Lin Xueyi desperately tried to calm herself down, but the more she told herself not to think about it, the louder her thoughts became.

[Calm down, Lin Xueyi! It’s just one word!]

[One word! Wife! Wife! Wi—]

[STOP REPEATING IT!]

Rong Shuyan lowered his gaze to the bowl between them. For the first time, he found himself wishing he could temporarily stop hearing her thoughts.

Not because they bothered him, but because if she continued screaming like this, he wasn’t sure how long he could keep pretending that he wasn’t affected.

Especially when she sounded so happy simply because he had called her his wife.

"Xueyi," Rong Shuyan finally called.

"Yes?!" Lin Xueyi answered far too quickly.

"Your hand."

Lin Xueyi blinked before following his gaze. Only then did she realize that some of the medicine had spilled onto the back of her hand.

"Oh."

She immediately pulled her hand away and reached for the cloth beside the medicine bowl. She wiped her fingers first before hesitating and looking at Rong Shuyan’s hand.

There was medicine on his fingers as well.

"I’ll wipe it for you," she said.

Before Rong Shuyan could answer, Lin Xueyi had already taken his hand and carefully wiped away the medicine with the cloth.

Rong Shuyan stared at her lowered head. Her movements were completely natural, as though taking his hand and caring for him had already become something she was used to doing.

Meanwhile, her thoughts were still a complete mess.

[His fingers are so long.]

[Wait, why am I looking at his fingers?!]

[Just clean his hand!]

[Don’t think about anything strange!]

[He called me wife.]

[AHHH!]

Rong Shuyan closed his eyes briefly. Perhaps calling her wife had been a mistake, not because he regretted it, but because Lin Xueyi clearly wasn’t going to recover from it anytime soon.

After wiping away the last drop of medicine, Lin Xueyi quickly released his hand and placed the cloth aside.

"There. It’s clean," she said with a wide smile.

Rong Shuyan nodded. "Thank you."

"You’re welcome."

After several awkward seconds, Lin Xueyi suddenly remembered what she had been doing before everything went wrong.

"The medicine!" she exclaimed.

She quickly picked up the bowl again, although this time she held it much more carefully. "You still need to drink it before it gets cold."

Rong Shuyan reached out to take the bowl from her and Lin Xueyi stared at his hand suspiciously. "Your fingers aren’t numb anymore?"

Rong Shuyan shook his head. "They’re fine."

"Really?"

He hummed. "Yes."

Rong Shuyan calmly took the bowl from her before she could think about it any further.

He raised it to his lips and drank the medicine in several slow mouthfuls. The bitter taste immediately spread across his tongue, but his expression barely changed.

Lin Xueyi watched him closely. [That must taste awful.]

She glanced around the table before noticing a small plate of candied fruit that had been brought with the meal. She immediately picked up one piece and held it toward him.

"Here," she offered.

Rong Shuyan looked at the candied fruit before looking at her.

"It’ll get rid of the bitter taste," Lin Xueyi explained.

"I don’t need it," Rong Shuyan added calmly. "I’m already used to the bitterness."

Oh.

The smile on Lin Xueyi’s face slowly faded when she remembered just how long he had been taking medicine like this. However, she quickly pulled herself together and continued holding the candied fruit toward him.

"Even if you’re used to it, there’s nothing wrong with having something sweet afterward, right?" Lin Xueyi asked as her smile returned.

For some reason, that simple smile made Rong Shuyan’s heart feel warm.

In the end, he gave in and accepted the candied fruit. "Very well." He let out a soft sigh. "I’ll eat it."

After finishing the rest of his medicine, Rong Shuyan finally ate the candied fruit. His expression barely changed, but Lin Xueyi still noticed the slight way his brows relaxed as the sweetness washed away the bitter taste in his mouth.

Lin Xueyi didn’t say anything else, but seeing his expression relax, even just a little, somehow made her feel happy.

Not long after taking his medicine, Rong Shuyan naturally began to feel sleepy. Since he hadn’t been able to rest properly throughout the day, however, the medicine seemed to affect him twice as strongly as usual.

At first, Rong Shuyan tried to keep his eyes open. He blinked several times and even forced himself to sit a little straighter, but it didn’t last long.

His eyelids slowly fell shut, and a moment later, his head suddenly dropped forward.

Lin Xueyi immediately rushed forward and caught him before he could slip out of his wheelchair.

"Careful!"

She quickly stood up and walked around the table until she was directly in front of him. With both hands supporting him, she gently pushed his body back against the wheelchair.

"Your Highness, it’s dangerous to fall asleep so suddenly," Lin Xueyi whispered, keeping her voice low because she didn’t want to wake him.

Rong Shuyan didn’t respond. His breathing had already become slow and steady, making it clear that he had fallen deeply asleep.

Lin Xueyi watched him for a moment before carefully making sure he was sitting safely. Only then did she step outside the tent to find Eunuch Shen and ask him to help Rong Shuyan change his clothes and carry him to bed.

She would have been more than happy to take care of Rong Shuyan herself, but changing his clothes would be a little awkward when they had never even seen each other naked before.

More importantly, there was another problem.

[It’s not like I can carry him to bed anyway,] Lin Xueyi defended herself in her mind. [But... what if there comes a time when Eunuch Shen isn’t around and I need to carry him?]

She suddenly became serious. [Should I start lifting weights?]

While thinking about it, Lin Xueyi waited outside the tent until Eunuch Shen finished changing Rong Shuyan’s clothes and helping him into bed.

"Your Highness." Eunuch Shen finally stepped out of the tent after a while. "You can go back inside now. This servant has already taken care of His Highness."

Lin Xueyi turned toward him and gave him a warm smile. "Thank you, Eunuch Shen."

After that, it was Lin Xueyi’s turn to get ready for bed. Mei Lu helped her change into more comfortable clothes before leaving the tent.

Lin Xueyi was already exhausted from everything that had happened that day. The moment her head touched the pillow, it didn’t take long for her to fall asleep.

===

For the next three days, Lin Xueyi followed Physician Liu around and learned as much as she could about medicine. She also began spending more of her time inside the medical tent, watching how Physician Liu treated the wounded and helping whenever she could.

Even so, she couldn’t completely relax.

Rong Yunzhou and his soldiers were getting closer and closer to the Southern Wolf Tribe’s hidden path, and from what General Zhou had seen through the eagle’s eyes, it seemed they were planning to attack tonight.

The long-range soldiers had already been secretly sent out to support them. Unfortunately, several of them had been bitten by poisonous snakes while resting in the forest. Because they had to stop and deal with the injured soldiers, they would likely arrive at the hidden path several hours later than planned.

That news stressed Rong Shuyan a lot because he knew that Rong Yunzhou’s group wouldn’t have any backup for a while.

"Your Highness, perhaps we can scatter poison powder from the sky using the trained eagles," General Zhou suggested. "We’ve already tried controlling the birds from a distance before. If this general tries again, perhaps I can do it."

Rong Shuyan stared down at the military maps spread across the table, one hand pressed against his aching head. He had suffered from a terrible fever the night before, and although it had gone down by morning, the headache still hadn’t completely disappeared.

Even so, he kept his expression calm.

"It might work, but General Zhou, you already have trouble maintaining your vision through the eagles," Rong Shuyan reminded him. "If you try to control an eagle at the same time and fail, we might lose our vision completely."

After all, controlling the eagle would certainly consume a lot of his spiritual energy, and if he failed, the consequences would be even worse.

"We cannot lose our vision," Rong Shuyan mumbled to himself.

Without the eagle, they would have no way of knowing what was happening around the hidden path from this distance.

He could ask another soldier to try controlling one of the eagles, but learning how to do it would take time they didn’t have. Even if someone tried immediately, the chance of succeeding was very small.

"Your Highness, we will lose a lot of soldiers if we don’t provide them with additional support," General Zhou reminded him. "It would be a great loss for our side."
