"Fuck! Little shit saw us!"

He whispered the curse under his breath and immediately grabbed Lira by the wrist.

*Dash.*

"Kyle-"

"We are running!"

Kyle didn’t waste any time. He instantly turned around and broke into a run, pulling Lira with him. He knew he wasn’t strong enough to overpower five delinquents at once, especially not when he had someone else to protect. Whatever confidence he had gained from dealing with that crooked bastard before, this wasn’t the same situation.

"What the fuck are you doing? That must be our bitch! It’s about goddamn time! Go catch them!" the crooked-faced bastard barked at his subordinates.

He hadn’t clearly seen who was hiding around the corner, but he was almost certain it was Lira. He had been following her schedule for a while, watching her movements and slowly figuring out her patterns. He knew the routes she usually took, when she left work, and roughly when she would return home. He instinctively knew that it was her.

"I’m going to rip that bitch’s innocence!" he shouted with a disgusting, filthy grin.

*Steps.*

All of his cronies, including the crooked bastard himself, immediately started running after them.

Then his eyes widened when he noticed the man running beside her.

"Yes! It’s my lucky fucking day! It’s both of them!" the crooked bastard roared as he chased after them, his excitement growing when he finally realized it wasn’t some random person he had spotted.

It was Lira—and, even better for him, the bastard who had humiliated him at the store was with her.

Kyle could hear their footsteps rapidly approaching from behind.

"How are they catching up so quickly?" he muttered through clenched teeth, clicking his tongue in frustration.

He kept running while holding tightly onto Lira’s hand. They had started with around a hundred and fifty meters of lead, which Kyle had initially thought would be enough to give them some time. But the bastards behind them were fast. Far faster than he had expected. The distance that had separated them only moments ago was already shrinking.

"Stop, you son of bitches, if you want any mercy!" the bald-headed crony yelled as he increased his pace.

Kyle ignored him.

’As if stopping is going to get us mercy. That bastard wants revenge’

His legs kept moving, his breathing becoming heavier as he pushed himself harder. He didn’t dare slow down. The empty road stretched ahead of them, illuminated by scattered streetlights, but there was barely anyone around. No crowd they could disappear into, no nearby police officer, no convenient escape.

"Lira... call the police, fast!"

"My phone’s dead!" she replied instantly.

"Shit!"

Kyle’s heart sank.

He had thought their lead would at least give them enough time to make a rescue call. Even thirty seconds would have been useful. But after spending the entire day outside, using their phones for directions, taking pictures, checking things, and everything else, neither of them had any battery left.

Both phones were completely dead.

So there was only one thing they could do.

Run.

They kept moving straight ahead, their footsteps pounding against the pavement as the gang behind them continued gaining ground.

"Run, you motherfuckers! Run! How far do you think the bitch and her dog can run?" the crooked-faced bastard shouted.

Kyle’s jaw tightened when he heard that.

’Dog?’

He wanted nothing more than to turn around and smash that bastard’s face into the pavement again, but he couldn’t. Not now. If he stopped, Lira would be left exposed, and that was something he couldn’t allow. Also, he just can’t deal with four of his rats even if he knocked out the crooked bastard in a single punch.

The gap between them continued shrinking.

One hundred and fifty meters.

Then barely one hundred.

And the crooked bastard wasn’t the only one catching up. His cronies were closing the distance as well, their footsteps growing louder behind Kyle with every passing second.

"Kyle..."

Lira’s voice suddenly sounded weak.

"I’m sorry. I’m slowing you down."

Kyle glanced at her while continuing to run.

Her face was flushed, her breathing had become noticeably shallower, and her steps were beginning to stumble. She was trying her best to maintain the pace, but her legs were gradually losing strength. Her excessive smoking was finally showing its effect, and unlike Kyle, she simply wasn’t accustomed to running at full speed for this long.

"Stop."

"I—"

"The last thing I want to hear from you is you saying sorry, Lira."

His voice was filled with anger, but the anger wasn’t directed at her. It was frustration at the situation, at the bastards behind them, at their dead phones, and at the fact that there seemed to be no easy way out.

He tightened his grip around her hand and moved closer, supporting her weight whenever her steps became unsteady.

"Just tell me where the nearest police station is," he said between breaths. "We’ll run there."

Lira struggled to breathe as she answered, "It’s... at least three kilometers from here."

Kyle’s eyes widened.

"Three kilometers?"

She nodded while desperately trying to maintain her pace.

"Fuck! Why are all the odds suddenly against us?"

His voice cracked with frustration.

Their phones were dead. The police station was several kilometers away. Lira was getting slower by the minute, and Kyle could already feel his own body beginning to protest. His lungs burned with every breath, his legs were becoming heavier, and the muscles in his body were screaming at him to stop.

But stopping wasn’t an option.

*Fuck... what the fuck am I supposed to do?*

His mind raced desperately for an answer.

*Think.*

There had to be something.

An alley, crowded road, shop that was still open or even a security guard.

Anything.

But nothing immediately appeared.

They continued running blindly down the road, Kyle supporting Lira as much as he could while still keeping his own pace. Every few seconds he glanced over his shoulder, hoping the distance had stopped shrinking.

It hadn’t.

The footsteps behind them were becoming louder.

Much louder.

Kyle looked back again.

His stomach dropped.

The crooked-faced bastard was leaving some of his cronies behind.

His speed had actually increased.

The distance that had taken him from one hundred and fifty meters to one hundred seemed to disappear far faster than Kyle had expected. Now the bastard was only around fifty meters away, and he was still coming.

"Getting slower already?" the crooked bastard shouted, laughing as he ran. "It was just getting fun!"

Kyle immediately turned his head forward.

’Fuck.’

His heartbeat thundered in his ears.

Fifty meters.

That was all.

And it was shrinking.

Lira stumbled again, nearly losing her balance, and Kyle caught her before she fell.

"I can keep going," she gasped.

"I know."

Kyle tightened his grip around her hand.

He didn’t know how much longer either of them could keep running, but one thing was certain.

He wasn’t going to let those bastards catch her.

’System!!’

"Do the fucking gacha!"
