Infinite Rebate: I Get Richer Every Time I Spend
Chapter 288: She Stepped InsideGracie stepped up to the reception desk and spoke with calm, practiced ease.
"I’m here for Durnik. I have an appointment."
The receptionist stared at her for a second too long.
First came the shock of recognition. Then came the quieter, more personal blow of standing in front of her.
Gracie’s skin looked expensive under the lobby lights, smooth and carefully maintained in a way that made the other woman suddenly aware of herself. Even her perfume smelled rich, soft and layered, the kind that did not come from anything ordinary.
The receptionist had always thought herself pretty enough. Standing across from Gracie, that confidence thinned fast.
Then the second realization hit harder.
This was the same woman who had exposed Durnik online. The same woman who had put his humiliation in front of millions. And yet here she was, walking into his company in fitted clothes, asking for him by name like nothing about that scandal should have stopped her.
Is she crazy? the receptionist thought. Or does she just not care if she dies here?
"Em... Du... Durnik?" she stammered, the name catching on her tongue. There were too many reasons for the nerves at once: the beauty in front of her, the rumors, the scandal, and the simple fear of saying the wrong thing where the wrong person might hear it.
She finally picked up the phone and called upstairs.
"She’s here," she said carefully. "Gracie... she’s asking for you."
She did not need to ask for a full name. Everyone in the building already knew who Gracie was.
While the call connected, Gracie remained where she stood, unbothered. In the lobby, phones were already rising. A few people angled for photos. Others started recording. Soft murmurs spread through the open space as more staff realized who had just walked in. Gracie did not flinch. She had lived with cameras long enough that a lobby full of staring strangers barely registered as pressure.
Upstairs, Durnik shot forward the moment he heard her name.
He almost did not believe it. She had actually come.
"Let her in," he said at once. Then his voice sharpened. "What are you still wasting time for? Send her up. If you keep her waiting, don’t bother coming in tomorrow."
The threat landed clean.
The receptionist’s face changed immediately. She hung up, stood a little too quickly, and turned back to Gracie with forced politeness, suddenly terrified of slowing her down for even another second.
"Please go in," she said, pointing toward the elevators. "Top floor."
Gracie gave a small nod and walked on, leaving the receptionist staring after her while the lobby continued to watch every step.
Lena was still in the middle of cursing him when the phone rang.
Her voice filled the office, sharp and raw, every word spilling out of weeks of swallowed humiliation. She did not care how loud she was. She did not care how ugly it sounded. All she wanted was to tear into him.
Then Durnik lifted one hand and looked at her.
"Shut up."
The authority in his voice cut through the room so cleanly that her next words died on her tongue. For a second she just stood there breathing hard, chest rising and falling, the anger still burning under her skin with nowhere left to go.
In that silence, the reality of him returned.
This was not a man she could drag into an equal fight. This was Durnik. Chairman. Employer. The same man whose temper could end a career with one call. The same man she had spent too long trying to please, only to be pushed down the moment someone more exciting appeared.
Her face twisted. The fury cracked. Tears followed hard behind it.
She stayed where she was, sobbing under her breath while he answered the call like her breakdown was only background noise.
By the time he hung up, his mood had completely changed. Satisfaction sat openly on his face. Gracie was downstairs. Gracie was coming up. Everything he wanted was moving into place.
Only then did he look back at the woman still standing in front of his desk, eyes red, shoulders shaking.
"Clean this up," he said coldly.
Lena blinked through the tears.
He gestured at the papers and mess she had thrown across the floor. "Arrange everything you scattered. Then go downstairs and start work as a receptionist. If you don’t like it, resign immediately. I won’t repeat myself."
The words left no room for argument.
Lena bent down.
Her hands were still trembling as she gathered the papers one by one, picking up the mess she had made in her rage while he watched from above like none of her loyalty had ever meant anything. A pen had rolled beneath the desk. A folder lay open near the leg of his chair.
She reached for each item quietly now, the fight already drained out of her body, leaving only the hollow work of putting everything back in place.
Each sheet she lifted felt heavier than it should have. The office was too silent around her. Even her breathing sounded too loud. When the floor was finally clear again, she straightened up with her face tight and wet, eyes lowered, unable to look at him directly.
Durnik did not soften.
"And remove all your things from this office," he added. "Immediately."
The order landed with the same flat finality as the rest. Not cruel in tone. Just absolute. As if her years of running his errands, enduring his hands, and staying past every decent hour had been nothing more than temporary convenience.
Before she could answer, a soft knock touched the door.
The change in him was instant.
He smoothed his suit jacket with both hands, adjusted the collar, and fixed his posture like a man about to receive someone important. The irritation left his shoulders. Even the expression on his face shifted, the harshness from a second earlier replaced by something almost polished. In the space of a breath, the man who had just stripped her position away became charming again.
"Come in," he said, voice suddenly pleasant.
Lena remained frozen near the side of the room, still holding the last of her ruined dignity in place, when the door opened.
Gracie stepped inside.
