’Pull the fucking random skill card and spin it right now!’
Kyle ordered the system while running from the crooks, his lungs burning as he desperately tried to maintain his pace.
[You have used ’Random Skill Card ×1’.]
Tring!
A gacha-like wheel appeared right in front of him and began spinning rapidly. The metallic sound of the wheel’s pin striking against the rewards echoed directly inside his head, each ting becoming more irritating than the last as he sprinted for his life.
’Stop this fucking sound and spin! Just show me what I got! I need that shit right now!’
The sound effects and flashy animation immediately ceased.
Kyle’s eyes widened when he saw the result.
’Fucking hell... I hope it’s a combat skill.’
For the first time since the chase had begun, a sliver of hope appeared in his mind.
’Even if it’s some shit grade, anything is better than nothing right now.’
[Congratulations, User! You have unlocked the skill ’Silk Touch (Uncommon)’!]
A system window appeared before him in the familiar card-like format, displaying the skill’s name along with its description.
[Silk Touch Lv.1 — Uncommon]
[Description: Infuses the user’s touch with a soothing effect that instantly relaxes the target’s muscles, briefly impairing their ability to move. The target enters a calm state for a few seconds. The effect may be weakened or resisted by targets with greater physical or mental resistance.]
[Note: The skill can only be initiated through contact with the user’s hand or palm and requires physical contact of 0.3 seconds or longer.]
[Effect: Briefly induces muscular relaxation and impairs movement.]
[Cost: 1 EP / 0.5 Mana per use]
[Maximum Uses: 15]
[Cooldown: 24 Hours]
Kyle’s expression immediately collapsed.
’The fuck?! What the fuck am I supposed to do with this skill?!’
He was expecting something that could actually help him in combat—a boost to his strength, increased speed, some kind of offensive ability, anything. Instead, the system had handed him a skill whose entire purpose seemed to be making someone’s muscles relax.
’Help with relaxing their muscles? What the hell am I, some masseuse girl from Thailand?!’
His frustration nearly boiled over.
Yet his eyes suddenly returned to one particular line in the description.
"Hold on..."
He continued running while reading the description again.
"What does it mean by entering a calm state for a few seconds?"
His eyes narrowed.
"Does it render them immobile?"
The possibility suddenly occurred to him.
If the skill could actually interfere with their ability to move, then perhaps it wasn’t completely useless. It might not knock someone unconscious or deal damage, but if he could temporarily prevent one of them from moving, that could be enough to turn the situation around.
’I can’t know anything without trying.’
Kyle swallowed hard.
’May God bless me.’
If his interpretation of the skill was correct, then this useless-looking ability might actually have a stun-like effect. But if he was wrong...
He glanced at the group of delinquents behind him.
’Then I’m getting hospitalized at the very least.’
And if things went even worse, he might not walk away from this at all.
Neither would Lira. He was more about her than himself because he knew he his intention from the day he visited the store. He really regretted not killing him that day.
[Congratulations, User! To celebrate the unlocking of your first skill, you have been gifted 3× additional uses of the following skill, for a total of 45 uses without consuming EP (Energy Points) or Mana.]
Another small system window appeared directly in front of him.
[Maximum Uses: 45]
Kyle stared at it for a moment.
’A good news finally.’
Despite everything happening around him, he couldn’t help but feel slightly reassured. At least he wouldn’t have to worry about running out of uses if the skill actually worked the way he hoped it did.
Now he just had to survive long enough to find out.
"Argh!"
Lira suddenly cried out beside him.
Thud!
Her legs finally gave out beneath her, and she fell face-first onto the concrete.
"Lira—!"
Kyle instinctively stopped and turned toward her, but before he could even reach her, one of the crooks lunged at him.
*Whoosh!*
Kyle’s body moved before his mind could fully process what was happening.
*Duck!*
The attacker swung and tried to tackle him, but Kyle slipped to the side at the last possible moment.
The crook’s momentum carried him forward.
*Thud!*
The chunky bastard crashed onto the ground and rolled several times before coming to a stop.
Kyle stared at him for half a second before spitting onto the ground.
"Fuck hell, you son of bitches! Can’t you see I’m talking to my girl?"
His adrenaline was surging through his veins now.
He quickly turned toward Lira and noticed blood trickling from her nose after the fall.
"Clean your nosebleed."
Kyle pulled out his handkerchief and tossed it toward her.
Lira caught it without much thought and immediately pressed it against her nose.
Kyle stepped between her and the approaching delinquents.
"And I will make sure these bastards can’t touch even an atom of your body."
He cracked his knuckles.
The worried expression that had occupied his face during the chase was gone. His jaw tightened, his teeth visibly gritting as a vein bulged slightly on his forehead. The adrenaline pumping through his body drowned out much of the exhaustion that had been slowing him down moments ago.
Since, there was nowhere left to run.
So there was only one thing left.
Fight.
Kyle lowered his stance and stared directly at the men surrounding them.
’If I can’t escape... then I’ll beat them.’
And if he couldn’t beat them—
’I’ll die trying.’
"Finally!" the crooked-faced bastard sneered.
"The bitch and her dog are caught. After all, how far could you even run?"
His voice was filled with disgusting arrogance, saliva flying from his mouth as he spoke. One of his hands was still covered in plaster, and he held that injured hand carefully against his body.
Kyle’s eyes immediately went to the plaster.
Still injured.
A small grin appeared on his face.
The crooked bastard noticed it and frowned.
Meanwhile, the other cronies spread themselves around Kyle and Lira, forming a loose circle. They positioned themselves carefully, making sure there was no obvious path for either of them to escape.
Lira tried to push herself off the ground.
"Kyle, leave—!"
She couldn’t finish.
Pain shot through her knees and thighs, forcing her back down. Her body refused to cooperate no matter how hard she tried to move.
"Kyle..."
She looked at him anxiously.
Kyle didn’t turn around.
"Don’t worry, Lira."
His voice was calm now.
Much calmer than it had been during the chase.
He stared directly into the eyes of the crooked-faced bastard standing across from him.
"I’m more of a man than all these son of bitches combined."
The bastard’s expression darkened.
Kyle slowly raised his fists.
"And this time..."
His knuckles cracked again.
"...I’m going to make damn sure I fracture that bastard’s skull too."
