Infinite Rebate System: Beautiful Women And Endless Returns
Chapter 36: Progress I guessSarah was genuinely talented, he thought. Not just popular. Actually talented.
But beneath that — beneath the stage presence and the voice and the calculated magnetism. There’s something else. Something that knows exactly what it is and has decided the world will bend around it rather than the other way around.
Not just ambition, he thought. Something colder than ambition. Something that in a different life looked him in the eye and walked away without flinching.
That’s the part I haven’t forgotten.
He filed that away separately from everything else.
The song ended.
The applause was immediate and loud and genuine. Sarah took her bow with the grace of someone who had expected this and was still grateful for it. She looked out at the crowd one more time with that smile.
Found Xavier’s table.
He was looking at his phone.
Not recording. Just looking at it. Like he’d checked something and was now putting it away.
She watched him pocket it and look back up at the stage with the same calm expression he’d been wearing all night.
The smile stayed but something behind it shifted.
Confused again, Xavier thought. Same as the first time. You just gave the best performance of your campus life and the one person you keep finding in the crowd is the one person who isn’t performing back at you.
Good.
Twenty minutes after the show ended Xavier was still at his table finishing his water when she appeared.
Alone this time. No friend behind her. She’d come directly.
She stopped at his table and looked at him.
"Well," she said.
"The piece was better than the song," Xavier said. "Both were good. The piece was better."
Sarah looked at him. "Most people are telling me both were perfect."
"Most people are telling you what you want to hear," he said. "The piece you wrote from something real. The song you wrote from something almost real. There’s a gap. Small. But it’s there."
She pulled out the chair across from him and sat down without being invited.
"You booked the studio," she said.
Xavier looked at her.
"I figured it out," she said. "It took me a while. The secondary account had no followers and no history but the DM came two hours after I posted the story about struggling with the piece. The only people who saw that story before I made it public were people I already follow." She held his gaze. "You follow me. You saw it within the first hour. The timing matched."
Smarter than I gave her credit for, Xavier thought. Or exactly as smart as I should have expected.
He said nothing.
"Why," she said.
"Because the piece needed the right environment," he said. "And the showcase was worth attending if the piece was finished properly."
Sarah looked at him for a long moment.
"You spent money on my showcase," she said slowly. "Anonymously. Without telling me. Without asking for anything back."
"Yes," he said.
"Why anonymously."
"Because if you knew it was me you wouldn’t have used it," he said. "You would have made it mean something it didn’t need to mean yet."
Yet, she caught it. He saw it in her eyes.
She looked at him across the table in the emptying amphitheatre with the particular expression of someone who had arrived at a conversation expecting one thing and found something entirely different waiting.
"Xavier," she said.
"Sarah," he replied.
She opened her mouth. Closed it. Then... "Come with me to the after gathering. The Arts faculty thing after shows. It’s small. People who were actually here."
Xavier looked at her for a moment.
Not a performance, he thought. She’s not inviting me to be seen with me. She’s inviting me because she wants me there.
Different.
"Okay," he agreed.
Something moved in her expression. Small. Surprised that he’d said yes simply without negotiating it.
He checked the gauge mentally.
Sarah Torres — 20%
Still 20, he noted. Even after the studio reveal.
Then it moved.
Sarah Torres — 28%
Eight percent, he thought. From one honest conversation and a revealed investment.
Finally.
He stood up and gestured toward the exit.
"Lead the way," he said.
Sarah Torres looked at him one more time with the expression he was starting to recognise. The one that said she hadn’t figured him out yet and was beginning to suspect she might actually want to.
She turned and led the way.
Xavier followed.
28%, he thought. Long way to 80.The system had been specific about that as a requirement for his main mission maybe because he wanted her to feel true despair same kind she broke Xavier in his previous life that was a conclusion he came at.
But we’re moving now.
The after gathering was held in a studio space on the second floor of the Arts building.
Not a party. Too small and too deliberate for that. Maybe thirty people in a room that fit forty comfortably. Soft lighting, someone’s playlist running low through a portable speaker, drinks on a table along the left wall. The particular atmosphere of creative people coming down from something that had gone well.
Xavier walked in beside Sarah and felt the room adjust.
Not dramatically. Just the subtle recalibration of a group of people registering a new element. Eyes that moved to Sarah first. She was the reason most of them were there and then moved to Xavier with the particular curiosity of people trying to place him.
Food and Nutrition..., he could almost hear them thinking. Not Arts. Who is he?
Sarah moved through the room with the ease of someone who had been the centre of these things before and was comfortable there. She stopped to receive compliments with genuine warmth, squeezed shoulders, and laughed at the right moments. The performance was off but the magnetism wasn’t.
Xavier stayed slightly behind her. Not attached. Just present.
Observe first, he thought. Always observe first.
Her inner circle emerged naturally within the first ten minutes.
The short girl with the loud laugh from the first concert her name was Temi, second year, the kind of person who made rooms warmer by existing in them. The tall girl with the phone Dana, quieter than she appeared, sharp eyes that assessed Xavier twice when she thought he wasn’t looking.
And a third person Xavier hadn’t seen before. A guy. Tall, relaxed, the particular ease of someone who had been around Sarah long enough to stop being impressed by her. He introduced himself as Jordan. Arts faculty second year. He shook Xavier’s hand with the firm grip of someone establishing something.
Friend or an interest , Xavier noted. Possibly both.
