Lin Xueyi immediately loosened her grip on the pestle and looked down at her hand. Only then did she realize how tightly she had been holding it. Her palm had already turned red from the pressure.

"I’m fine," she said in a low voice.

[No, I’m not fine.]

[I’m angry!]

Rong Shuyan almost sighed when he heard her thoughts. He already knew she was angry, but what he didn’t understand was why she seemed even more upset about what had happened than he was.

He moved his wheelchair closer to the table and reached for her hand. Lin Xueyi looked surprised when he gently turned her palm upward and there were several red marks across her skin.

"Does this look fine to you?" Rong Shuyan asked.

Lin Xueyi pressed her lips into a thin line. "It doesn’t hurt."

[Not as much as watching everyone ignore you.]

Rong Shuyan’s fingers paused against her palm.

He had spent years getting used to people looking down on him. Ever since he lost the use of his legs and his military authority was taken away, there had been countless moments when people dismissed his words simply because they no longer believed he had the right to command them.

Even now, he had thought he was used to it, yet hearing Lin Xueyi become so angry on his behalf made something uncomfortable tighten inside his chest.

"Are you angry because of General Zhou?" Rong Shuyan asked.

Lin Xueyi immediately looked at him. "How did you know?"

Rong Shuyan remained calm as he said, "Most of the physicians were called over to help him. It wasn’t difficult to guess."

"Oh." Lin Xueyi lowered her gaze again. "It’s just... this consort thinks General Zhou is being reckless."

"I agree," Rong Shuyan replied without hesitation. "But he’s the one in charge of these troops, so there’s nothing we can do to stop him."

Lin Xueyi let out a soft sigh. She looked down at the medicinal herbs in front of her before saying, "That’s exactly why... I think we should run away from this place now, Your Highness."

She gestured toward the herbs she had been grinding. "See? I’m already trying to prepare as much medicine as I can for you. It should at least last until winter is over, and after that, we can find a way to buy more medicinal herbs."

Rong Shuyan didn’t say anything for a while. His gaze moved from Lin Xueyi to the piles of medicinal herbs beside her.

In the end, Rong Shuyan said, "Xueyi, I don’t think it’s possible for me to run away right now."

Lin Xueyi’s eyes immediately widened. "But Your Highness, you promised me that we would run away together if the situation was no longer in our favor!"

"I did make that promise." Rong Shuyan nodded. "But Xueyi, I’m the main person the Southern Wolf Tribe is after. If something happens to General Zhou and the person leading these troops disappears as well, the entire border could fall into chaos."

Lin Xueyi’s expression slowly became serious.

"The Southern Wolf Tribe might eventually break through the border and enter the Empire," Rong Shuyan continued. "If that happens, it won’t matter how far we run. As long as we’re still somewhere inside the Empire, they could eventually find us."

Lin Xueyi bit her lower lip. She understood what he meant, but she still didn’t want to give up so easily.

After thinking for a moment, she crouched down in front of Rong Shuyan’s wheelchair so she could look at him more closely.

"What if we leave the Empire?" Lin Xueyi asked. "I know... I think I know a route we can take."

Rong Shuyan fell silent and for a brief moment, Lin Xueyi thought he might actually consider it.

Instead, Rong Shuyan slowly reached out and touched a strand of her long hair.

"Xueyi," he said in a low voice, "my body wouldn’t survive a journey out of the Empire."

Lin Xueyi froze in place. The hope in her eyes immediately faded, and Rong Shuyan hated seeing it disappear.

However, he was only telling her the truth.

Even if they managed to escape from the border without anyone stopping them, the journey out of the Empire would be long and difficult. Winter was also getting closer, which would only make traveling more dangerous.

His body had barely been able to handle the journey to the border. There was no telling what would happen if he forced himself to travel even farther.

More than that, Rong Shuyan couldn’t be sure that the lands outside the Empire would be any safer.

His fingers slowly tightened around the strand of her hair.

He hated this.

He hated knowing that there might be a way for them to escape, only for his own body to become the thing holding them back.

Rong Shuyan silently gritted his teeth. If he still had a healthy body, things would have been different.

He could have taken Lin Xueyi away from the Empire himself. No matter how long the journey was or how dangerous the road became, he would have found a way to protect her and make sure she survived.

Unfortunately, he could no longer do that.

With this broken body, Lin Xueyi would probably have to be the one protecting him instead.

"I can give you a chance to escape from here instead," Rong Shuyan said.

"No!" Lin Xueyi immediately protested. "We’ve already talked about this before. Even if I go back to the capital and become a widow, there’s no guarantee that I’ll actually be safe."

She closed her eyes for a moment, trying to gather her courage before looking at him again.

"Your Highness, if you decide to stay here, then I’ll stay with you." Her voice became more serious. "If you die on this battlefield, then I’ll follow you to the afterlife."

The words sounded brave when they left her mouth, but her thoughts immediately betrayed her.

[Follow him to the afterlife? Lin Xueyi, have you completely lost your mind?!]

[What if I die from lingchi instead? Or get shot by an arrow? What about getting beheaded?]

Her face slowly paled. [Dismembered?!]

[Which one hurts the least?!]

Rong Shuyan stared at her quietly. He had heard her brave declaration, but he had also heard every frightened thought that followed it.

She was afraid of dying. Of course she was, yet despite that fear, she still wanted to stay with him.

"I promised that I would bring you home alive," Rong Shuyan finally said. His voice was calm, but there was no hesitation in it.

"As long as I’m still alive, I won’t stop trying to keep that promise." Rong Shuyan looked directly into her eyes. "So don’t worry, my wife. This won’t be my last war."
