The moment Zhang Wenda stepped out of the office, he froze in his tracks. He was looking at the energy-saving light on the ceiling.
The once-ordinary, circular light now looked completely different in his eyes.
It was as if he had three eyes. His red eye saw a giant mushroom cloud erupt before him. His yellow eye saw a warm sunset. And his blue eye saw the glowing powder inside the light bulb.
Zhang Wenda staggered forward. Nearby, the drawer of a wooden cabinet began to slide in and out like a mouth, starting to speak. "Get out... get out..."
The drawer’s words echoed like a whisper in Zhang Wenda’s mind, making his head feel like it was about to split open.
"I’m going, I’m going! Stop shouting!" Zhang Wenda said in agony, clutching his head.
He didn’t know where "out" was, so he could only instinctively follow the path he’d taken earlier, heading for the elevator.
It was a difficult path to walk. Everything before him now had three different, distinct extensions, as if he were seeing three separate worlds at once.
The elevator arrived with a DING. At the sound, Zhang Wenda saw a microwave oven, a school bell, and a cell phone.
He stumbled inside, and the elevator doors slowly closed. On his left and right were metal panels, barely reflective enough to show a person’s silhouette.
In the panel to his left, Zhang Wenda saw a red monster. In the panel to his right, he saw a blurry blue rabbit.
When Zhang Wenda looked at them, he felt them looking back at him.
"You’re back again? This isn’t a dream. This isn’t a dream anymore." As Zhang Wenda kept repeating this, the elevator doors opened.
The clamor from the first-floor lobby instantly flooded in. Zhang Wenda struggled to open his eyes and look out. He saw the boisterous crowd and heard the cacophonous noise.
The crowd was no longer made of individuals but had become a single entity. It separated from the cacophonous noise, forming two behemoths standing before him.
’Don’t panic, don’t panic. It’s all a hallucination. Just get through it. Steady, steady. I have to get stronger, strong enough!’ Zhang Wenda kept psyching himself up.
He stepped out of the elevator, only to find the cacophonous noise blocking his path, manifesting as two faint breezes.
"Excuse me, I need to get through. Please let me pass." Zhang Wenda tried to push the sound away, but it was everywhere; he couldn’t push it at all.
"I said! I need to get through! Let me pass!!" As Zhang Wenda’s voice rose, the cacophonous noise instantly transformed into three different sounds.
One was a furious roar, one was a series of grave discussions, and one was the grating shriek of a child.
These three waves of sound were so powerful they shoved Zhang Wenda right back into the elevator. When he struggled to his feet, he saw the young, yellow Zhang Wenda standing before him.
The child looked at him, smiled, and raised his small hands to gently cover his own ears. Zhang Wenda did the same, and the sounds before him vanished instantly.
"Thanks." Zhang Wenda took the child’s hand and continued forward. This time, the crowd blocked his path again.
The crowd before him moved back and forth as if it were glitching. Without sound, it was like a silent film. Through its ceaseless movements, it eventually formed a face—the face of Tang Xingxiong.
Having learned from his previous experience, Zhang Wenda didn’t act rashly. Instead, he looked from side to side as if waiting. This time, it was the red monster that acted. It stepped out of the metal panel in the elevator, raised the scythe in its hand, and slashed viciously at the giant face.
The face shattered, and the path was finally clear. Nothing blocked Zhang Wenda’s way anymore.
However, just as Zhang Wenda was about to leave, the red monster stood before him, glaring menacingly, the hatred in its eyes growing stronger.
"A mirror! I need a mirror!" As Zhang Wenda cried out, a mirror materialized in front of the monster, blocking its attack.
When Zhang Wenda looked down, he saw that he himself was now the blue rabbit.
He glanced at the red monster pounding on the mirror, then led the yellow child toward the main entrance. But when he tried to push the door open, his hand passed right through the handle.
"Why can’t I open the door?" Zhang Wenda looked at the young, yellow Wenda. The child pointed at the red monster in the mirror.
"Do I have to take it with me? Can’t we leave without it?"
After confirming this was the only way, Zhang Wenda reluctantly made the mirror vanish. The moment he saw the red monster charge at him, he clutched the young Wenda and leaped with all his might, landing directly on the red monster’s back.
He didn’t know why he did it. It was as if some unseen force, some instinct, was compelling him.
His lower body and that of the young Wenda fused with the monster’s back. The monster tried to throw them off, but it was impossible.
As it struggled, Zhang Wenda realized he could control the monster’s body, as if it were a mount. Although it continued to resist, he gradually began to get the hang of it.
He could almost feel the ever-swelling rage in the monster’s heart.
"Don’t move, don’t move! We’re getting out! We have to get out together to become stronger!" Zhang Wenda’s words seemed to have an effect; the monster’s resistance weakened considerably.
Under Zhang Wenda’s control, the monster walked to the building’s entrance, reached out, and turned the handle.
The door opened, but it didn’t lead to the training grounds from before. Instead, there was only a pitch-black void.
When Zhang Wenda looked down, a pink, circular island covered in wrinkles appeared before him.
As Zhang Wenda looked at the island, some of the creatures living on it also saw him.
One of them was a giant monster with the skull of a bird, standing at least seven or eight meters tall. It glowed with a yellow light and wore a tattered cloth. Its torso was woven from writhing black tentacles. Holding a pen in one hand and paper in the other, it appeared before Zhang Wenda.
The creature’s voice was deafening, piercing Zhang Wenda’s mind like a physical blow. "Hello, consciousness. I am the Hippocampus."
The moment it finished speaking, a great RUSH swept over him, as if some powerful force were yanking him backward. The speed was so extreme that Zhang Wenda felt as if his soul was being ripped from his body.
Finally, under this powerful pull, Zhang Wenda crashed down like a meteorite onto Ouyang Shuangdian’s stool.
Zhang Wenda gasped, and he was instantly wide awake. He looked around and found himself still sitting in the office. Ouyang Shuangdian, his head now grown back, was watching him with an amused expression while twirling a test tube in his hand.
"Not bad, not bad at all. Looks like Old Tan didn’t screw me over this time. He finally sent over a capable assistant."
