hanging on the pole.

’Just a little more, and I will be able to get a look at their faces.’ Derrick slowly increased his pace and delicately stayed under the street light.

When he was only a meter away from the mirror, he could see his reflection in the mirror and the people following.

They were... an old couple.

A couple of steps behind him, an old man and woman were walking hand in hand.

Derrick let out a breath he did not even realize he had been holding.

’I am being paranoid for no reason.’ Letting out a self-deprecating laugh, he turned around, thinking that the recent events had traumatized him to overthink every simple situation.

But the smile on his face vanished when he fully looked back and saw no one on the road.

’What?!!!’ His mind went black and his heart shuddered in fear.

Where did the old couple go?!

That thought screamed in his head. No matter where he looked, he saw no turn for them to take, and he would have heard a gate opening and closing if they were even fast enough to run one of the houses around them.

While Derrick’s mind stopped working, he felt a chilling presence behind him.

"Derrick Crowne. You are quite interesting; no wonder the higher-ups sent me." Hearing the lazy voice, the terrified Derrick snapped his head back and saw a middle-aged man walking towards him.

The man was a mess.

His hair was untidy; even the suit he was wearing looked oversized, disorderly, and crumpled.

A faint trail of smoke dispersed into the air from the cigarette that he was holding between his lips.

"To think you noticed them trailing you, that too without any proper training." When he said those words, Derrick’s eyes finally fell on the thing the man was holding in his hands.

They were the unconscious bodyguards he saw accompanying the woman who had tried to take the cauldron from him.

They were not dead, just unconscious. But seeing their bloody and bruised state, even Derrick felt a trace of pity.

Compared to this, what Kenny had done to him was just a deep tissue massage.

With his all-seeing eye, he could tell how their bones had been broken cleanly. Their injuries went deeper than just simple surface wounds.

Even if they were treated by special doctors with healing talent, they would need weeks before they were back to their peak self.

’Just how long had he been following me?’ Derrick stared at the harmless-looking man ahead of him with wariness.

" Jade family is truly wealthy, aren’t they? To hire some enhanced stage military fighters just to protect a little girl who is not even the heir of the family."

Derrick’s eyes went wide when he heard those words coming out of the man’s mouth.

When the bodies of the humans who had taken enough Physical Enhancement Drugs reach the peak of their development, they take the enhanced pill and break through the limits of their mortal shell.

Once they reach this stage, they can house special energy known as Enhanced Energy within their bodies to enforce themselves and increase the power of their attacks.

If what the man had said was true, then they were capable of separating his head from his neck with a simple slap. They don’t even have to use that Enhanced Energy of theirs.

’If they are that powerful, then... what about the man who defeated them singlehandedly without so much as a cut on his face?’ That only raised the level of alertness in Derrick’s head regarding the man.

Seeing the boy before him raising his guard, the man took a deep puff of the smoke, making the cigarette burn faster. He raised his hand and tossed the unconscious bodyguards at Derrick’s feet. "Is this how you thank your saviour?"

"Had it not been for me, you would have been the one lying here, and that sweet little artifact of yours would have been in their hands."

The man suddenly took a step forward and vanished from Derrick’s sight, startling him.

"Aren’t you curious about me? Who was that old couple about? What happened to them? You must have so many questions. Allow me to answer each and every one of them over some..." Derrick heard the voice coming from behind him and turned around. Halfway through his movement, the scene around him changed. He was no longer standing but sitting in a comfortable chair, and he was no longer in the same empty neighbourhood but in a very simple yet elegant-looking restaurant. "Sweets."

Derrick looked ahead and saw the same man he had met a while ago, looking at him with an amused smile.

The cigarette from his face was gone, replaced by a spoon full of cream and berries.

"Sugar is an even better high than smoking, I tell ya~"

Derrick could not help but stare at the man who was sitting before him. The same man who had knocked down some of the powerful men he had ever seen without even any effort and was now enjoying a gigantic ice cream sundae like an innocent child.

’Wait... didn’t he say something about the cauldron? That means he saw me buying it. Does that also mean?’ His mind went blank the moment that small possibility even arose in his head.

As if seeing the doubts and fear on his face, the man smirked innocently and said, "Oh, by the way. You have some insane talent related to space. The way you made that cauldron disappear, I did not even sense any changes in the space. As expected of a talent who scored 80 percent on the Body Purity Index."
