Days flew by like the wind.

One moment Xavier was watching Amira’s cab disappear down the street outside The Meridian Grand. The next he was standing in front of his wardrobe at 9PM on a Saturday night getting dressed for Sarah Torres’s showcase.

Interesting , he thought, pulling on the dark fitted trousers. Ashworth still on administrative leave. Femi quiet. Amira’s proposal sitting with Kenvale General awaiting response. Balance steady at $272,000 plus.

And Sarah Torres at 20% favorability.

He checked himself in the mirror. Dark trousers. Clean white shirt. Dark leather shoes. Present and correct without announcing it.

Tonight that number moves, he thought. For the first time.

He ordered a premium Uber and left at 9:40PM.

The Arts faculty amphitheatre was already alive when he arrived at 9:55pm.

More people than the midnight concert. Significantly more. Word about Sarah Torres had been building steadily across campus since that first night and tonight felt like the point where building became arrived. Students from every faculty, faces Xavier didn’t recognise from outside Riverside entirely, a proper crowd that had come with expectations.

The production level matched it. String lights but more of them. A larger elevated stage with professional lighting rigs that hadn’t come from the university equipment room. A proper sound setup. Someone had invested in tonight beyond what campus events normally budgeted for.

She put money into this one, Xavier noted. Her own or someone else’s. Either way she took it seriously.

He found the VIP section. Single ticket. Front centre.

He sat down.

The seat beside him was empty.

No Amira tonight, he thought.Toda’s for a different purpose.

He checked the gauge.

Sarah Torres — 20%

Still at 20, he noted. The café. The Instagram. The studio booking she doesn’t know was me. Eight weeks of deliberate proximity and not one point of movement. He looked at the stage. The gauge doesn’t move from presence alone. It needs something direct. Something she knows came from me.

Tonight.

The MC opened at 10PM sharp.

Two support acts. Xavier sat through them with patient attention. Watching the crowd more than the stage. Reading the room. The energy was different from the first concert. More anticipation. Less casual. People had come specifically tonight in a way that felt different from before.

She’s been building toward this, he thought. Quietly and deliberately. The same way I build things.

The MC returned to the mic.

"Last performance of the night. Arts faculty first year. She was here eight weeks ago and if you were there you’ve been waiting since. Sarah Torres."

The applause started before she reached the stage.

She came out differently this time.

No white dress. No loose hair. All black tonight. Wide leg trousers, a structured top, hair pulled back clean and severe. The contrast from the first concert was deliberate. Last time she’d arrived as something warm and accessible. Tonight she arrived as something serious.

The crowd felt the shift immediately. The applause changed quality. Less celebration. More attention.

Sarah stood at the mic and looked out at the room with the particular stillness of someone who had prepared for this moment specifically and was now simply in it.

She started with the piece.

Not the song. The piece she’d been struggling with for three weeks. The one that hadn’t been cooperating. The one she’d finally cracked in a studio someone had booked for her anonymously.

Xavier recognised it from the thirty second clip she’d posted on her story. But hearing it fully was different.

It was about wanting things without apology. About being told your ambition was too loud and deciding that the people saying it were simply not loud enough themselves. About the particular loneliness of being the most capable person in a room that keeps telling you to be smaller.

She performed it like she’d lived every line of it.

Because she had.

The amphitheatre was completely silent in a way that large crowds rarely are. Not the silence of people being polite. The silence of people being held.

Xavier sat completely still in the front row.

Arms relaxed. Expression neutral. Not recording on his phone like half the crowd. Not leaning forward. Not visibly moved.

Just watching.

Sarah was three minutes into the piece when she did what performers do. The slow deliberate scan of the crowd that connected her to the room.

Front row. Left side. Centre.

She hit Xavier.

A man sitting completely still while everyone around him was visibly affected. Not cold; just present in a different way from the rest of them. Like he was listening to something the others were only hearing.

She held it for a half second longer than the natural scan required.

Kept going.

But something in her delivery shifted almost imperceptibly for the next two lines. A slight adjustment. The particular recalibration of a performer who has been thrown off by something in the room and is deciding what to do about it.

There, Xavier thought. Same as last time. Half a beat.

Good.

She moved into the song after the piece.

Xavier had told her eight weeks ago that the song needed work. He’d been right then. He was less right now. Whatever she’d done in the studio had changed something in how she approached the material. Less performed. More inhabited.

He still didn’t take his phone out.

Around him people were recording, couples leaning together, someone near the back audibly emotional. The usual spread of a crowd being moved by something real.

Xavier watched Sarah’s face while she sang.

The control she maintained. The way she managed the emotion in the room without being consumed by it. The particular skill of someone who had learned how to give people what they needed without losing herself in the giving.
