The walk back to his apartment passed in a blur Jason didn’t fully register, streetlights sliding by overhead, the cold air doing nothing to touch the one word still sitting lodged somewhere behind his ribs.

Convenient.

He let himself in, locked the door out of habit rather than intention, and didn’t bother with the lights this time, just crossed the dark living room and dropped onto the couch, the same couch, the same blanket still half-folded from last night, and sat there in the quiet for a long moment before he even took his jacket off.

She’s been calling me that for weeks. He turned the thought over slowly, examining it from every angle the way he examined everything, except this one didn’t organize itself into neat, manageable facts the way last night’s spiral had.

This one just sat there, heavy and unresolved, refusing to sort itself into anything useful.

Not someone she wanted. Just someone who happened to be around. Easy. Available. Low-cost.

He thought back over the last few months, every text he’d answered within minutes because he didn’t want to seem uninterested, every plan he’d rearranged, every small inconvenience he’d absorbed without complaint because complaining might have made him seem like less of a sure thing.

And the whole time, that’s exactly what I was being valued as. A sure thing. Not someone worth choosing. Just someone worth keeping around because I never made it difficult.

[Reward 3: Unlocked.]

The notification blinked into existence in the dark, and Jason stared at it for a second without any of his usual reflexive commentary, no sarcasm ready, no argument loaded. He just looked at it, and then, almost mechanically, tapped to open it.

[Calculating Reward...]

He read it twice, and something in his chest loosened slightly, not all the way, but enough to notice the difference, like someone had reached in and turned a dial down from unbearable to merely uncomfortable.

Another reward where I’ll have to sleep and wake up before I know what it is

He didn’t really care about the system’s reward currently. He just didn’t have enough room for it

He was still sitting there, jacket half off one shoulder, when a knock sounded at his door.

Jason went still.

Ben, maybe. Marcus, checking in.

He glanced at the clock, and then, before he’d even fully processed the thought, something in his chest recognized the specific rhythm of the knock, quick, a little hesitant, nothing like the easy, careless knuckle-raps his friends usually gave.

He crossed the room slowly, pulled the door open, and found Sarah standing there, jacket pulled tight against the cold, hair slightly windblown like she’d walked fast to get here, and for a second neither of them said anything at all.

"Hey," she said finally, quiet.

"Hey." His voice came out rougher than he expected. "Thought you needed time."

"I did." She shifted slightly, hands buried in her jacket pockets. "Then I heard what happened at the party, and time felt like the wrong priority."

She was there.

Jason blinked, processing that slowly. "You were at Amanda’s thing?"

"For about an hour. Long enough to hear Priya bragging about cornering you."

Something hardened slightly in her expression, the same bossy, unflinching energy she’d carried into his kitchen the night before, except aimed at something entirely different now.

"So I said something to her. In front of everyone."

"You didn’t have to do that."

"I know I didn’t have to. I wanted to." She held his gaze steadily. "Someone repeats a word Amanda’s apparently been throwing around behind your back like it’s some kind of settled fact about you, in front of a room full of people, and just expects nobody to push back? No. Not happening in front of me."

Jason felt something shift in his chest, warmer than anything the system’s rewards had managed tonight, something that had nothing to do with notifications or percentages. "You defended me."

"Obviously I defended you." She said it plainly, like it wasn’t even a question worth asking.

"You’re not convenient, Jason. You showed up tonight even though you clearly didn’t want to be there. You washed dishes with me without complaining, mostly, and let me bully you into it without holding it over me. You listened when I couldn’t explain myself last night and didn’t push. That’s not convenient. That’s just, actually, a decent person, which apparently is rarer than it should be."

He didn’t have an immediate response to that, standing there in his own doorway, the cold night air drifting in around both of them, and for a second the silence between them held something entirely different than the one from last night, less unresolved tension, more something quietly settling into place.

"I’m sorry I caused you all that trouble" he said finally. "And I left because I didn’t really feel like sticking around after that."

"I get it." Her expression softened. "I’m sorry I wasn’t there sooner. I didn’t even know you’d gone until after."

"You couldn’t have known."

"Still." She exhaled, some of the tension in her shoulders easing. "I told you we’d talk later. Guess later ended up being tonight, whether either of us planned it that way or not."

Jason almost smiled at that, the echo of his own earlier thought landing strangely well from her mouth instead of his. "Guess so."

Neither of them moved for a second, standing there in the doorway, and Jason found himself very aware of the specific, quiet weight of the moment, the kiss from last night sitting unspoken between them, her sudden exit, the whole tangled, unresolved shape of whatever this actually was.

"You gonna let me in," Sarah said finally, a small, tentative smile tugging at her mouth, "or are we doing this whole conversation in your hallway?"

Jason stepped back, holding the door open wider. "Yeah. Come in."

She stepped past him into the apartment, and as he closed the door behind her, some quiet, cautious part of him wondered exactly what tonight was actually setting up to become, and found, somewhat to his own surprise, that he wasn’t dreading the answer the way he might have expected to twenty four hours ago.
