Upon the moon, on a silver landscape dotted with craters, Zhang Wenda and the others slowly walked toward the distant altar.
After all this trouble, they had finally reached the last step. All he had to do was worship the Moon God, and the curse on him would be lifted.
"Are you sure your god can handle the curse of Kopan?" Zhang Wenda asked, his hand touching the hilt of his blade through his clothes.
"Don’t worry. Since the High Priest said so, it’s guaranteed to work. He never says anything that isn’t true," Ahava said with great confidence.
Gazing up at the silver altar, Zhang Wenda knew he had no other choice for the time being and stepped forward to ascend it.
Once atop the altar, he found that apart from some murals and a sacrificial platform made of jade, there was nothing else. It was remarkably simple.
Zhang Wenda said to Ahava, who was standing to the side, "Let’s begin the worship. What was your Moon Goddess’s name again?"
"Ishchel! You need to be more respectful to the Goddess right now! The gods can hear what is said on the altar! Do you even want her help anymore?"
As he issued this reminder, Ahava began pulling out various bottles and jars from within his clothes.
"My friend, I paid a steep price to get these from the Moon Priests for you. Later, you must sincerely pray for the goddess to save you. You must be devout!"
"Got it. Be devout, right? No problem!"
Soon, liquids from the various bottles were mixed together. Along with the addition of various herbs, a pale purple smoke began to spread over the altar.
Though Zhang Wenda’s mind was filled with questions, he saw Ahava, his face now solemn, take out a snake-headed whistle and begin to play. He decided to wait patiently.
Amidst the long, drawn-out notes of the snake whistle and surrounded by the smoke, bursts of ever-changing fireworks began to emerge from Zhang Wenda’s chest, their colors and shapes shifting with his thoughts.
After leaping from Zhang Wenda’s body, these fireworks, guided by the snake whistle, danced upon the altar.
"Do you know what these are?" Zhang Wenda asked Hu Maomao.
Watching the fireworks that seemed to be pouring from his mind, Zhang Wenda felt a growing unease. Something felt strange.
"Don’t you have your own phone? Why don’t you look it up yourself?" Though Hu Maomao said this, he still pulled out his phone and started searching.
"According to what I’m finding online, Ishchel was betrayed once, so anyone who wants to worship her must first remove their own soul and speak to her without any deception or concealment."
Zhang Wenda pointed at the sparks constantly popping on the altar and said in shock, "So that’s my soul?!"
"No. According to the Mayans, that’s your soul’s ’glint.’ To be precise, these are fragments of your soul. But don’t get too caught up in their ideology."
As he watched the sparks pile up on the altar, Zhang Wenda could distinctly feel the space around him begin to warp.
"She’s coming!" As they were about to face the Mayan Moon God, everyone present wore an exceptionally serious expression.
Finally, enveloped by the purple mist, the surrounding silver light gradually coalesced in the air, forming an eight-meter-tall giant goddess. A snake was coiled around her neck, and she was draped in silver gauze. Her presence was overwhelming.
"Why have you come for me, outsider?" The woman looked down from her great height at the rabbit below, her voice resonating in everyone’s mind.
Ahava quickly ran over and helped Zhang Wenda kneel in supplication.
"O merciful Ishchel! By a strange twist of fate, this outsider has become a sacrificial offering to Kopan! Please, save this pitiful unbeliever!"
Ishchel said nothing more, merely gazing silently at Ahava.
Before long, Ahava’s brow was covered in sweat. He hurriedly backed away, leaving Zhang Wenda to face her alone.
Zhang Wenda raised his head, looking up at the towering woman as she slowly floated closer to him.
Zhang Wenda wanted to say something flattering, if only to make the situation less awkward, but he had absolutely no experience dealing with gods.
Whether it was because his soul had been drawn out, the words that blurted out of Zhang Wenda’s mouth were incredibly bland.
"Um... can you help me get rid of this Kopan problem? Thanks."
Ishchel, however, didn’t seem to mind his bland words. She neither agreed nor disagreed, simply stating, "Have the others leave my altar."
Seeing this sign of her willingness to negotiate, Ahava quickly urged the others to leave, leaving Zhang Wenda alone on the altar.
"You’re really willing to help me? Thank you, esteemed Moon God." Looking at the woman before him, Zhang Wenda was overcome with excitement. ’It’s finally going to be over.’
After seeing that everyone else was standing below the altar, at least several dozen meters away, Ishchel looked at Zhang Wenda and slowly nodded. "Come, a little closer."
Zhang Wenda obediently complied.
"Closer still."
Zhang Wenda moved closer again.
The next second, Ishchel swung her right hand forcefully. Zhang Wenda’s body flashed backward in an instant, dodging the attack.
But with a sharp CRACK, all the soul sparks on the altar scattered instantly, tumbling down the steps.
"Huh? What’s the meaning of this?" His mind a blank, Zhang Wenda stared dumbly at the scene before him.
"What’s the meaning of this? It means I’m going to kill you!"
As a faint smile touched Ishchel’s impassive face, her massive body instantly dissolved into a cloud of black crows that blotted out the sky and descended upon Zhang Wenda.
"Tang Xingxiong!" Zhang Wenda erupted in a sudden rage, roaring at the sky-blotting murder of crows.
He never would have imagined that the so-called goddess was actually this bastard in disguise!
"Did you think I didn’t know what you were planning? Did you think I’d just look the other way and let you slowly build up your strength before coming to cause trouble for me? Do you take me for a fool?"
His mind a blank, Zhang Wenda could only dodge frantically on pure instinct, but the sharp beaks pecked relentlessly at his vital spots. In no time, his white, fluffy coat was shredded with gashes.
Down below, Hu Maomao and Song Jianguo saw the scene unfold and immediately rushed toward the altar. But they were precisely the ones Tang Xingxiong had deliberately sent away. It was too late for them to return in time.
The black crows blotted out the sky, and monsters began to emerge from the darkness within the swarm. They completely surrounded Zhang Wenda, frantically tearing at his flesh.
The white rabbit skin was torn apart, revealing a hollow body beneath. As a gash was ripped into that hollow form, the small child in a school uniform hidden deep inside was exposed.
As the tearing continued, the child began to wail in agony.
