Xavier explained what he needed without explaining why. A stage screen display triggered at a specific point during a specific performance at the Arts festival. Timed. Precise. The content he’d provide separately closer to the date.

The contractor quoted a fee.

Xavier paid it without negotiating.

Clean, he thought. No direct connection. Untraceable.

He closed the call and leaned back.

One piece in place, he thought. Now the EP contract.

He called Patricia.

She answered immediately.

"The holding company contract for the Ardmore Recording EP package," he said. "I need to confirm the master ownership clause is airtight."

"It is," Patricia said. "Standard production co-ownership terms. The masters revert to the artist only upon full recoupment of production costs. Until then the holding company retains co-ownership rights."

"And the holding company is registered under..."

"A name with no visible connection to you," Patricia said. "As instructed."

"Good," Xavier said. "Keep it that way until I say otherwise."

"Understood," she said. "Xavier when this plays out, whoever is on the other end of that contract is going to need legal guidance navigating the recoupment terms."

"I know," Xavier said. "That’s the point."

Patricia was quiet for a moment. Not judging. Just noting.

"Anything else," she said.

"Not today," he said. And hung up.

His phone buzzed twenty minutes later.

Sarah.

@sarah.torres.official: Victoria Hale just confirmed she’s attending the festival. Xavier she’s actually coming.

Xavier looked at the message.

Victoria Hale, he thought. The A&R consultant from the upgraded session. The industry connection Sarah thinks came from nowhere. He looked at the message. She’s coming to the festival. Which means she’ll be in the room when the screen goes up.

Perfect, he thought. Couldn’t have planned it better.

He typed back.

Xavier: good. What are you performing.

@sarah.torres.official: the full EP set. Four songs. Ending with the piece from the showcase. Xavier I’m actually terrified.

Xavier: terrified is the right feeling. It means it matters.

@sarah.torres.official: you always say that

Xavier: because it’s always true.

@sarah.torres.official: are you coming

Xavier looked at that question for a moment.

Are you coming, he thought. She asks it the same way every time. Not desperate. Just assuming. Like it’s already established that I’ll be there.

Xavier: I wouldn’t miss it if I could.

@sarah.torres.official: 😊 okay. Good.

He put the phone down.

Wouldn’t miss it, he thought. I just won’t be there in the way you’re expecting.

He looked at his notes.

AV contractor confirmed, he wrote. EP contract airtight. Victoria Hale attending. Stage screen delivery arranged.

He looked at the list.

One thing remaining, he thought. The message itself.

He opened a new document on his phone.

Stared at the blank page for a moment.

What do you say, he thought. To the woman who cost you everything. On the biggest stage she’s ever stood on. In front of everyone that matters to her.

He thought about the apartment. The TV. The PS5. The $1,800 investment that disappeared. The engagement ring he’d saved three months of pizza delivery tips to buy.

He started typing.

The message came quickly. Cleanly. No second guessing. Just the truth laid out in two short paragraphs that said exactly what needed to be said and nothing more.

He read it back once.

That’s the one, he thought.

He saved it and closed the document.

Festival is four weeks away, he noted. Four weeks.

He picked up his coffee and looked out the window at the city.

Patience, he thought. One last time.

Then it ends.

_ _

Sarah was in the studio every day that week.

Xavier knew because she sent updates without being asked. Not long messages. Just quick ones. A voice note after session two saying the second track was coming together faster than the first. A photo of her handwritten notes spread across the studio floor at 11PM on a Thursday. A single message at midnight on Friday that just said four songs. actually four.

He responded selectively. Enough to stay present. Not enough to become available.

She’s in her element, he thought, reading the midnight message. This is what she looks like when she’s doing the thing she was built for.

He filed that away separately from everything else.

She called on Saturday afternoon.

"I want to talk about what happens after," she said when he answered.

"After what," he said.

"The EP. The festival. All of it." Her voice had the particular energy of someone who had been thinking about something for days and was finally ready to say it out loud. "I want to start thinking about distribution. Actually putting the music out. Not a campus project. Properly out. Streaming. Physical maybe."

"Talk to Victoria Hale," Xavier said.

"I am," she said. "We have a call next week. But Xavier..." a pause. "The EP. The masters. I need to make sure everything is in order before I start having those conversations. I don’t want to go into a meeting with an industry contact and not know exactly what I own."

Xavier was quiet for a moment.

What you own, he thought.

Interesting choice of words.

"Makes sense," he said. "You should know exactly what you’re working with before any distribution conversation."

"Right," she said. "So I was looking at the Ardmore booking confirmation they sent when the package was arranged and there’s a holding company listed as co-producer." A pause. "Do you know anything about that?"

Xavier looked at the ceiling.

She found it, he thought. Not all of it. Just the surface of it. The holding company name on the booking confirmation.

"Production packages at that level usually involve co-producer arrangements," he said. "Standard industry setup. It’s in the contract you signed when the package was confirmed."

"I signed a contract?" she said.

"The booking confirmation had terms attached," he said. "Standard studio agreement."

A pause.

"Xavier, I didn’t read that properly," she said. "I was so overwhelmed when I found out about the upgrade I just..." she stopped. "What does co-producer mean for the masters."
