Xavier woke up the next morning with one thing on his mind.

Testing the binding system.

He checked the system before getting out of bed.

[ REBATE SYSTEM ]

Daily Cap Reset

[ New Rebate Cycle Active ]

[ Net Balance: $209,523.00 ]

[ Bound Target: Amira Hassan — 80% ]

[ Binding Reward Cycle: 6 days remaining ]

Six days to use the weekly binding spend, he noted. First time testing it properly. He sat up. Let’s see what it actually does.

He showered, dressed and sat at his desk with his coffee.

The binding reward is once a week, he thought. Which means I need to be strategic about what I spend on her and when. Small transactions waste the window. The binding reward is designed for significant spend.

He pulled up his notes and started thinking.

What does Amira actually need right now.

The project had won. The board grant was coming. Research phase two was the next step and she’d already identified Kenvale General as the target partnership.

A partnership application to a hospital nutrition department needs professional documentation, he thought. Proper research formatting, proposal writing, legal review of the collaboration terms. He looked at his coffee. That’s not cheap. And it’s exactly the kind of thing she’d spend months trying to do on a student budget.

He picked up his phone and started making calls.

By 10AM he had quotes from three professional research consultancy firms in Kenvale. The kind of firms that prepared academic partnership proposals for university departments, not students but money didn’t care about the distinction.

The best one was a boutique operation called Meridian Research Partners. Two senior consultants, fifteen years of academic partnership work, a track record that included three successful hospital collaborations in the last two years alone.

Xavier called them directly.

The consultant who answered was professional and slightly surprised to be speaking with someone who sounded eighteen but talked like someone twice that age.

"Full partnership proposal package," Xavier said. "Academic to clinical. Riverside University Food and Nutrition department to Kenvale General Hospital nutrition services. Timeline in two weeks."

"That’s an aggressive timeline for a full proposal," the consultant said carefully.

"I’m aware," Xavier said. "What does being aggressive cost?"

A pause while numbers were calculated.

"$8,500," the consultant said. "For the full package on that timeline."

"Done," Xavier said. "I’ll send the project documentation within the hour. The lead researcher’s name is Amira Hassan. All correspondence goes through me."

He hung up and transferred the documentation Amira had shared with him over the past weeks. Everything the consultancy needed to build a proposal that would actually land.

Then he made the payment.

[ REBATE SYSTEM ]

Transaction Detected: $8,500 — Research Consultancy — Binding Target Spend

Binding Reward Multiplier: 3x = $25,500

Base Multiplier (Tier 2): 2x = $51,000

Total Return: $51,000

Cap Used: $8,500 of $500,000

[ Net Balance: $201,023.00 → $252,023.00 ]

Xavier looked at that notification for a long moment.

$8,500 spent, he thought. $51,000 returned. Binding reward runs first. 3x on the spend. Then the base multiplier doubles that result on top. He looked at the balance. Only $8,500 counted against the daily cap.

This is a completely different level.

He read the notification again just to confirm it was real.

At Tier 1 I was doubling small donations, he thought. At Tier 2 with a bound target I’m returning five times what I spend in a single transaction and barely touching the cap. He sat back. And the binding cycle resets in six days.

He picked up his phone.

Xavier: check your project email in about 48 hours.

Amira: why

Xavier: you’ll see.

Amira: Xavier...

Xavier: Amira...

Amira: 🙄

He put the phone down and pulled up his cap tracker.

$8,500 used of $500,000 cap, he noted. Plenty left.

He spent the next two hours cycling through the rest of his daily spending on campus transactions, online purchases, the usual rhythm but his mind kept returning to the binding mechanic.

One bound target at 80% favorability returns 5x on the spend itself, he thought. Two bound targets would run simultaneously. Different weekly cycles, different spend windows. He pulled up the system interface and checked the binding parameters again.

Binding requires 80% favorability minimum, he read. No limit stated on number of concurrent bindings.

Interesting.

He thought about Sarah Torres sitting at 20% favorability.

Long way from 80, he noted. But the showcase is in under two weeks. And the anonymous studio booking already moved something in how she’s thinking about whoever sent it. He closed the interface. When she finds out it was me and she will find out that number is going to move fast.

His phone buzzed.

Amira again.

Amira: I don’t know why but I feel like I should be suspicious of you right now

Xavier: that’s probably healthy

Amira: Xavier.,

Xavier: check the email in 48 hours. Then tell me if you’re still suspicious.

A long pause.

Amira: I’m still having mixed feelings...

Xavier: You said they were gone?

Amira: they came back a little

Xavier: 😐

Amira: 😄 goodnight Xavier

Xavier looked at that last message for a moment.

Goodnight, he thought. It’s 11AM.

He almost smiled and put the phone face down.

The consultancy delivered ahead of schedule.

Thirty six hours later Xavier’s email received the full draft proposal. He read through it that evening at his desk with his coffee.

It was good. The kind of document that didn’t look like it came from a student project. It looked like it came from an established research department with institutional backing and a track record.

This is what $8,500 actually buys, he thought. Not a document. A door that opens.

He forwarded it to Amira’s email with a single line.

Partnership proposal for Kenvale General. Review it. If you want changes I’ll handle them. Submit when you’re ready.

He put his phone face down and went back to the phase 3 report.

Fifteen minutes later his phone started buzzing repeatedly.

He picked it up.

Amira: XAVIER

Amira: what is this

Amira: this is a full professional proposal

Amira: how

Amira: this would have taken me six months to put together on my own

Amira: XAVIER

Xavier: do you want changes or not

Amira: I...

Amira: no it’s perfect

Amira: it’s actually perfect

Xavier: then submit it.

A pause.

Amira: why do you keep doing things like this

Xavier: because they make sense to do

Amira: that’s not an answer

Xavier: it’s the only one I have

Another pause. Longer.

Amira: Xavier I need to ask you something and I need you to actually answer it

Xavier: ask

Amira: what am I to you

Xavier looked at that message for a long moment.

What is she to you, he thought. Bound target. 80% favorability. First binding. 5x return on weekly spend. He looked at the screen. Also the only person in this new life who figured out what direction he moved in before anyone else. The only person who said not mixed and meant it like a statement of fact rather than an admission.

He typed back.

Xavier: someone worth investing in.

Amira: that’s very Xavier of you

Xavier: you asked.

Amira: I know.

Amira: goodnight. Actually goodnight this time.

Xavier: goodnight Amira.

He set the phone down and checked the gauge.

Amira — 84%

Four percent from a proposal and two text conversations, he noted.

He looked at his balance.

$252,023.

He looked at the phase 3 report.

Ashworth.

He looked at the calendar.

Sarah’s showcase in twelve days.

Everything converging, he thought. Right on schedule.

He got back to work.
