Femi was at the centre of it.

Or rather. Femi was at the edge of a conversation that had clearly started badly and gotten worse. Two men Xavier didn’t recognise were standing in front of him. Not students. Older, dressed plainly, carrying themselves with the particular stillness of people who worked for something institutional.

University security. Plain clothes.

They weren’t touching Femi. They didn’t need to. They were talking to him quietly and steadily with the energy of people who had a job to do and were doing it without drama.

Femi’s two regular friends were standing slightly apart from him. Not helping. Not moving. The third one, the bigger one he’d brought as security was gone entirely.

Xavier watched from the edge of the gathering for a moment.

Femi looked up.

Found Xavier across the courtyard.

The expression on his face in that moment was something Xavier filed carefully away. Not anger. Something more complicated than anger. The particular look of a man who had made a calculated move and watched it detonate in his own hands and was only now understanding how it happened.

Xavier held his gaze for exactly three seconds.

Then turned and kept walking.

He didn’t look back.

Amira’s message came at 3PM.

Amira: Xavier

Amira: Ashworth is on an administrative leave

Amira: Femi was taken in for questioning by university security this afternoon

Amira: the integrity board complaint against the project has been formally withdrawn

Amira: Xavier

Xavier: I know...

Amira: how long have you been planning this

Xavier thought about the phase 2 report. The phase 3 report. Patricia’s number filed away three weeks ago. The moment at the east gate when he’d read the first line of the security contact’s message and stopped walking.

Xavier: long enough.

A pause.

Amira: you’re terrifying you know that

Xavier: you’ve mentioned it.

Amira: I’m serious

Xavier: I know.

Another pause. Longer.

Amira: thank you. Again.

Xavier: stop thanking me.

Amira: stop doing things worth thanking you for then.

Xavier almost smiled at that.

Xavier: how’s the proposal submission going.

Amira: Xavier I just told you Femi got taken in for questioning and you’re asking about the proposal

Xavier: the proposal matters more than Femi.

A long pause.

Amira: submitted this morning actually. Before all of this happened.

Xavier: good.

Amira: Xavier

Xavier: Amira.

Amira: nothing. Never mind.

Xavier: say it.

Amira: I said never mind.

Xavier: Amira.

The longest pause yet.

Amira: I think I’m past mixed feelings entirely.

Xavier looked at that message for a moment.

He checked the gauge.

Amira — 91%

Four percent, he noted. From one afternoon.

Xavier: I know.

Amira: of course you do.

Amira: goodnight Xavier. It’s not even 4PM but goodnight.

Xavier: goodnight Amira.

He put his phone away and looked at the campus around him.

He put his phone away and looked at the campus around him.

Femi’s circle had scattered. The crowd near the east wall had dispersed. The campus was doing its ordinary late afternoon thing like nothing had shifted.

But things had shifted.

Ashworth was on administrative leave, innocent nigga he thought. Femi exposed. The Cardinal Circle’s institutional cover cracked open for the first time in fifteen years.

He pulled up his balance.

$272,023.

He looked at the EXP.

13,250 out of 50,000.

He looked at the calendar.

Sarah’s showcase.In Ten days.

One problem was handled. One mission still running.

He headed for the gate.

By the time he got back to his apartment the adrenaline of the afternoon had settled into something quieter. He changed out of his clothes, sat at his desk, opened the phase 3 report and stared at it for about four minutes without reading a single word.

Tired, he realised.

Not physically. Something deeper than that. The particular weight that came from running multiple operations simultaneously for weeks without stopping. Ashworth. Femi. The legal filing. The security reports. Amira’s project. Sarah’s showcase approaching.

In my previous life, he thought, stress meant a late delivery and a bad tip. He leaned back in the chair. Now it means dismantling a fifteen year criminal operation using a law firm and an encrypted security contact while managing two female targets and a university rebate cycle.

He almost laughed.

Different problems. Same feeling.

He closed the report. Pulled up his phone.

I need to decompress, he thought. Clear the head. Reset.

He opened WhatsApp before he’d fully decided to.

Xavier: Are you free tonight?

The response came back in under a minute.

Amira: depends

Xavier: on what

Amira: on where

Xavier: somewhere worth getting dressed for.

A pause.

Amira: how dressed

Xavier looked at that question and thought about the burgundy dress from the first concert night. The way she’d stood outside her hostel looking like a completely different version of the girl who sat beside him in Mrs. Adeyemi’s class with her textbook already open.

Xavier: the burgundy kind of dressed.

The pause that followed was longer than her usual ones. He could almost feel her deciding on the other end of the phone. Then...

Amira: Give me an hour.

Xavier booked The Meridian Grand before he even put his phone away. Same hotel. Top floor this time.

He showered, changed into dark trousers and a clean black shirt, checked himself in the mirror briefly.

Stressed an hour ago, he thought. Funny how fast that changes.

He ordered a premium Uber and left at 7:40.

The Meridian Grand lobby was quieter on a Wednesday evening than it had been on a Friday night. Softer lighting. Less traffic. The doorman nodded as Xavier walked in and he nodded back with the comfort of someone returning somewhere familiar.

He found a seat near the window and waited.

8:12PM.

She walked in.

In a Black gown this time. Not burgundy.

The fitted dress hugged her figure without looking like it was trying too hard, ending just above her knees. It accentuated her narrow waist and soft curves, giving her an effortless kind of elegance that was hard to ignore. Her hair fell freely around her shoulders, framing her face, while the contacts replaced her usual glasses. Small gold earrings caught the lobby light whenever she moved.

She looked polished, confident, and far more distracting than Xavier was prepared for.

She moved through the space with the quiet confidence of someone who had made a decision somewhere between his message and this lobby and wasn’t second guessing any part of it.

She spotted him and walked over.

Stopped.

Looked at him the way she sometimes did, reading something in his face that he hadn’t said out loud.

"Rough day?" she said.

"Not anymore," he smiled .

Something moved in her expression. Small. Settled.

"I booked the Top floor," he said.

"Of course," she replied.
