Chapter 38: Chapter 38: Blood And Iron

Derrick walked out into the garden behind the house.

The grass was a little wet from earlier rain. It felt cold against his bare feet but he it did not matter to him. In fact Derrick loved walking on wet grass.

He rolled his shoulders once. Twice.

Then he moved.

He started with a basic punch to the tree which he had padded with thick mats before.

Even though he had done the same thing for years, it no longer felt the same as before. His punches felt sharper and stronger than before.

’Huh.’

He tried again. Faster this time.

He could feel that his whole body was engaging in that simple punch.

No matter how he tried, the results were the same. It was like his body already knew exactly where he wanted it to go before his brain even finished the thought.

He kept going.

Punch. Step. Turn. Punch again.

Sweat built up on his forehead within minutes, dripping down the side of his face, but he didn’t stop to wipe it off.

His body kept moving.

Derrick had stopped throwing just punches and started kicking the tree as well.

His leg swung up higher than he expected, foot slicing through the air with a sharp whoosh, and he nearly toppled over from the momentum.

He caught himself just in time and planted his foot back down. With a grunt he tried again and this time he struck the tree.

The power behind each kick and punch shook the whole tree making the leaves fall on the ground.

He climbed on the tree using nothing but his feet and properly adjusting the momentum.

From the brand he jumped and landed on a split without hurting himself.

Derrick’s movement kept correcting itself in tiny ways he couldn’t even explain, like some invisible hand nudging his feet half an inch to the correct side whenever he almost landed it incorrectly.

’This is insane.’

The sun dipped lower behind the rooftops and shadows stretched long across the grass. But Derrick barely noticed it at all.

He didn’t feel tired the way he used to.

His muscles burned a little, sure, but his mind was somewhere else.

Locked in.

Focused on nothing but the next move, and the one after that, and the one after that. He did not even realize when someone passed by the front gate of his house, watching him move like a monkey.

A while later.

The front gate creaked at some point. The sound of footsteps grinding on the gravel path echoed.

It was Cassandra. She had finally come back from her academy.

Cassie stepped into the garden, school bag still slung over one shoulder, and stopped dead in her tracks.

She stared ahead like she had accidentally entered the wrong house.

Derrick had started fighting an illusionary enemy. It was none other than Kenny West. But since Kenny was too weak for the current him, he gave him some abilities to match his own.

Cassie’s eyebrows pulled together.

She opened her mouth like she wanted to ask something, then closed it again.

Shook her head slightly and kept walking toward the house instead. After one last glance over her shoulder she disappeared through the door.

Derrick didn’t notice any of it.

He was too deep in it, his eyes were burning with passion as he dodged an illusionary fist that brushed past his face.

His body was starting to feel less like something he had to control and more like something that just did what he wanted, no delay, no second-guessing.

Then, finally—

[Objective Complete!]

[Basic Body Coordination Technique — Mastered to Beginner Level.]

[Reward: 5 Divine Strength Pills — Stored In The Inventory.]

Derrick froze mid-motion, one leg still raised in the air. In his moment of distraction, an illusionary sword swept through his neck.

But nothing happened.

Derrick slowly lowered his leg, chest heaving, sweat dripping off his chin onto the grass below.

"...Already?" He wiped his forehead with the back of his hand. "That was fast."

He glanced down at his hands. Flexed his fingers once again.

’How long will it take me to write a Chapter again?’ Derrick was happy to learn that he would not accidentally break the bath tub he had just installed.

"Truly. Everything is pay to win." Derrick sighed as he realized that he would not have possibly passed this mission so easily if he did not have the money on hand.

"I need to make money. I am burning money faster than I am making it." Shaking his head, he walked inside and picked up a towel and went upstairs.

The door to the bathroom did not open as he had expected.

Derrick knew it was not Rebecca since she was working in the room next door with her door open.

He knocked on the door and asked, "Is that you Cassie? What are you doing?"

"...Yeah." Cassie replied from the inside after a second of pause.

"Okay, I will come back later." Without waiting for a response, Derrick turned around and left.

Behind him, the bathroom door opened and Cassie peeked out, her short blond hair swaying as she tilted her head.

Seeing Derrick was already gone, she puffed her cheeks and closed the door, "...maybe next time."

Derrick returned to his room and wiped his sweat with a towel and changed his clothes. Throwing the sweaty ones in the laundry chute connected to his room.

"Did the missions refresh?"
