Ch 117; The Dragon or The Egg

*Anos’s POV*

“Shoot! I forgot my notebook in the library.” Simon exclaimed, wiping the sleep from his face before rushing off.

“Don’t run in the hallway.” Anos shouted from behind him before continuing on his way back to Hagrid’s hut.

“When do you think it will hatch?” Harriet asked, holding onto her parchments of herbology homework for dear life, having taken 3 days to complete all of it.

“Maybe in like a day or two? I mean Big Roo is known for laying large eggs you know, maybe it can hatch today, maybe tomorrow or hells maybe the egg is a time traveling fetus that has already hatched in the past.” Anos replied, to the puzzlement of everyone near him who overheard.

“So, two days?” Harriet guessed.

“Yeah, two days sounds about right.” he agreed.

They had all taken to the egg’s existence by now and Simon and Lan despite themselves were more than willing to go and help him and Draco with it.

For all of Hagrid’s parental instincts the man had never stopped to consider immediate housing for the dragon; they now had a large cat bed in his hut with wool for padding; a place for the dragon to lounge.

Norwegian Ridgebacks did not enjoy rocky hard surfaces like most dragons, they were certainly not cave dwellers. Most liked to live around cliffs and such and lie in great pastures of grass or whatever flora was softer than their scales, which considering that they were dragons was most of any flora in existence.

It was their great fortune that Hagrid had not gotten any dragon species particularly inclined to breathing their flames, Auroras were known to shoot their flames just to be fascinated by the colors, so much so that most usually died in their own flames in old age in an act of pyromania, while some others ate literal ash and considered it a delicacy; those would’ve been more than happy to start turning Hagrid’s hut into their charred pantry.

For now they managed discreetly to help Hagrid, but it was proving to be a true challenge considering the amount of homework they were being subjected to; most teachers had decided to get the final pieces of the coursework done so the classes could move onto revision before exams.

Anos himself was having trouble with the names in Herbology and had taken Hermione’s help to prepare flashcards to quiz himself on the regular.

Simon to everyone’s surprise was doing rather well for the most part, which given his recent bout into books was somewhat understandable but it was still a bit jarring to see him sitting next to a window reading Potion methods while mumbling every hex and curse imaginable to every god he was aware of.

Everyone else was doing about as expected, though they were all more than a bit tired with the exception of Anos and Alucard who were slowly but surely becoming more amicable towards each other, with Anos asking Alucard for help regarding Magical Theory while helping with Potions in turn.

So for now, everything was going fine in Hogwarts, and that was exactly what had kept Anos worried. The whole normal thing was weird, the school was a safety hazard to everyone that resided in it and for a week the only major incident was a 5th year, breaking his nose on the railing in the Astronomy tower aside from the incident with the Dragon egg of course.

‘Maybe I’m worrying too much.’ Anos considered but immediately dismissed the idea; this was Hogwarts and there was a giant leech of a dark lord out to kill his best friend, he would not allow things to pass due to his negligence.

“You’re doing that thing again.” Harriet said, jabbing him in the side and breaking him from his reverie.

“What thing?” Anos asked, confused.

“ ‘The Stare’, the one where you look all funny into the distance as if someone's going to get stabbed or something.” Harriet explained matter of factly.

“Huh, so you guys make up names for me huh? Alucard put you up to it? Or Simon?” he asked in turn, smiling.

“Oh, you’ve been doing ‘The Stare’ ever since I have known you. Hermione just put it into the correct words.” Harriet replied.

“Hermione?” Anos asked, surprised as they walked into the Great Hall for lunch.

“What’s so surprising about that?”  Harriet asked, tilting her head.

“Nothing, I just thought evil nicknames were more your thing.” Anos answered.

“Hey!” Harriet shoved him lightly in mock offense.

“Oh come on, we all know you’re the evil witch, you give nicknames to people and steal chocolate from my stash.” Anos said, doing his best impression of being a distressed maiden.

“That was one time.” Harriet said huffing, biting into her food greedily.

It had actually been a pleasant surprise for Anos to see Harriet with 2 choco bar wrappers in one hand and a half eaten cookie in the other. He had always told her that she could take anything from his food pile even without asking but she never had, but finally the effects from living with the Dursleys seemed to be wearing off.

“Yes, you only did it once, and now I’m never going to let you live it down.” Anos replied with a grin.

They bantered for a bit before an owl swooped down low on the table in front of them.

Anos offered a piece of ham to the owl for its efforts and it preened happily before showing off his right paw, which had a note tied to it.

Harriet was looking over his shoulder to read it, it only had 2 words written in a hasty scrawl.

“It's hatching.”
