Chapter 24: Learning the Hard WayThe lighting in the bedroom was soft and warm, low enough to blur hard edges and leave everything in a gentle haze. Even so, it couldn’t hide the thick current of tension that had settled between them.
Victoria’s fingers rested lightly against her own lips. Her face was flushed a deep, uneven rose, the color high on her cheekbones and spreading down her neck. For several long seconds she seemed frozen, eyes unfocused, as if her mind had short-circuited.
The thin silk nightgown she wore was nearly translucent under the lamp. Every shallow breath made the fabric shift and cling, outlining the full curve of her breasts and the soft indentation of her waist. A few lingering drops of water from her earlier shower still traced slow paths along her collarbone.
Jason, still half in her arms from the earlier pull, felt heat surge low in his body. The proximity, the scent of her clean skin and whatever light perfume clung to the silk, the way her body had gone taut~it all hit him at once. Wanting her was automatic. Controlling that want took real effort.
He kept his voice carefully concerned, almost boyish.
"Aunt Victoria? You okay? You’re really warm... and you’re shaking a little."
The sound of his voice made her flinch as if a live current had run through her. Victoria blinked hard, reality rushing back in. The flush on her face deepened instantly, flooding all the way to her ears and the delicate skin of her throat. She looked suddenly younger, caught and exposed, and the vulnerability of it only made the moment sharper.
She turned her face away, unable to meet his eyes. Her hands twisted in the hem of the nightgown.
Why did I react like that?
My whole body feels like it’s on fire.
Is this a fever?
I just made a complete fool of myself in front of him.
This was supposed to be a simple teaching moment. Nothing more. She repeated the thought like a shield.
I’m not thinking anything inappropriate. I’m not.
She drew a careful breath, trying to steady her voice.
"I... I’m fine."
The slight tremor in the words betrayed her.
Jason watched the flustered, almost girlish expression on the face of a woman who was usually so composed. The contrast was dangerously appealing. He had to work to keep his own expression innocent.
"You sure?" he asked, a hint of quiet amusement under the concern. "You don’t look fine."
Victoria bit her lower lip and forced the words out again, firmer this time.
"I’m fine."
Her gaze stayed fixed somewhere past his shoulder. Her pulse was visible in the hollow of her throat.
Jason tilted his head, still playing the role of the slightly puzzled younger man.
"Then... didn’t you say you were going to teach me something tonight? Some kind of... knowledge?"
His eyes stayed clear and open, no obvious heat in them.
Victoria stared at him for a second as if she had forgotten the entire premise. Then she nodded quickly, seizing the excuse like a lifeline.
"Yes. Right. Come here. Auntie will show you the proper way to... massage."
Jason obediently shifted, stretching out and closing his eyes. His body looked completely relaxed, as if he trusted her without reservation.
"You’re really good to me, Aunt Victoria," he murmured.
The soft gratitude in his voice landed somewhere tender in her chest. She had helped raise him. In many ways she had given him as much care as Sarah ever had. Seeing him still so open with her made something protective and affectionate rise alongside the newer, more dangerous feelings.
"Of course," she said quietly. "Once you learn, you’ll be able to take care of yourself properly."
Jason opened his eyes again, letting a small, troubled frown appear.
"It feels kind of complicated. I’m not sure I’m getting it."
Victoria’s expression softened with encouragement.
"That’s okay. Auntie can show you as many times as you need. You’re smart~you’ll pick it up."
In her mind the logic was still clean: he was young, inexperienced, and someone had to teach him these things. Sarah couldn’t do it. She was the closest adult who could. It was only responsible.
Jason nodded, voice meek. "Alright. I’ll try my best."
Minutes stretched. The only sounds were the soft shift of skin against skin and the quiet rhythm of their breathing. The air in the room grew heavier, warmer.
Victoria finally asked, a little breathless, "How does it feel? Are you starting to understand?"
Her eyes searched his face, hoping for some sign that the lesson was landing.
Jason’s brow furrowed in genuine-looking confusion.
"Aunt Victoria... I still don’t really get what the point of this part is."
She was quiet for a moment, considering. Maybe she wasn’t being clear enough. Maybe the pressure or the angle was wrong. A stubborn resolve settled over her features. She had already come this far. She wasn’t going to leave the lesson half-finished.
She drew a slow breath, steeling herself.
"Then we’ll go slower," she said. "And I’ll be more thorough."
