It was as if a complete bestiary of Mutated Zombies was unfolding before his very eyes.
At that moment, his mind went blank, and his limbs turned ice-cold.
After all, the scene before him undoubtedly confirmed that the Zombie Detector was not malfunctioning.
He had just seen the number on the Zombie Detector soar past five hundred, and that was only because they had stopped advancing.
’If we keep going, how many more Mutated Zombies will we run into? Why are they all here? What are they trying to do?’
A series of terrifying questions flooded Lu Ping’s mind.
And just then, a monster he didn’t recognize appeared before him.
It was a two-meter-tall humanoid creature with a sharp horn on its forehead, a body covered in a thick, keratinous layer, and sharp spikes protruding from its elbows.
Lu Ping’s mind raced. He was certain that this type of Mutated Zombie didn’t exist in any of the databases he had memorized.
But he had a nagging feeling he had read a description of this kind of creature somewhere before.
Suddenly, a thought flashed through his mind, and the expression on his face instantly became one of terror.
He remembered: this was a creature unique to the Abyssal Plane, the Abyssal Corpse Ghost.
And its appearance meant that somewhere nearby... a new Abyssal Passage had formed.
In an instant, all the questions in his mind were answered. He finally understood why such a huge horde of Mutated Zombies had appeared here, but this understanding only brought him greater fear.
He didn’t understand why an Abyssal Passage would appear here in Changshi City. But he knew with absolute certainty that if he couldn’t get this news back to the Shelter immediately and send a distress call to the other major bases, the hundreds of thousands of people in the Changshi Shelter would be doomed.
If the Abyssal Passage was left unchecked, it wouldn’t just be Changshi City; the entire province might be devastated.
With that thought, Lu Ping cast aside all other concerns and immediately turned to retreat.
But just as he turned, his vision blurred, and a figure blocked the Mecha’s path.
This was a five-meter-tall, ape-like creature. However, it had no fur, its body instead covered by a thick, keratinous hide. Its arms were slightly bent, ending in fingers tipped with razor-sharp claws.
It stared silently at the Mecha, as if inspecting an interesting piece of prey.
Seeing this Mutated Zombie before him, Lu Ping’s pupils contracted slightly, his eyes filled with confusion and bewilderment.
He recognized this type of Mutated Zombie. It was a fairly common Hunter.
’But a typical Hunter isn’t much bigger than an Ordinary Zombie. How can this one be so enormous?’
The next moment, after feeling the terrifying aura emanating from it, Lu Ping instantly understood.
It was a Third Level Mutated Zombie, its power comparable to an expert of the Divine Demon Realm!
But his realization was useless. He had no time to react. He saw its palm twitch, and in the next instant, the entire Mecha was sliced in half at the waist. His own body was severed along with it.
Terror and despair filled his eyes, but they were overshadowed by a burning indignation.
Before his consciousness faded, Lu Ping used the brainwave transmitter to send two final commands to the Mecha.
A small port on the Mecha’s head opened, and a signal flare shot straight into the sky, exploding a hundred meters up into a piercing, bright red burst. This was the highest-level warning signal.
BOOM!
The next moment, the Mecha’s self-destruct sequence activated. The Energy Core detonated, setting off the rest of its munitions in a chain reaction. A furious conflagration instantly engulfed the Hunter.
However, a few seconds later, the Hunter walked out of the sea of fire as if nothing had happened. Its keratinous hide didn’t even have the slightest scratch on it.
Hunters might have the weakest Defense Power, but once one reached Tier Three, it was far beyond the power of a Blood and Qi Realm Martial Artist like Lu Ping, even with an ordinary Mecha, to harm.
Its figure flickered and vanished from the street as it raced toward its next prey.
Although Lu Ping couldn’t harm the Tier Three Hunter, the signal flare he had released at the last moment truly served its purpose.
Before leaving, he had arranged a system with the other members of the Mercenary Corps: different signal flares for different meanings.
The highest-level flare meant one thing: the Zombie Detector was not broken.
...
As wave after wave of Mutated Zombies spread out to eliminate any threats to the Abyssal Passage, the passage itself continued to expand.
The wider it grew, the faster it could transport troops. When the Abyssal Passage first opened, it could only allow a single Abyssal Creature to pass through at a time. Now, three or more could come through at once.
If one could pass through the Abyssal Passage to the Abyssal Plane, they would see a vast, orderly army ranked beneath a slate-gray sky.
Their numbers were at least a million strong. More terrifying still, an endless stream of Abyssal Creatures was marching toward them from the horizon.
It was a hair-raising number, vast enough to make anyone’s skin crawl. If this entire force were unleashed, it could likely conquer any major base with ease.
But the most eye-catching figure was at the very front of the Abyssal Creatures: a hundred-meter-tall Rock Giant. The stone of its body perpetually burned with Hellfire, ensuring no other creature dared venture within a hundred meters of it.
This was none other than the Magma Demon King, one of the one hundred and eight kings of the Abyssal Plane, and the one responsible for opening this Abyssal Passage.
However, at this moment, he was looking with some gravity at the small, delicate figure not far away.
"Charm King," the Magma Demon King’s voice boomed, shaking the very heavens and earth, "retract your Charm Ability. My mission is complete. Now, it’s your turn."
"Oh, Magma, always in such a rush," the Charm King said with a pitiable pout. "The Abyssal Passage has only just been opened; the surrounding Rules haven’t even stabilized! If I go now, I might suffer a backlash from the Heaven and Earth Rule. Would you really have the heart to see poor little me get hurt?"
"Move whenever you want. The Abyssal Passage is open. I have completed Lord Divine King’s mission," the Magma Demon King said, turning and striding into the distance.
"Such a heart of stone," the Charm King’s voice turned serious. "But don’t you forget, Lord Divine King’s orders were to prevent any humans from getting near for two hours after the Abyssal Passage opened."
"Rest assured. My clansmen will guard the Abyssal Passage personally. No humans will get near for the next two hours," the Magma Demon King’s voice echoed back, though he showed no sign of stopping. He was already several kilometers away.
The Charm King watched him depart without another word. She closed her eyes, and ethereal shadows began to split off from her body. They burrowed into the nearby Mutated Zombies, entering the Abyssal Passage along with them.
Her avatars were frail, but by hiding within the Mutated Zombies, they could temporarily deceive the Heaven and Earth Rule of the Earth Plane.
Each of her avatars could, at the cost of its own dissipation, activate her Charm Ability once to plant a Seed of Charm in a human’s heart. As the Seed of Charm took root and sprouted, she could gradually gain complete control over that human.
She had used this method before to plant numerous spies among humanity. The only drawback was that the Seeds of Charm were only effective on Martial Artists below the Divine Demon Realm.
However, if she successfully used it on a Body Shaping Realm Martial Artist, and that person later advanced to the Divine Demon Realm, the Seed of Charm would not disappear.
Over the years, through her careful cultivation, she had come to control three humans who had reached the Divine Demon Realm.
One of those controlled Divine Demon Realm powerhouses was located in Hua Country.
The Charm King had originally thought this was sufficient. But upon confirming the high probability of a Child of Destiny appearing in Hua Country, she had decisively shifted her focus there.
In fact, the opening of this Abyssal Passage was a deliberate act she had instigated, all for the sake of using this opportunity to sow a massive number of Seeds of Charm.
