Femi waited nine days.

Xavier had been watching for it. Not anxiously, just the way you watch weather when you know something is coming. Femi was a man who needed to respond. Nine days of silence from a man like that wasn’t peace. It was preparation.

"Something happened," Kelvin said, sitting down without being invited.

"Obviously," Xavier said without looking up from his phone.

"Someone filed a complaint with the academic integrity board," Kelvin said. "About the exhibition project. Anonymous submission. Claims the research data was fabricated and the funding for the project came from an undisclosed external source with a conflict of interest."

Xavier looked up.

"When," he said.

"Yesterday afternoon. Amira got a notification this morning. She’s been called to a review meeting with the board on Thursday." Kelvin lowered his voice slightly. "Bro whoever filed it attached documentation. Looks official. Bank transfer records showing money moving into a project account from an unnamed source."

Femi, Xavier thought. He went to the academic board instead of coming at me directly. He sat back. Smart actually. He can’t touch me financially. "How is Amira," he said.

Xavier was already picking up his phone and rang her.

She picked up on the second ring.

"I know," Xavier said before she could speak.

A pause. "Kelvin told you."

"Yes."

"Xavier, the documentation they attached..." her voice was controlled but only just. "The transfer records. That’s the money you sent for the project. If they trace it to you and can’t explain the source it looks like..."

"I know what it looks like," Xavier said. "Don’t go to that meeting without talking to me first."

"It’s Thursday."

"I know. Don’t go without talking to me first."

A longer pause.

"Xavier what are you going to do," she said.

"Handle it," he said.

"You always say..."

"Amira." His voice was steady. "Have I said I’d handle something and not handled it."

The pause that followed was the answer.

"No," she said quietly.

"Then trust the pattern," he said. "Go to your lectures. Don’t respond to the board notification yet. Talk to nobody about it until I tell you to."

"Okay," she said. Just that.

He hung up and sat for exactly thirty seconds doing nothing.

Femi went to the academic integrity board, he thought. Which means Ashworth knows about it. Which means this isn’t just Femi being emotional. This is a coordinated move using Ashworth’s institutional access to file something that looks legitimate.

They’re using the university against me.

He almost smiled.

He picked up his phone and made two calls.

The lawyer. A sharp woman in her forties named Patricia Osei who had the particular energy of someone who had won fights nobody expected her to win. She took the call at 11AM.

Xavier explained the situation in four minutes. Clean, factual, no unnecessary detail.

"Anonymous complaint to academic integrity board," she said when he finished. "Fabricated documentation. You’re saying the transfer records are real but the conflict of interest claim is fabricated."

"The transfer was a legitimate project investment," Xavier said. "Silent partner arrangement. Documented. The board grant was awarded on merit. I have the judge’s notes from the exhibition if needed."

"I’ll need everything," she said. "Transfer documentation, the original project partnership agreement, exhibition results. Can you get me all of that today."

"Within the hour," Xavier replied.

"Then we will file a counter complaint before Thursday," she said. "Anonymous complaints to academic boards are taken seriously but they have a process. If we can demonstrate the documentation was manipulated before the review meeting the complaint gets suspended pending investigation." She paused. "This will cost you."

"How much," Xavier said.

She named a figure.

"Fine," Xavier said. "I’ll send everything within the hour."
