Invincible through Touching Corpses
Chapter 577 - 574: Arrival and ArrangementsWhen Little Fatty heard that Lin Xinghai actually held the rank of Major, his eyes instantly lit up.
"Boss, you’re on track to become an officer right after graduation! You have to look out for me then and get me a spot in your unit," Little Fatty said with a fawning smile.
A rank like Major was already quite high in the military. In terms of actual authority, it was enough to be a battalion commander at least. With the right connections, it was even possible to hold the position of a deputy regiment commander.
"We’ll see. It’s not like I’ll be given command of troops the moment I graduate. It all depends on the Military Department’s arrangements. But pulling you into my unit shouldn’t be a problem—assuming your old man doesn’t object, of course." As he spoke, Lin Xinghai gave Little Fatty a knowing look.
"Heh heh, why would the old man object? He’s more obsessed with power than money. He definitely won’t be against me joining the army, as long as I’m not just some grunt," Little Fatty chuckled.
Lin Xinghai just smiled and said no more. ’Even if Little Fatty hadn’t brought it up, I’d want to tie a moneybags like him to my squad. That way, I could handle things like upgrading our military equipment myself.’
Soon, the group moved on from the topic. They spread out a map and began discussing how to proceed with the upcoming mission.
...
Only one city separated Shakou City from the East Sea Base. The straight-line distance was just over 200 kilometers. By traveling at full speed, the convoy took just over an hour to approach its destination.
Of course, this was at Lin Xinghai’s request. He had chosen missions that were closer, even if the pay was lower. He had no desire to waste time on pointless travel.
"If we follow this street into the city proper and go for about another five kilometers, we should reach the temporary outpost set up by the Shakou Shelter. Should I contact them with the long-range equipment now?" Little Fatty asked, looking at the map and then at Lin Xinghai.
"Yes, contact them first. We need to avoid any misunderstandings," Lin Xinghai nodded.
Little Fatty immediately ordered someone to do so, while the convoy continued to press forward. The road here had obviously been cleared; there were only a few scattered Zombies and no obstacles. With their vehicles at full speed, they could see the temporary outpost in the distance after just a few minutes.
Beyond that, the group could faintly hear sporadic gunfire in the distance. It was obvious this temporary outpost had only just been established and hadn’t even finished clearing out the nearby Zombies.
After a smooth approach, the group immediately slowed down and, under the guidance of the stationed soldiers, drove slowly into the outpost.
At that moment, the officer in charge of the outpost, Ji Qirong, having heard the news, immediately came out with his men to welcome them.
East Sea Academy had a certain prestige in this regard. After all, 80% of its graduates could reach the Body Shaping Realm, which would absolutely be considered powerful experts in any ordinary Shelter.
Even students who hadn’t graduated yet could be considered future powerhouses, so it wasn’t at all strange for them to receive a high-level reception.
Initially, Ji Qirong had assumed this team would be much like the previous ones. He had planned to just greet them briefly before immediately returning to coordinate the cleanup operation.
However, as the fleet of Armored Vehicles rolled into the outpost, he felt a jolt. It wasn’t just him; every soldier who saw the convoy understood that this team was far from ordinary.
Putting aside everything else, the web of firepower formed by these 10 Armored Vehicles alone could probably rival that of their entire temporary outpost.
And for a squad to be able to field such a convoy... you didn’t need to be a genius to know they were exceptionally strong.
Ji Qirong’s first thought was even, ’Did the Military Department increase the mission reward to attract one of the powerful teams from East Sea Academy?’
But he dismissed the thought as soon as it crossed his mind. ’That wouldn’t be cost-effective. Rather than inviting one powerful team, it would be much better to post several smaller missions and attract more Low Level teams.’
Of course, regardless of the reason, the moment the convoy came to a halt and people started disembarking, he immediately led his adjutant forward to greet them.
"Thank you all for coming to provide support. I’m Ji Qirong, the temporary commander of this outpost. To have a powerful team such as yours here truly honors us!" Ji Qirong said with a broad smile, extending both hands.
"You’re too kind, Major Ji. Mutual support is only natural, and besides, we’re also getting paid for this mission," Lin Xinghai replied politely, shaking the man’s outstretched hand.
Seeing Lin Xinghai’s attitude, Ji Qirong felt much more at ease. He quickly asked, "By the way, how should I address you? And for this Zombie-clearing mission, is there any coordination you’ll need from our side of the military?"
"My name is Lin Xinghai. You can just call me Xiaohai. Regarding the Zombie-clearing operation, we actually have our own plan. However, we’ll need to confirm your arrangements first to avoid getting in each other’s way," Lin Xinghai said.
Hearing the name Lin Xinghai, Ji Qirong felt it sounded familiar. After a moment’s thought, he exclaimed in astonishment, "You’re *the* Lin Xinghai? The peerless genius who broke East Sea Academy’s records in just two months to take the number one spot on the Hero Ranking?"
"Ahem! ’Peerless’ is a bit much," Lin Xinghai said with a light cough. He hadn’t expected his reputation to have spread all the way to the Shakou Shelter in such a short time.
After confirming it was really him, Ji Qirong became even more courteous, quickly ushering Lin Xinghai and his group into a conference room.
"This is our operational plan," Ji Qirong said, bringing up an electronic map and explaining their current strategy to Lin Xinghai. "This entire sector is our target. We’ve divided it into 20 zones. We have already cleared five of them and are currently pushing into Zone 6."
None of this was a secret, so there was no reason not to share it. Furthermore, students from East Sea Academy were considered semi-military personnel, so Ji Qirong felt no hesitation discussing these matters.
Lin Xinghai stared at the digital map for a moment, then pointed to the red dots in Zones 7, 8, and 9. "May I ask what these red dots represent?" he inquired.
"Those are the positions of the other squads from your academy. For the sake of efficiency, they chose not to operate alongside our Military Department units and are working separately."
"Of course, as a precaution, they aren’t too far from our main force. If they run into any trouble, we can reach them and provide support within ten minutes," Ji Qirong said.
Lin Xinghai nodded, then stated his own request. "In that case, I’d like to request that Zones 10 through 20 be assigned to my Xinghai Squad."
"While we’re operating, please try not to enter our assigned area. If you must come in, please contact us beforehand. We wouldn’t want to cause any danger to your people."
