Staring at the red dots that kept popping up on the Zombie Detector, everyone, including Lu Ping, had the same first reaction: the device was broken.
Otherwise, how could there be hundreds of Mutated Zombies on the outskirts of the city? Even a hundred High Level Zombies would be an incredibly rare sight.
What’s more, the red dots on the Zombie Detector were multiplying frantically. Every second, ten or even dozens more appeared.
Within seconds, the number of Mutated Zombies detected on the device jumped from one hundred to two hundred, then three hundred, four hundred.
They had traveled less than a kilometer down the main road when the number on the Zombie Detector leaped to five hundred.
"Something’s not right! Something major must have happened up ahead. Even if the Zombie Detector is broken and it’s just detecting High Level Zombies, for so many to be gathered together, something must be going on," Lu Ping said with a grave expression.
The rest of the squad looked just as grim.
"So, Captain Lu, what do we do now?" someone asked nervously.
Forget over five hundred Mutated Zombies—even five hundred High Level Zombies would give their Mercenary Corps a world of trouble.
Lu Ping’s brow furrowed, and he gave a decisive order. "Let’s not be suicidal. We’re pulling back immediately. We’ll return to the Shelter and report this to the Military Department."
"Wait, don’t we have another detector? Let’s leave it here. It might gather some intel for the military when they arrive."
The others breathed a quiet sigh of relief. Honestly, staring at the frantically blaring Zombie Detector had left them terrified.
In fact, everyone shared an even more terrifying thought: ’What if the Zombie Detector isn’t broken...?’
They didn’t dare dwell on the horrifying implications.
On Lu Ping’s command, the convoy quickly sped off in the opposite direction.
To their horror, they soon realized they were too late. The red dots were rapidly fanning out.
Already, more than fifty red dots were heading their way, and they were moving significantly faster than their Armored Vehicle.
"What’s going on? High Level Zombies shouldn’t be this fast!" an old Mercenary exclaimed, his skin crawling as he stared at the red dots on the Zombie Detector.
"Maybe a Spitter gathered a horde of High Level Zombies and drove them into a frenzy. That’s the only way they could be this fast," another Mercenary offered with a strained laugh, trying to come up with a plausible explanation.
But this did little to quell their growing unease. As the red dots closed in, that unease turned to outright terror.
Seeing this, Lu Ping took a deep breath. "Activate the Mecha. I’m staying behind to see what exactly is chasing us."
The others’ eyes widened in disbelief.
"Captain Lu, that’s too dangerous," someone said immediately.
"I know, but at their speed, we can’t escape. I’ll stay here in the Mecha. If it’s really High Level Zombies, I’ll deal with them and catch up. But if it’s..."
He paused, not daring to voice his suspicion. Instead, he continued, "If it’s some other overwhelming threat, I’ll use the Micro Missiles to attack from a distance, draw their attention, and lead them away in another direction."
A few of them opened their mouths, wanting to argue, but one look at the advancing red dots made them fall silent. Their only hope now was Lu Ping.
"Be careful, Captain Lu."
"Let’s not freak ourselves out. It’s probably just a bunch of frenzied High Level Zombies. The Captain will make it back safely."
"Yeah, and even if it is dangerous, without us holding him back, Captain Lu’s chances of getting away safely are higher."
As the others chattered nervously, Lu Ping settled into the cockpit of the waiting Mecha. He ran a system self-check. Once everything came back normal, he piloted the Mecha in a single, light leap out of the open cargo bay.
He didn’t charge recklessly toward the red dots. Instead, he took out a dozen directional mines and quickly planted them in the road.
Then, he pulled up the digital map and began simulating one escape route after another in his mind.
’In fact, he was already preparing for the worst. If the Zombie Detector wasn’t broken, he’d have to figure out how to escape from over fifty Mutated Zombies.’
As the red dots on the map closed to within two kilometers, Lu Ping quickly adjusted his Mecha’s optical scope and peered down the far end of the street.
This location was relatively clear of obstacles, so he’d be able to spot any Mutated Zombies the moment they appeared.
Then he saw a monster appear in his sights, one as tall as a three-story building and covered in a thick, keratinous hide. The sharp claws on its hands were five meters long.
Lu Ping’s pupils constricted. He couldn’t possibly mistake a Death Claw—a king among Mutated Zombies.
Before he could react, one Mutated Zombie after another came into view: Giant Arms, Armored Corpses, Hunters, Spitters, Blood Worms...
