Chapter 40: Chapter 40: Instructor Chen
[Main Mission, Part One: First Sale — Complete!]
[Reward 1: Power Of Alchemy — Claimed.]
[Reward 2: Cauldron Bond (Tier 1) — Awaiting to Be Claimed.]
[Reward 3: Coding Skill (Advanced) — Claimed.]
Derrick closed his eyes and accepted the rewards, one by one. Knowledge poured into his skull in dense waves, alchemy formulas and coding syntax.
Everything popped in his head like it had always been there, and he was a master at them.
But when it came to the cauldron bond, he hesitated.
’What if something happens? What if it drains me or reacts weirdly? Since Cassie is here as well, I should do this in some abandoned plot or something.’
He didn’t know what forming a bond with an ancient artifact actually looked like.
For all he knew, it could knock him out cold, or worse.
He didn’t want Cassie or Rebecca seeing him suddenly collapsing on the ground before panicking and calling an ambulance over something the system probably had completely under control.
’Better safe than sorry. I’ll claim it when I’m alone. No witnesses, no worry.’
He left that reward sitting untouched in his notification tab and spent the rest of the night sorting through everything else in his head.
Soon, the next day arrived, and by the time the sun rose again, Derrick was already out of the house.
...
He arrived at The Train Hoe (even the r was not glowing anymore) a little before noon.
After he let the scanners at the gate scan him, he walked in.
The receptionist at the front desk lit up the moment she spotted him, leaning forward on her elbows with a smile clearly meant to be noticed.
"Morning, Derrick~" she said, her voice sweet enough to give someone a toothache. "New workout plan today?"
"Morning." He offered a polite nod and kept walking, without waiting to give her an opening.
She pouted faintly at his back but didn’t push it.
Derrick made his way straight to the locker room, pulling one of the remaining pills from his inventory once he was alone.
He popped it into his mouth and let it melt.
The same bitter, metallic taste hit his tongue exactly as expected, and a familiar warmth began spreading through his body a second later.
He waited it out in silence, leaning against the lockers with his eyes closed and arms crossed, until the sensation finally faded into a low, comfortable hum beneath his skin.
Derrick adjusted his vest and lower before he stepped back out into the hallway, his mind already wandering toward how many Chapters he wanted to knock out once he got home.
Just then he noticed someone had stepped directly into his path, blocking the hallway entirely.
Derrick raised his head, eyes landing first on a pair of neat black sneakers.
There she was.
Leaning against the wall with her arms crossed. The woman was so beautiful that she even surpassed the most beautiful actress in his last life.
She looked to be in her late twenties, with sharp cheekbones, violet-streaked black hair pulled back into a tight ponytail, and dark brown eyes sweeping over him with amusement and clear interest.
"You’re the one who broke my machine’s record a few days ago," she finally broke the silence, seeing Derrick had no intention of speaking first.
There was no trace of anger in her voice. "Not only are you at the Late Stage of the Physical Strengthening Realm at such a young age, but you’ve got power beyond the average person even at that stage."
"I had to restore the backup myself because someone, and I have a very good guess who, deleted your file before I even got a look at it." A faint, knowing smirk tugged at her lips. "If I hadn’t done that, I might never have found out how deeply you are hiding yourself."
"That punch of yours from the last time was mediocre at best, so the power you displayed was mostly your pure physical strength."
Derrick kept his expression calm on the surface, but internally, he groaned.
Another stalker? Just my luck.
"Relax." She pushed off the wall, closing a few feet of distance between them. "You’ve done nothing wrong, so you’ve got nothing to be nervous about."
The line everyone with dubious intentions ever said. Derrick thought to himself.
"I am the owner of this gym. I built half of that diagnostic room myself."
"I wanted to talk to you because I’m interested in you."
Derrick’s eyes twitched.
"You’re my type too," he said dryly, "but I think we should start as friends."
"Oh. So that’s how you want to play? I like that." Her smirk widened as she stepped in closer, effectively backing him against the wall.
Without any shame or worry about the dozen onlookers who were now staring at them, she started patting and pressing his muscles. "You’ve got a good body too."
"I have read your file too. Don’t look at me like I am some crazy stalker; I just got curious. I learned about the academy drama, the 80% impurity-free physique, and all of it." She stopped circling and faced him directly. "You’ve got talent and dedication. What you lack is proper training."
"And you want to be the one to give it to me?" Derrick blinked, genuinely thrown. How does a gym owner even get her hands on someone’s personal file like that?
Either she had connections, or she wasn’t what she appeared to be.
Maybe both.
"Why?" he asked flatly. There was no free food in this world, and he wanted to know her angle. Nobody offered to teach a stranger for nothing. "I don’t even know you. I don’t know what you’re capable of teaching, and I don’t even know your name."
The woman seemed pleased by how quickly he caught on, her smile deepening. She pulled out her phone, flicked through a few screens, then turned it toward him.
"You can call me Instructor Chen."
An ID card glowed on the screen. Keira Chen.
Derrick’s eyes moved from the phone to her face. She had Asian features, which was odd, considering this wasn’t even the same world, but he let it go.
The credentials on the ID weren’t small time. They marked her as an instructor at Golden Dawn Academy.
The very academy he’d once tried and failed to get a scholarship into.
"What a coincidence." Derrick let out a dry laugh. "Shouldn’t you be at the school, teaching?"
The smile on her face faltered for half a second. She coughed lightly, slipping right back into character. "I’m on leave. Vacation. I can go back whenever I want."
"As for the reason behind my offer..."
