Infinite Rebate System: Beautiful Women And Endless Returns
Chapter 29: Face slapFemi’s move, he wrote. Academic integrity complaint. Anonymous. Fabricated documentation using real transfer records. Filed through faculty administrative access using Ashworth’s network.
He looked at what he’d written.
Femi thought he was attacking the project, he thought. He was actually handing me direct evidence that Ashworth’s network has access to university administrative systems and is willing to use them for personal interference. He closed the note. That’s not a defensive problem. That’s an offensive opportunity.
He picked up his phone and called Patricia back.
"The counter complaint," he said when she answered. "Can it be expanded?"
"Expanded how," she said carefully.
"The manipulated documentation came from a faculty administrative account," Xavier said. "If that can be proven it’s not just an anonymous complaint. It’s institutional misconduct. Potentially criminal interference in an academic process."
Silence on the line.
"That’s a significantly larger filing," Patricia said.
"I know," Xavier said. "Can it be done?"
"If you have evidence of administrative account access, yes," she said. "That moves this from an academic dispute to something the university board itself has to investigate. Independently of the integrity board."
"I’ll have the evidence by tomorrow morning," Xavier said. "Start preparing the expanded filing."
"Xavier," she said. The first time she’d used his name. "If this goes where you’re pointing it, whoever is on the other end of that administrative account is going to know you’re coming."
"Good," Xavier said. "I want them to know."
He hung up.
He was at his desk that evening reviewing the phase 3 report when his phone buzzed.
Amira.
Amira: the board sent another notification. Review meeting suspended. They said the complaint is under investigation.
Xavier: I know.
Amira: you did this already
Xavier: I told you I’d handle it.
A long pause.
Amira: Xavier
Xavier: Amira.
Amira: who are you
Xavier looked at that message for a moment.
Who are you?
Same question she asked at dinner, he thought. Different weight to it now.
Xavier: someone who doesn’t lose things he’s decided to keep.
The pause that followed was longer than usual.
Amira: okay
Amira: Okay Xavier.
He checked the gauge.
Amira — 87%
Three percent, he noted. From one handled problem.
He set the phone down and looked at the phase 3 report.
Ashworth, he thought. You used the institution against me.
Now I’m going to use it against you.
He opened the report and got back to work.
The security contact delivered at 7AM.
One message. Two attachments.
Administrative account confirmed. Attached: login records showing the complaint was filed from a faculty account registered to Professor Daniel Ashworth. Also attached: internal email chain showing prior discussion of the complaint between Ashworth and two second tier Cardinal Circle operators. This is enough.
Xavier read it twice.
Then forwarded everything to Patricia.
She called him back in twenty minutes.
"This is significantly more than I expected," she said.
"Is it enough," Xavier asked.
"It’s more than enough," she said. "This isn’t just institutional misconduct. The email chain shows premeditation and coordination. We’re talking about criminal interference in an academic process, abuse of administrative privilege and potentially conspiracy to commit fraud." A pause. "Xavier if we file this the university board has no choice but to open a full independent investigation into Ashworth."
"File it," Xavier said.
"Today," she said. Not a question.
"This morning," Xavier said.

He put the phone down and checked the time.
8:15AM.
Ashworth will know by noon, he thought. Which means Femi will know by early afternoon.
He picked up his bag and headed to campus.
Riverside University on a Wednesday morning was its usual self. Students moving between buildings, the cafeteria filling up, the particular noise of an institution running on routine.
Xavier crossed the courtyard at his usual pace.
He spotted Femi near the Arts building entrance. The same position he always occupied at this hour, same two friends, the third one slightly behind. Femi saw Xavier at the same time.
Something was different in Femi’s posture this morning.
Not confidence. Something tighter than that. The posture of someone who had made a move and was waiting to see what came back.
He doesn’t know yet, Xavier thought. The filing went in an hour ago. It hasn’t reached him.
Xavier kept walking.
He went to his lecture, sat down, and opened his phone under the desk.
Patricia had sent an update at 9:30.
Filing received by university board. Ashworth has been notified and placed on administrative leave pending investigation. Campus security has been informed. Board statement will be released to faculty and students this afternoon.
Xavier read it.
Administrative leave, he thought. By 9:30AM.
He put his phone away and paid attention to the lecture for the first time in weeks.
The board statement went out at 2PM.
Xavier was in the cafeteria when the notifications started appearing on people’s phones around him. The particular ripple that moved through a space when something significant landed simultaneously on everyone’s screens.
He didn’t look at his own phone.
He watched the room instead.
The ripple reached his table. Then the next one. Conversations stopping mid sentence. People showing each other screens. The accelerating noise of an institution processing unexpected information.
Professor Ashworth, he heard from two tables over. Administrative leave.
Investigation, from somewhere behind him.
Academic integrity, from near the entrance.
Xavier drank his coffee.
His phone buzzed. Kelvin.
Kelvin: BRO
Kelvin: are you seeing this
Kelvin: ASHWORTH
Xavier: I see it.
Kelvin: how are you so calm
Xavier: I’m drinking coffee.
Kelvin: XAVIER
Xavier put the phone face down.
Now Femi, he thought.
He didn’t have to wait long.
He was crossing back toward the Food and Nutrition block at 2:45 when he saw the crowd.
Not a large crowd. Maybe fifteen students gathered near the east courtyard wall, the particular cluster that forms when something is happening that people want to watch but don’t want to be seen watching.
Xavier slowed.
