"I’m going to make coffee," Sarah said. "You want some."

"Yes," he replied .

She got up. He listened to her moving in the kitchen. The particular domestic sounds of someone in their own space. Cabinet opening, water running, the coffee maker starting its cycle.

He checked the gauge one more time.

Sarah Torres — 100% Bound.

Final stage active.

He looked at the corkboard above the desk. The handwritten lyrics. The printed notes. The two photos he hadn’t looked at properly last night.

He looked at them now.

One was Sarah and Temi at what looked like a campus event from earlier in the year. Both laughing at something. The easy uncalculated version of the laugh.

The other was Sarah alone. Younger. Sixteen maybe, seventeen. Standing at a microphone in what looked like a school auditorium. Expression on her face that he recognised immediately.

The one that needed people to see her.

She’s been doing this her whole life, he thought. Building toward being seen. He looked at the photo. And I’m going to use the biggest stage she’s ever stood on to make sure everyone sees something she never intended to show.

He thought about that for a moment longer than usual.

He pulled his eyes away from the photo.

Sarah came back with two mugs. Set one on the nightstand beside him and sat cross legged on the bed with hers. She looked at the corkboard.

"You were looking at the photos," she said.

"Yes..," he replied .

"The one on the right is from my first real performance," she said. "High school. I was sixteen. I was terrified."

"You don’t look terrified," he said.

"I was pretending," she said. "I’ve been pretending to be less terrified than I am since I was sixteen." She looked at the photo. "You’re the first person I’ve told that to."

First person, he thought.

He picked up his coffee.

She keeps making me think she’s giving me things nobody else gets, he thought. Keeps choosing me for the version underneath everything.

But let’s be real, he thought. I’m not the only one in her orbit. Never have been. Jordan at the after gathering. The way certain names come up in her stories without explanation. The particular ease of someone who has never had to go looking for attention because it’s always been available. He glanced at her. She’s not a saint. She’s Sarah Torres. She collects people the way she collects stages. Finds the ones that reflect her best and keeps them close.

I’m just the one who doesn’t reflect on her back, he thought. That’s why she keeps coming to me. Because I’m the only one in her circle who isn’t performing admiration at her. He looked at the ceiling. She thinks that means I stay. She thinks unbothered means loyal.

It doesn’t.

It just means I’m better at the game than everyone else she’s playing it with.

He looked at her one more time.

I’m just the best move she never saw coming.

He drank his coffee and looked at the city outside the window.

The Reckoning, he thought. Final stage active.

Patience, he thought. Is still the virtue I need.

But not for much longer.

Xavier left Sarah’s apartment at 9:47AM.

She’d been fully awake when he left. Sitting cross legged on the bed with her coffee and her glasses and her tablet already open. Back to herself, the morning version that was quieter and more internal than any other version of her.

She’d looked up when he stood to go.

"You don’t have to leave," she said.

"I have things to do," he replied.

She looked at him for a moment. The morning light. The glasses. The hair still loose from the night before.

"Okay," she said. Just that. No performance attached to it.

He picked up his jacket and his phone.

At the door he turned back once.

She was already looking at her tablet. But she glanced up when she felt him turn.

"Last night was good," she said.

"Yes," he replied.

Obviously, he thought. It was the best sex she’d ever given him. He knew that without needing confirmation. He almost smiled to himself walking down the corridor. For someone he’d spent eighteen months with in a previous life and never once felt like this. The difference was staggering he felt reborn.

He left.

The city was doing its ordinary Wednesday morning thing when he stepped outside. Early enough that the residential street was quiet. A woman walking a dog. Someone’s radio through an open window two floors up.

Xavier walked toward the main road and ordered a premium Uber.

He looked at that balance for a moment.

$550,000, he thought. Clean number.

He put the phone away and looked out the window as the city moved past.

Maximum Bond on both targets, he thought. Main quest final stage active. Everything in place. He watched a group of students cross at a light. Now it’s just execution.

He was back at his desk by 10:30.

He made coffee, sat down, opened a new note on his phone and started writing.

Arts festival- end of semester. University wide. External press confirmed. Victoria Hale attending. He wrote it out clean. Sarah’s biggest platform. The one everything this semester has been building toward.

The stage screen, he noted. That’s the delivery method. The message goes up on the screen during her performance. In front of everyone.

He thought about the mechanics of it.

I can’t be the one to arrange it directly, he thought. Too visible. Too traceable. He pulled up his contacts and found the number he needed. A tech contractor he’d identified three weeks ago. A freelance AV specialist who worked university events across Kenvale independently. No connection to Xavier visible anywhere.

He called.

The contractor picked up on the third ring.
