Song Jianguo lay on the floor of the Youth Palace, her eyes boredly staring at the graffiti on the ceiling, her legs swinging idly.
It had been a while since she followed Zhang Wenda to this place.
She wasn't the only one who was bored. Her cats were bored too, treating her prone body like a hurdle, leaping back and forth over her.
The door to the Youth Palace was nearby and wide open, but when Song Jianguo looked out at the completely transformed world, a trace of unease and timidity crept into her heart. She didn't dare run out by herself.
She didn't know why everything had suddenly changed, becoming so strange and unfamiliar.
She wanted to go back. Back to the familiar world she once knew. She'd even be willing to go back to catching mice forever. But she just couldn't find the way home, and even her cats couldn't sniff out the path.
After last night, the only one she recognized in this whole world was that damn Haozi.
But now, that damn Haozi had become a damn rabbit.
She propped her head up and looked complainingly at the big white rabbit in the distance. "Haozi, are you done yet? I'm getting hungry."
However, Zhang Wenda, dressed in his rabbit costume, acted as if he hadn't heard a thing. He continued to hand out balloons one by one to the little animals in exchange for the homework they had finished that day at the Youth Palace.
The little animals, holding balloons almost as big as they were, giggled with delight, looking utterly joyous.
A few of the little animals, clutching their balloons, curiously approached Song Jianguo, sizing her up along with the Black Cats around her.
One of them, a little yellow lop-eared dog, stared at the cat ears on her head. After a moment's hesitation, it suddenly opened its mouth and carefully nibbled on one.
"You little bastard! You're asking for it, aren't you!" An angry Song Jianguo shot to her feet, scaring the other little animals, who scattered with cries of alarm.
The little animals squealed and chattered, but Song Jianguo couldn't understand a single word. She had no idea what they were saying.
'She was actually very curious. Why was it that only Zhang Wenda could understand what these noisy little things were saying?'
Hearing the commotion behind him, Zhang Wenda turned to look. Seeing that Song Jianguo had lain back down, he went back to handing out his balloons until all the little animals had left the Youth Palace.
Zhang Wenda understood what these little animals were. They were children. It was just that in the adult world, they appeared as noisy little animals that were always doing inexplicable things.
With this shift in perspective, he was gradually beginning to understand things he hadn't before.
'Maybe this is what I looked like in my uncle's eyes,' he thought. 'I just wonder what I actually looked like to him.'
Just as Zhang Wenda was gathering up all the notebooks, he saw a little calf that hadn't left, crouching in a corner and crying softly.
He walked over, knelt on one knee, and asked gently, "Little Calf, what's wrong?"
"Teacher Rabbit, my hand... my hand is broken! It's bleeding so, so much!"
The calf held its front hoof up to Zhang Wenda. On it was a tiny little scratch. The wound was barely big enough for a single bandage, yet he was describing it so dramatically.
"It's okay. Here, close your eyes first." Zhang Wenda reached out a rabbit paw and gently covered the wound. "Ready? One... two... three."
When Zhang Wenda pulled his paw away, the wound on the calf's hoof had vanished. At the same time, Zhang Wenda felt a slight stinging pain on the back of his own hand.
"Wow! It's really healed! Thank you, Teacher Rabbit!" The little calf gave Zhang Wenda a tight hug, then skipped happily toward the Youth Palace exit with his balloon, the sad incident completely forgotten.
After the calf left, Zhang Wenda took off the rabbit-paw glove. He saw a small scratch on the back of his hand, which was covered in holes. The calf's wound had transferred to him.
Zhang Wenda had discovered this ability not long after putting on the suit. The gift his uncle mentioned before he left wasn't the suit itself, but the power of transference that came with it.
His uncle had never practiced Qi Gong Number 6. Instead, it was the rabbit suit that had practiced it. Whoever wore it would naturally know how.
"Haozi, I'm hungry." Song Jianguo walked up to Zhang Wenda and looked up at him.
Zhang Wenda rummaged in his pocket and pulled out three White Rabbit creamy candies, handing them to her.
"I want a real meal, not candy..." Song Jianguo protested in a low, disgruntled voice, even as she chewed on a candy.
"Just wait a bit. There are some things I need to take care of first." Zhang Wenda led Song Jianguo out of the Youth Palace and took a key fob for an electric scooter from his pocket.
With a light press of the button, a nearby sky-blue electric scooter chirped twice. "Get on."
"It's so small..." Although Song Jianguo wanted to protest more, she didn't say anything else. Zhang Wenda, in his rabbit suit, seemed like a different person. He was a little scary.
She sat on the back of the electric scooter, holding onto the white rabbit's waist as they drove down streets lined with prefabricated people. She looked at the bizarre and motley world around her with a mixture of curiosity and astonishment.
'Everyone here is so weird. They all have such strange and varied appearances. And everyone is holding a little block, staring down at it. Even the houses are made of living people!'
"Wenda, where is this?"
"This is the world of adults. We've grown up."
"We've grown up? So quickly?"
"Sometimes, growing up happens in an instant."
After saying this, Zhang Wenda twisted the throttle hard. The scooter shot forward, instantly accelerating past a car next to them.
Now that they had fully entered Thought Wave Two, everything had changed drastically. There were no more supply and marketing co-ops, no Friendship Store, not a single trace of the past.
But there was one exception: the Xinhua Bookstore. Aside from the new white anti-theft sensors at the entrance and a few updates to the storefront, the Xinhua Bookstore was still the same Xinhua Bookstore, still in its original location.
"Haozi! There's food over there!" Song Jianguo pointed to a fusion restaurant next to the Xinhua Bookstore, but Zhang Wenda pulled her straight toward the bookstore instead.
DING-DONG. "Welcome." As the sound chimed, the automatic glass doors slid open slowly.
As if having long anticipated his return, 2826 was already there waiting.
"Wenda, I need to explain this." 2826 blocked his path, but Zhang Wenda grabbed him directly. "Take me to Shanghai. I need to find Old Tan."
Although Zhang Wenda's tone was very calm, devoid of its previous hysteria, 2826 could feel the suppressed fury in his words.
"Headquarters didn't have time to send reinforcements to the Internet World back then! The attacks they were facing were just as bad, if not worse!"
Zhang Wenda didn't question him. He just stared at 2826 and said, enunciating each word, "I want to see Tan Yougen."
