Infinite Rebate System: Beautiful Women And Endless Returns
Chapter 52: A HundredThe notification came at 2:47AM.
Xavier felt the chime more than he heard it. The particular vibration of his phone on the nightstand that his brain registered without fully waking up. He reached for it with one arm, squinted at the screen in the dark.
Something from the system.
He couldn’t focus on it properly. His eyes weren’t cooperating and Sarah had shifted against him and the room was warm and the notification could wait.
He put the phone face down.
Tomorrow, he thought.
And slept.
He woke up at around 8:14AM.
The room was different in morning light. Warmer. More itself. The rough mix had long since finished playing and the speaker on the windowsill was silent. The city outside was already doing its morning thing. Distant traffic, the particular noise of a residential street waking up.
Sarah was still asleep.
Xavier lay still for a moment looking at the ceiling.
Her apartment, he thought. Her ceiling shined brightly as if made with marbles.
He turned his head slightly. She was on her side facing away from him, hair spread across the pillow, breathing with the complete unconscious ease of someone deeply out. The version of her that existed when nobody was watching, even him.
Different from the version she portrayed when outside , he thought.. He looked at her. This one I’ve only seen when she sleep calm more focused . Different from her usual more aggressive and selfish personality.
He reached for his phone carefully without disturbing her.
Opened it.
The notification from 2:47AM was still there.

Xavier read through everything twice.
Final stage, he thought. The Reckoning.
He looked at Sarah.
She was still asleep. Still breathing with that complete ease. Still completely unaware.
She trusts me, he thought. 100% favorability. Maximum Bond. She brought me to the community centre — the thing she keeps from everyone. She told me why she really performs. She called me at 10PM and sent her address and opened the door before I knocked. He looked at the ceiling. She trusts me completely.
And none of this, he thought. None of it. The community centre, the phone call, the door opening before I knocked. None of it she thought was worth doing for me in my previous life. He looked at her sleeping beside him. Eighteen months I gave her. Eighteen months of showing up, paying for things I couldn’t afford, accepting whatever version of her she felt like being that day. He looked at the ceiling. And she couldn’t even be bothered to open a door.
Funny how that works, he thought. Same woman. Different Xavier. Completely different story.
The old me would’ve called this winning, he thought. Called it enough.
But the old me is dead.
This isn’t winning, he thought. This is just the setup.
The Reckoning is still ahead.
And I’m going to use that.
He sat with that thought for a moment.
Not guilt. Not hesitation. Just clarity about what it was. What he was doing. What the endgame had always been since the day the system activated on a train platform and showed him a main quest with her name on it.
She destroyed your apartment, he reminded himself. Your savings. Your dignity. Your engagement and most of all my life. She walked out without looking back and left you with forty seven dollars and a broken heart and a train platform. He looked at the notification. This is the return on that investment. Everything that was taken comes back.
Different system now.
He closed the notification and lay back.
Sarah shifted beside him. The sheet moving. A small sound that wasn’t quite a word.
Xavier looked around.
The next major showcase, he thought. She mentioned it three weeks ago. A university wide Arts festival at the end of semester. The biggest platform she’ll have had so far. External press. Industry connections. The A&R consultant she met through the EP session has already expressed interest in attending.
The biggest night of her campus life, he thought. That’s the stage.
And I’m the reason it’s going to be the biggest night.
Everything she’s built toward this semester. The masterclass, the EP, the showcase pieces, the A&R connection. I made it possible. He turned that over quietly.
He almost smiled at the precision of it.
Poetic, he thought.
Sarah woke up at 9AM.
He heard it before he saw it. The change in her breathing, the small sound of someone surfacing. Then she turned over and found him already awake looking at the ceiling.
She looked at him for a moment.
"You’re awake," she said. Still half in sleep. Voice different at this hour lower, unguarded.
"Yes," he said.
"How long?," she asked.
"A while," he replied .
She looked at him with the morning expression that had no performance in it. Just her face at 9AM processing the fact of him being there.
"You stayed," she said.
"You said you didn’t want to be alone," he said.
She was quiet for a moment.
"I meant just for the night," she said. "Not necessarily until morning."
"I know," he said. "I stayed anyway."
She looked at him.
Something moved in her expression. Small. Settled.
"Okay," she said. Just that.
She sat up slowly, pushed her hair back, reached for her glasses on the nightstand. Contact out at some point in the night and put them on. Looked at the room with the particular inventory of someone taking stock of a morning that had arrived differently from how most mornings arrived.
