Infinite Rebate System: Beautiful Women And Endless Returns
Chapter 9: Leveling upThe sales rep, young, enthusiastic, clearly on commission, lit up immediately.
"Excellent choice, that’s an iphone17 pro. Would you like to see the full range of—"
"No," Xavier said. "Just that phone, the golden colour variant. Whatever case you’d recommend for someone who’s hard on their things."
"Of course sir. Would you use your current device for trade in—"
"Yeah sure" Xavier pulled out his old phone and set it on the counter.
The rep looked at it with the expression of someone trying very hard to be professional.
Xavier looked at the rep.
"I know," Xavier said. She’s probably thinking that the phone that has been with me through thick and think had lost its value.
"No it’s completely fine, we can certainly—"
"Just tell me the number."
Forty dollars trade in. Xavier accepted it without emotion, not that he had any use for it. Forty dollars was forty dollars and the system would return eighty and that was the entire philosophy of his life now.

He stood outside setting up his new phone with the afternoon sun on his face and four bags of new clothes at his feet.
My remaining cap is $1,713, he noted. Not enough for anything meaningful. May as well finish it clean.
He pulled up a list of NGOs and donated the remaining $1,713 to a rural education fund without ceremony.

Xavier looked at the final number.
$20,502, he thought. From $11,702 this morning. From $520 three days ago.
He picked up his bags and headed for the cab rank.
A group of girls walked past and one of them glanced at the shopping bags, then at him, with the kind of look that registered and moved on.They might have seen him as a thief because he doesn’t look right.
Give it a week, Xavier thought, sliding into the back of a cab. Same bags. Different version of me wearing what’s in them. Watch how different that look gets.
He leaned back against the seat. Now the leveling up begins and I need to stack up some dough before my next appearance.
Not bad for a dead man.

Xavier woke up the next morning, looked at the ceiling for exactly ten seconds, and made two decisions.
Get a haircut.
Get a tattoo
Not in that order.
The haircut first, he corrected himself. Always sort the foundation before the statement.
He checked his balance.

He got up, showered, and opened his wardrobe.
The new wardrobe.
He stood in front of it for a moment with the quiet satisfaction of a man looking at something that represented a before and after. Yesterday morning he had a plain white tee and one pair of worn shoes. Now he had options.
He picked out dark fitted trousers and a simple black shirt, slid on the white clean sneakers, and checked himself in the small mirror on the back of the door.
Better, he thought. Not finished. But better.
Mama Elizabeth was in the kitchen when he came downstairs. She turned, looked at him properly for the first time since he’d arrived, and her expression did something complicated.
"You went shopping," she said.
"Observed," Xavier said.
She looked at the outfit. Then at his hair — still the same unstructured, slightly overgrown situation it had been since he woke up in this body.
"The clothes are nice," she said. "The hair needs help."
"I’m aware. That’s where I’m going." Damn this hag won’t let me be.
She nodded once with the satisfaction of someone whose opinion had been validated. "Hope you’ve eaten?."
"Yes" This time Xavier couldn’t keep composure, frowned his face hard and left.
The barbershop was on Clement Street, a clean, well-lit place with four chairs and the particular atmosphere of a barbershop that took itself seriously. Music playing at the right volume. The kind of place where people came in looking like one thing and left looking like another.
The barber who called him over was a large, quiet man named Ray who assessed Xavier’s hair with the expression of a surgeon reviewing an interesting case.
"What are we doing?" Ray asked, draping the cape around him.
"Clean it up," Xavier said. "Take it lower on the sides. Leave some length on top but structure it. I don’t want to look like I’m trying too hard."
Ray studied him in the mirror for a moment.
"You want to look like money without announcing it," he said.
Xavier looked at him. "Exactly". Seems this guy knows his stuff.
Ray nodded and picked up his clippers with the energy of a man who had just been given a problem worth solving.
Xavier sat and watched himself in the mirror as Ray worked, the clippers moving in clean, deliberate strokes. There was something meditative about a barbershop.
The low music. The focused silence of someone doing their job well and the soothing feeling of the clippers vibration.
In my previous life, he thought, I went to whoever was cheapest and told them just make it neat. Spent the bare minimum and wondered why I never felt put together.
Everything was like that, he realised. Minimum spend. Minimum effort. Minimum expectation. He watched the shape of his face emerge properly as the hair came down. No wonder Sarah looked at me and saw nothing worth keeping.
Ray switched to scissors for the top, combing and cutting with careful precision.
The old Xavier, he thought, spent his whole life making himself as small and affordable as possible and then wondered why the world treated him like a bargain bin item.
This time will be different.
Ray clicked his clippers off and stepped back.
Xavier looked at himself in the mirror.
The difference was not subtle. Same face, same features but structured now. The kind of haircut that made everything else fall into place. He looked exactly like what he was becoming someone worth looking at twice.
"Well?" Ray said.
"That’s the one," Xavier said.
Ray almost smiled.

Thirty five dollars, Xavier thought, stepping out onto the street. And I get seventy back.
I’m getting paid to get handsome. This is objectively the best system ever created.
He found the tattoo parlour three blocks from the barbershop, a place called Black Ink, clean and professional looking, the kind that had a portfolio on the wall rather than flash sheets.
A bell rang when he pushed the door open.
The artist behind the counter looked up. Mid thirties, arms covered, the particular unbothered energy of someone who was a guru in his job.
